About this property

Holiday Let In Stunning Location, Great For Families And Outdoor Enthusiasts

Stoer Villa is a recently refurbished traditional home, that is spacious and cosy - ideal for families and large groups. A perfect base for outdoor activities, Stoer has stunning views of the sea and mountains, great fishing, and a beautiful sandy beaches.

Stoer Villa is a late 19th century stone house, with a modern kitchen extension and large front and back gardens. The interior has been completely refurbished, but in keeping with the style of building. Downstairs we have three main rooms (kitchen, dining room and living room) and two bathrooms. The kitchen is brand new and comfortably sits eight. The dinning room is an attractive space, with traditional furniture, and sits a further six. The living room has a wood-burning stove, comfortable sofas and a large flat-screen TV (smart-TV and satellite). Of the four upstairs bedrooms, one is en suite and one is set up as a kids' room. The bedroom above the kitchen has a double-bed, the kids' room has a bunk bed and the other two rooms have twin beds. The living room sofa also doubles as a bed for extra guests or those who find stairs difficult. All three bathrooms are equipped with modern showers.

Whether you are looking for relaxing family orientated activities or more adventurous outdoor pursuits, Stoer is the perfect base. There is a beautiful white sand beach less than 250 m from the front door, and two others within 3 miles. There are many easier coastal walks, with fantastic sea views across to the Minch to the Outer Hebrides. The quiet single lane roads around Stoer are excellent for cycling and provide spectacular mountain and sea views. Several tour operators offer boat tours out of Lochinver, pony trekking, and various other activities, such as Lama trekking. The area is popular for fishing. You can fish for Brown trout on any of the smaller lochs for free, and salmon fishing is available on Loch Assynt and the River Assynt. There is also excellent sea fishing. For the hard-core outdoor enthusiast, you can hike up Sulliven, one of Scotland's most remote summits, or any of the other hills to the north and south. The coast is superb for sea kayaking (kayaks can be rented locally), and the area is well known for rock climbing. Excellent longer cycling trips can be made along the coastal roads.

The house comfortably accommodates six adults and two children (or other similar arrangements), but could fit more at a squeeze. With assistance, a wheelchair guest could manage the ground floor and use the sofa-bed, but the house is not strictly wheelchair friendly. All bedrooms are fitted with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Pets are permitted, but smoking is not permitted in the house.

Getting Around
Although there are public buses, we recommend that to enjoy Stoer it is best to have independent transport, either bicycles or a car. We have ample free car parking space.

The nearest airport is Inverness. To get from the airport to Stoer, first take the A96 towards Inverness city, then turn north along the A9, over the Kessock Bridge. At the first roundabout after the bridge, take the A835 exit to Ullapool. From Ullapool continue to follow the A835 and then the A837 to Lochinver. About 1/4 mile before entering the village of Lochinver, there is a turning to the right (B896), which is sign-posted to Stoer. This is a single-track road with passing places. Continue along this road, following signs to Stoer, for 7 miles. Stoer is a small hamlet about 1 mile after the Clachtoll caravan site. Stoer Villa is the second house on the left and the parking is beyond the house, behind the old stone stables. From Inverness airport it takes approximately 2.5 hours by car to Stoer.

There are daily buses between Stoer and Ullapool, and from there to Inverness.

All fine for a family stay
Functional house to stay in, within close walking distance to the beach, which is great with young children. Everything worked in the property, though as of 2023 it is looking very tired. Note that the double room is separate to the other three, and the stairs to it are not suitable for young children.

A few minor issues
The main light in the bathroom at the bottom of the stairs did not work. The woodburning stove in the living room had no glass in the door, we did not light the fire as the temperature was sufficiently high for us to not need any heating on in the house, but this should probably be repaired for others. The window in the bedroom above the kitchen would not close and we did not want to force it. The hot tap not working in the bathroom off the kitchen was a bit annoying. We used a flan dish once and it developed a crack across the base but we did not mistreat it in any way. Apart from these items the house was really good and perfect for our short stay.

Friends on a swimming trip
House was warm and very clean with a really wel-equipped kitchen and cosy living room. Overall plenty of space for 4 of us to hang out and also to have our own bedroom. The whole process was very smooth. Our only quibble was that a few of the mattresses could use replacing. Other than that a lovely house in a gorgeous location

Currently I live in Lusaka, Zambia where I work for the World Agroforestry Centre's East & Southern Africa regional office. I am a tropical ecologist focusing on landscape restoration. I am married with two daughters aged 6 and 9.

I grew up near Ardgay about an hour from Lochiver and decided to buy Stoer Villa as a property in the UK to return to for holidays with my family.

Why they chose this property

The NW highlands of Scotland is a beautiful area. As a school boy I used to hike all over the highlands, but I keep coming back to this corner. Stoer is exceptionally well located, being secluded yet close enough to Lochinver for conveniences, and Stoer Villa itself is a lovely old cottage with a large garden. When we bought the house, it was quite run down but we have renovated it in keeping with the style and now its a lovely house.

What makes this property unique

Stoer Villa is really a lovely house and the location could not be better for family holidays. We offer a 10% discount to returning guests.
