The 5 acre Arboretum and Natural Water Garden

The two ponds and two streams are an attractive feature to this property in Wester Ross. The streams wind through the garden crossed by a number of small foot bridges. The Whitehouse's MOD (Military of Defense) history can be seen in a small weir further into the garden. The garden was originally planted as a small arboretum in the eighties and boasts 9 monkey puzzle trees we have our own quirky monkey puzzle totem pole! The streams and small weir are great for paddling and messing about in. In spring the wooded area is covered with native bluebells. Badgers have been known to reside here along with pine Martens and hedgehogs.

The great variety of trees means we have many native garden birds and migrant visitors. It has been known for local sea eagles to rest a while in the trees in our garden too. Deer also find their way in from time to time and our neighboring sheep!

About Leah and Kevin Ball

My husband and I have lived in the village of Poolewe since 2000. We love gardens and plants and enjoy being creative. The garden at the Whitehouse was a great attraction to us and we hope to develop its natural water features and arboretum for the enjoyment of visitors to the house.

Felt making is one of my loves and I now offer courses on felt making and can incorporate this into your stay if you wish. Some of my felt work is on display at the Whitehouse.

Leah and Kevin Ball purchased this house in 2012

Why Leah and Kevin Ball chose Scottish Highlands & Islands

The arboretum is really what we want to focus on making best use of the many natural water features and abundant wildlife.

Wester Ross although not our roots makes us feel very at home, The landscape of water, mountains and sky is a photographers paradise and a constant inspiration. Inverewe Garden is an iconic place right on our doorstep and never ceases to give us pleasure.

What makes this house unique

The Whitehouse once known as the Admiralty Pump House is an unusual building - built in the forties as a pumping station to provide water to the boats and ships moored in Loch Ewe durring World War two. It was never really used as WW11 ended. I was particularly taken with it's large open upstairs living space and wanted to bring it back into modern habitation and realise some of it's quirky potential. The house has an industrial feel to the outside which belies it's friendly comfortable space inside a happy contrast.

There are no close neighbors to the property but it is part of a small hamlet of historical interest you can see more information about Naast and it's past by checking our web site www.highlandwhitehouse.co.uk

Stunning setting in Wester Ross Scotland where the Mountains meet the Atlantic.
average rating of 4.0 based on 1 reviews

Location is very good for peace and quiet

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and slept very well, the property is spacious and the lounge ,dining area is great. I think with a little tree management the views could be opened up and this would make a great location even better.

Koch Ewe is very close and the Torridon giants too ,lop a few tops off trees and hey presto!

Internet or lack of takes a bit of getting used to and some more info about local places of interest, market days ,good restaurants ,where to buy sea food ,good bread etc could be useful, also in case of boiler breakdowns I think an electric shower and an immersion heater fitted to the hot water system would be a very good stand by .

Otherwise a great base for seeing the west coast at its best!

Owner's Response: Feed back is appreciated, it is lovely to know the house made for a great base. We are in the process of adding a back up heating system for those inevitable emergencies! The trees make the Whitehouse grounds a wildlife haven there is an abundance of birds and mammals which we are keen to encourage. Visitors say how much they enjoy exploring our small arboretum, natural ponds and streams they love catching glimpses of wild deer, pine marten and the many birds like buzzards and cuckoos to name a few...that frequent the garden. We do have a phased plan of tree thinning to increase views to the Sutherland mountain ranges they are stunning. Great comprehensive Local Tourist Information at the GALE Centre come highly recommended, GALE is a social enterprise employing friendly staff that are all too willing to help visitors get the most from their stay in Wester Ross with the added bonus that any profits made through their community shop and cafe are used to benefit the Gairloch and Loch Ewe community and ultimately the experience of our visitors.
