Restaurant details: Restaurants ranging from Bar and Grill to Family Style to Fine Dining are as close as 2 miles to 10 miles.
The Cabin Property: The atmosphere is casual, fishing for Sunnies, Crapies, Northern and Bass.. Swimming is best in late June through mid August, unless you don't mind cool water.
Gatherings around the campfire in the evenings is a must. We provide the wood. (No wood from out of the area, please, to protect the forest from infections and pests causing infestations. (It's the law).
Sunsets are beautiful, stars are brilliant and the rays of the moon falling across the water is peaceful and serene. Fall to sleep with the call of the loons.
Get away from it all or take a short jaunt to town to mix it up with the locals and other area visitors. Lively entertainment available most weekends. It's YOUR CHOICE.
Fred's Grandfather purchased the property in 1935. Grandpa, Dad and 2 Uncles built the cabin in 1955-56 by hand with trees off the property. They cut, pealed and bleached the logs devoting many hours when not working their regular jobs so that we could enjoy the outdoors with shelter to return to in inclement weather.
We enjoy observing and interacting with nature. It is our place to get away-from-it all, not worry about getting all prim and proper unless we want to. Of course, we can get creative and find many things to do outdoors and attending local activities available in the communities around us too.
Our Grandchildren love coming to the cabin, exploring the woods, swimming, boating, fishing, wild berry picking in season, eating well, making up games, running around, building camp fires, making smores and listening to stories; some real some made up (if you can imagine that).
Ruth or Fred Strohmeier purchased this cabin in 1955
This is a unique experience. No hustle or bustle, good fishing and swimming, private location, limited noise of other people and their kids. Our goal is to provide a vacation experience with positive memories to take home.
Screen house among the trees to enjoy lake breezes without our famous mosquitos and direct sun. Great for lunches, reading books, and board games.
My husband and I spent an extended weekend here for our anniversary. The cabin is just what we wanted-cozy, comfortable, private, and beautifully situated on Lake Kego. The fall colors were amazing in early-mid October. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking your own meals, and Crosslake is about 15-minutes away with bars and dining.
Another wonderful visit to the Kego Cabin. Thanks again to Ruth & Fred for making the cabin and grounds perfect for our stay. We have stayed here many times and seem to enjoy each visit more than the last. Can anything beat grilling steaks on the Weber and watching the sun set on the west end of the lake? Peace & privacy is key at the cabin. Several of our grandchildren have experienced their 1st swim in a lake, boat ride, campfire, horseback ride, etc. Great golf, dining and the conveniences of home are just a few minutes away, if necessary. Ruth & Fred always make our stay the best- thank you! We are already looking forward to our next visit in May.
We have been trying to rent this cabin for at least two summers but our schedules always conflicted. We were so excited to finally spend a week there. Clean, cozy, beautiful lake and weather. We will be back.
...because I don't want to share Kego Lake with anyone else. Our stay, as always, was perfect. We have all the creature comforts we need and then some. We especially love the ambiance of the hand built cabin in 1955 (a year very special to my husband and me) This cabin is well-cared for and so completely tucked away from the noise and stress of other lakes, this adds to the specialness. Lastly, our dog is always welcomed by Fred and Ruth, Jacques and Skye, we just cannot imagine a vacation anywhere else. But we don't want the secret to get out.
We and the dogs, again, had the best time at Kego. As always, everything in and out of the cabin was clean and ready to use. We have become so used to Fred and Ruth's attention to detail, we must stop and acknowledge just how fortunate we are to have found their exceptional
cabin! Even inside, the lake is so close, we got a photo of a heron on the dock! During the same week, a deer was by the firepit, as we watched from the door. We feel so spoiled! As we arrive, we have charcoal to start dinner on the Weber grill, and split logs for a 'crackling' evening bonfire while on the wood swing (with dogs). I also think anyone would appreciate the spacious bathroom with tub, shower, washer and dryer. We love taking the pontoon boat for "a spin around the lake", with the dogs, hoping to see the loons. Fred always has a tank of gas hooked up so the pontoon is ready when we are. The boat, the quiet lake, the wooded privacy, the comfort of the log cabin, the wildlife, and the Owners, Fred and Ruth, are why we can't wait for our second week at Kego this fall!
This is our 7th stay over 4 years with another visit coming up next month. As always, the cabin is charming, spotless and the surroundings peaceful. We love that the cabin sits just 15 feet from the water on a very pine forested piece of private land. The closest neighbors are at least 1/ 4 mile away. The lake is not very populated which cuts down on boat and ski activities.
The owners, Fred and Ruth are very attentive to our every need yet give us our privacy as well. One of the big advantages to this cabin is they allow dogs, therefore our doodle Murphy gets to join us on vacation and he seems to enjoy every moment.
We pay to rent their pontoon which is worth it.
We highly recommend this property and look forward to our return trip.
