About the property

4 bedrooms each with own bathroom, heated pool, in stunning rural setting

La Grange at Le Clos du Comte is a beautifully converted stone barn, originally dating from 1848, and is located in Mas de Cause, a hamlet about 2 km above the village of Daglan. Being high on the hills, it’s cooler in summer and warmer in winter than many of the villages in the valleys.

La Grange comprises a large living area, a big fully-fitted kitchen with dining area, 4 bedrooms, 3 en suite bathrooms, a separate shower room and a separate toilet. There are two bedrooms with double beds (one king size, one standard), and each has an en suite bathroom (shower, basin and toilet). The third bedroom has two single beds (which can be pushed together to make a 180 cm bed) and an en suite bathroom; the fourth bedroom has two single beds and use of a separate fourth shower and toilet. Each of the two largest bedrooms has plenty of room for a cot.

All the accommodation is on the ground floor. The kitchen/dining area, living room and the largest bedroom are all wheelchair accessible.

The building still has much of the character of the original barn. The door to the living area is in the huge archway built to take a horse and cart. There are two very attractive double stone lintels in the kitchen and one in a bedroom; these were, apparently, a rather ostentatious sign of the farm’s wealth at the time when the barn was built. The aim of the conversion was to keep these features while providing all the modern conveniences that you expect. We have tried our best to make our guests as comfortable as possible, right down to the crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and fluffy Egyptian cotton towels.

At the front, the barn looks out over a fragrant courtyard, filled with roses, lavender and jasmine. At the back there is a lovely terrace with a big sunblind when needed, with a view over a field and coppice towards a walnut grove.

There is a 12m x 5m heated pool (shared with one other 4-person gite), and underfloor heating in winter.

The estate of Le Clos du Comte is truly idyllic. It sits on 18 hectares (approximately 45 acres) of unspoiled, utterly tranquil forest and pasture. Almost the only sounds you’ll hear are birdsong, or the chirping of the crickets on a summer’s day. Almost the only light you’ll see at night will come from the moon or the stars. It’s a nature lover and stargazer’s paradise.

The property teems with wildlife year-round. In September and October, during and after rutting season, the red deer stags converge behind our house with their harems to battle it out and, when the fighting is over, to graze. Roe deer can be seen any time – and frequently make a nuisance of themselves in the garden! The wild boar are most visible on winter evenings, when they’ll emerge from the forest to eat any walnuts left over in the groves. Spring and summer are the time for birds. Last year, we had kestrels nesting in a niche next to our bedroom window, and the courtyard was selected as home by black redstarts, swifts, blue tits and sparrows. In summer, the hawks soar on the thermals, and we see or hear blackbirds, robins, cuckoos, hoopoes, owls, woodpeckers, finches, nuthatches, wrens …… I could go on. In spring and autumn, we’re right under the migration route of the cranes. And there are butterflies everywhere.

The local region is known for its wealth of history, and Le Clos du Comte has its own history, too. During renovation work, we have found fossilised figs and a boar tusk. The land has clearly been worked for millennia – we’ve also dug up a variety of prehistoric stone tools. The farmhouse, which dates from before the French Revolution, was originally a convent with its own chapel. At some point, the property became a farm, producing wine; it stayed that way for centuries, and our reception is in the original “chai” (winery). During World War II, the wine became the subject of dispute between the occupiers and the Resistance, the then-owners fled, and the forests were taken over by the Maquis. Nowadays, the land peacefully produces walnuts and hay.

Activities are too numerous to mention. You can start by exploring in the privacy of the estate. There are a couple of walking paths, but there’s nothing to stop you from wandering across the fields or into the forests. Locally, Daglan is a very pretty village, with a general store, a butcher/traiteur/chef who produces his own takeaway dishes, a bakery, and a variety of artisanal shops and activities. The village is becoming quite the artistic colony, with the recent addition of a sculptor. The church is worth a visit, and there is a market on Sunday mornings.

Within 25 km, there are the chateaux of Castelnaud, with its military museum, Beynac, La Roque Gageac, Milandes (once home to the American-born dancer and singer Josephine Baker), and Marqueyssac , with its hanging gardens of topiary. The village of Domme has wonderful views over the river Dordogne. The medieval town of Sarlat-la-Caneda has been beautifully restored, and much of it is pedestrian only. A bit further afield, there are the caves at Lascaux, and the town of Rocamadour, which clings to the cliffs overhanging the Dordogne.

If you’re feeling energetic, you can swim in the warm pool, or in our local river, the Céou, play tennis in the village, canoe, go horse riding or fishing, or play golf on one of several local courses. Hot air ballooning is a popular local activity, and we frequently see balloons floating over on calm evenings. If you’re feeling lazy, you can read a book in the peace and shade of one of the walnut groves.

We know that we are privileged to live in such a wonderful place, and we love to share its peace and beauty. Come and see for yourselves, and we hope you’ll agree that Le Clos du Comte is truly wonderful!

Luxury accommodation in a peaceful setting

We have just had an extremely memorable stay at ‘La Grange’ near Daglan with my husband and 10 year old twins. The setting is incredibly peaceful with plenty to see and do nearby. The beautiful towns of Domme and La Roque Gageac are a short drive away. The local village of Daglan is idyllic and has a great restaurant and bar and a ‘Huit à 8’ for provisions.

‘La Grange’ is a stunning ‘high end’ barn conversion with very spacious rooms, making it perfect for families, groups and/or extended families. Steve and Liz are very welcoming and ready to offer advice if required. The swimming pool area is a sun trap and comfortable loungers and plenty of parasols meant we could relax with a beer in the evening while the children swam. Although it was very hot when we were there, the constant temperature of the heated pool would have been a godsend had it been cooler. We were treated to a fascinating tour of the land, a visit to see the horses and we all enjoyed learning about the wealth of history discovered on the property (my children were even given some very special souvenirs to bring home with them - thank you Steve!)

To sum up we would thoroughly recommend this holiday rental and we will definitely be returning.

Relaxing stay at beautiful property with kind and friendly hosts

We had a fantastic break - the barn was elegant, of top quality, (eg beds, towels and linen - indeed all fittings- are of the highest quality, in top condition and spotless). The pool too was great, with perfect views and in spite of a mini hurricane before we arrived, absolutely spotless thanks to Steve’s quick and hard work. We loved having barbecues on the lovely shaded terrace and nothing was too much trouble for our hosts who really made us welcome and went out of their way to help us with short notice restaurent bookings, local advice, etc. The location was perfect for exploring the wonderful historical castles, towns and gardens around, as well as going canoeing and kayaking which we loved. We were a mixed group of generations and I can’t recommend this place highly enough as a base from which to be active - or just chill!

Beautifully restored barn

We were nine in this restored property about 2 km or so outside of the charming village of Daglan. The house is well equipped and comfortable. The three children loved the heated swimming pool after a day of sight-seeing in the Dordogne. Added bonus: the television receives British TV, giving them something to watch when they needed to rest after a busy day. Liz and Steve live on the property and are always around to help and give information.

The location was somewhat of a drawback in that it is at least a 15 to 20 minute drive to anywhere you might want to go and the roads are twisting with many blind corners. Daglan had two good restaurants - the Cantine and the Petit Paris. Both were incredibly accommodating to the requests of American children and the food was delicious.

It was a wonderful vacation.

Not as advertised and a very unpleasant experience with rude domineering owners

The sofas and chairs are hidden under white loose covers. Two bedrooms were made up but the remaining two left with bare mattress covers. Bathrooms are fully tiled and smart but also stark and bare. In the sitting area there are a few DVDs and books left by previous guests but nothing else. Not a bowl nor vase, not a single ornament, no cushions, not even a lamp so you sit under bright overhead lights. There are bedside lamps in the bedrooms otherwise nothing in those either. No welcome manual with property and local info. No toilet paper, toiletries, umbrellas, hair driers, pool towels, no courtesy items at all. We were issued with one towel and one bathmat each which were plonked on the kitchen worktop apart from a dirty one left in a bathroom. This was not the four bedroomed luxurious home from home we thought we had treated ourselves to. I politely requested sheets for the unmade beds and a full compliment of towels as one each is not enough anyway but also so that I could dress the bathrooms in an attempt to make the place feel lived in and remotely homely. This was met with resistance on the basis that it was too much work! When sheets were finally delivered the owner refused to make up the beds in a nasty tone and added an insulting comment as she left. We were allowed one more towel each for the 12 night stay.

We had paid the full September rate for a fully furnished and provisioned four bedroom, five bathroom home away from home. If we had wanted a smaller two bedroom basic property then we would have rented one.

Around the pool there is nothing but bare earth, weeds and rubble. There was a wheelbarrow left there throughout, old paint pots, a scrumpled old hose pipe and a rake. The route from the barn to the steps up to the pool is up a weed covered banking and slope. A public footpath runs 5m from the pool edge so walkers and bikers look in at you as they pass.

The owners house is parallel to the barn just a few strides away so there is no privacy through the large windows. The latter are doors so for ventilation in bedrooms you need to have doors open even through the night. There are ceiling fans but the blades were absolutely thick with dirt.

I have photographs to support all that I say.

When we booked our holiday the barn at Clos du Comte was the only one left of the size we wanted in the area. Now we know why.

It will never be a high end property but has potential if it were professionally managed with the owners at arms length

Owner's Response: To say that this home is “not as advertised” is simply dishonest. Apart from improvements, the home is exactly as described and shown in the photos. Anyone who reads this review in conjunction with the other 5-star reviews of this home will realise that it is based purely on malice, and has nothing to do with the home. Richard bitterly resented being informed (very politely) that, in general, public nudity is illegal in France and that he was risking a possible penalty of a year in prison and a EUR15,000 fine. We don’t make the law – we simply inform guests what it is. That, apparently, makes us “domineering”. Mark’s “well-behaved” dog turned out to be a very large and extremely badly-behaved Airedale over which the guests had very little control. They resented being asked (politely, again) to attempt to restrain it from jumping all over the kitchen cabinets and up the glass doors. We’re sorry if that makes us rude, but we also need to think of future guests. As for an insulting comment – none was made by us. The rest of the review tries to find fault where none exists. Yes, there are loose covers on the sofas and chairs – they can be taken off and washed as often as needed. Cleanliness is a priority for our guests and the covers were spotless when these guests arrived. Yes, there are few ornaments – the majority of our guests have children and don’t want to spend their holiday worrying about breakage or separating their possessions from decorative clutter when they leave. The bedrooms have rugs, cushions and pictures (see photos!). No, there were no linens in the unused bathrooms - we don’t provide linens for non-existent guests and most guests aren’t interested in “dressing” unused rooms. Of course there was toilet paper – it’s one of the items on our final pre-guest checklist. Of course there’s privacy – there are curtains at all the windows. Yes, we were in the middle of re-landscaping the pool area when these guests arrived – we explained, and stopped to give them peace. Yes, there’s a walking path which passes it, but there’s a privacy fence. And so on …... The reviewer states that the barn was the only property available – in late September, these guests could have taken their pick of hundreds of homes. They wanted clean linens daily, “toiletries, umbrellas, hair driers”, and “courtesy items”, i.e. they expected a 5-star hotel. They should have stayed in one.

Magnifique séjour!

Magnifique propriété, ancienne ferme refait à neuf avec des matériaux de grande qualités et luxueux, grand jardin a perte de vue, belle piscine chauffée et nos hôtes Elisizabeth et Steve ont réellement étaient adorables. Steve a pris beaucoup de temps pour nous a fait découvrir les trésors cachés de leur propriété pour le plus grand bonheur des enfants, bref ne pas hésiter à y aller les yeux fermés.

Wonderful barn in beautiful countryside

La Grange is a beautiful barn conversion just outside of a very picturesque historic village of Daglan. Our family, two adults and two children (ages one and four) stayed for a week at the start of July. It was a really lovely and relaxing holiday, not least because the barn had everything we needed (including super coffee machine, comfy beds, kitchenware, high chair, cot etc.), but generally it was equipped to an exacting standard. There are stunning views from every angle, and the heated pool was perfect after a day of sightseeing. Elizabeth and Steve were incredibly welcoming; they provided us with recommendations and even helped us book a lovely restaurant.

Daglan is a great little village – so pretty! It has a convenience store for items which we forgot at the main supermarket, nice restaurants, bakery, weekly market (on a Sunday) and café. It does have narrow streets, so if you have a larger than average car it might be worth parking on some of the outer streets.

Further afield there is Domme with its underground caves and Sarlat which are well worth a visit. There are in fact so many things to do/see there, that a week is not nearly enough. There are some amazing castles nearby which are a must – including Chateau de Beynac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. We also spent a lovely lunch and afternoon in La Roque Gageac, which is nothing less than stunning.

Great holiday and we would definitely recommend this to our friends.
