About The Owner

We are Alan and Karen Brunnen. We live 5 mins from Smithy Cottage with our 2 daughters, our Labradoodle, Westie, 2 cats and 3 chickens.

We have lived in Keig for nearly 10 years and love this area with its spectacular views.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2014

Why The Owner chose Alford

We bought Smithy Cottage in 2014. The previous owners had it for over 40 yrs and used it as an escape from city life. It had open fires for heat and candles for light. As tempting as it was to leave it this way we went ahead and installed electricity which gave the cottage lighting, heating and hot water for the first time in its circa 250 yr life. The cottage was the local Smithy for many many years, some of the stonework in the garden is the original workshop. Many generations of the same family are buried in Keig Churchyard.

We also installed a new shower room, a new kitchen with integrated appliances and new flooring throughout. A log burner was also installed and heaters in every room. After 11 months we were finally ready for guests in July 2015.

An excellent property

  • 5 of 5

Smithy cottage is delightful. Furnishings are comfortable and everything is provided to make your stay a home from home. Ordnance survey maps, guide books, adult and children's fiction, games, cards, TV, DVD , wifi, even a selection of herbs and spices in the kitchen cupboard. A lovely welcome pack too. Worth a 5 star score.

Very well appointed cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We had a very enjoyable week at this cottage. The furnishings are all very comfortable and of very good quality. An excellent kitchen - well equipped with everything from an induction hob and half sized dishwasher to a coffee percolator with fresh ground coffee. There’s even a washing machine, fridge and freezer. The bed is extremely comfortable with a duck down duvet and nice quality bed linen. I didn’t have a problem with the sloping height of the bedroom ceiling, as I am only 5ft 5, but my much taller husband bumped his head several times because the bedrooms are built in the eaves and the ceiling slopes a lot. It adds a lot of character but makes walking upright a bit of a challenge. This is cottage living, after all though. :)

The water pressure isn’t very high, understandable being so isolated, but nonetheless the shower was good, water hot and the cubicle size very generous. Each room has radiators that are easily adjustable and there’s a log burning stove in the living room with logs supplied.

I had worried about there being a dog smell because dogs are allowed but the hard floors and leather furniture are less pervious to take up smells so this wasn’t an issue.

The house is well supplied with games, books and a big tv if that’s of interest, although we didn’t watch it. We didn’t meet Karen, the owner, but were kept well informed by text of all we needed to know and were left a lovely welcome pack of bread, milk, butter, coffee and biscuits.

The gardens around the cottage are well maintained and on the one sunny day we had, we enjoyed sitting out in the garden at the chairs and table on a small patio.

There was a big parking area for at least 2 cars and some twisting steps up to the cottage itself.

The area is so quiet. Hardly any cars go past. When we sat out in the garden the loudest sound was the bees buzzing in the gorse in the field behind the house. We were in the area for a walking holiday and there were lots of very good walks in the area and two stone circles within easy walking distance of the cottage.

It’s about 25 minutes drive to Inverurie that has most of the large stores, including a good sized Morrison’s. There are smaller stores in Alford.

Overall this was a charming cottage in a lovely location and we were very comfortable there for our week. I would highly recommend it.
