About this property

5 bedroom Provencal villa, heatable pool, air-con, secluded garden, 4 bath/5WC

We love spending time in our Villa. One can spend days at a time without going out & simply bathing in the pool, relaxing in the garden in the sun or the shade, reading from our huge supply of books & dining on the three terraces. It is so very relaxing. There is plenty of sightseeing within the mediaeval and18th century town and all accessible on foot. There are so many activities & sights around & about in the countryside. There are small family-run vineyards to be found all around the area where visitors are welcome to taste the wines. Evenings in town, eating out at the many street & square restaurants, is a wonderful way of enjoying the atmosphere. I hope that the reader can understand why we do so love this place.

Built in the typical 'bastide' style of Provence, this modern villa is situated in a quiet location on the slopes of a gentle hill on the outskirts of the beautiful mediaeval Duchy of Uzes, giving it lovely views. It is the owners' 2nd home.

The town lies close to the River Gardon and the famous 2000-year-old Pont du Gard. The area gives an authentic taste of the Midi, with its rolling hills and vineyards, its Roman remains and the hot sun.

The villa is a 12 - 15 minute walk to the town centre. It is light and spacious, being very comfortably furnished and equipped to a high standard.

The layout is unusual with the bedrooms and bathrooms in three separate areas in the villa, all leading to the central living room and kitchen/diner with its long covered terrace. A plan of the layout is to be found on the photo page.

The garden is about 1/3 of an acre (approximately 1450 square metres), mainly laid to lawn with masses of shrubs and many trees. The 60 sq m pool is at the centre of the main lawn and is 'L' shaped. The length is 11.5 metres & the width is 4.5 metres. It is 2 metres deep at the villa end and 1 metre deep at the shallow end. There is a 2.5 metres square beach area at the shallow end, which runs from 10 centimetres deep at the edge to 70 centimetres deep at the point where it takes a 30 cms step down into the main pool.

The pool is overlooked by a 19 sq m covered terrace with a long dining table and seating for 12 and gas & charcoal BBQs

Excellent villa with short walk to town
Really lovely villa with pool. We were 6 adults and we all thought the place perfect. Spacious, well equipped with a great pool. We also had the advantage of wall to wall sunshine for the week. A short 15minute walk to the town centre. Overall would highly recommend.

New Year ‘s in Uzés
We stayed at Elisabeth’s villa in Uzés for the last week of 2017 and loved every minute of it! The entire house was very comfortable even for our group of 9 adults! Spacious and clean, and conveniently located - close to many interesting sites, all of them very charming even in winter! The living room is very cozy (nice little fire place!) and the kitchen is large and has all the things you need to cook. The host was easy to communicate with and their is a great binder of recommendations. Wished we had booked a longer stay!

Delightful villa walking distance to Uzes
We have had the pleasure of staying twice at Elisabeth's delightful Villa. It is very well furnished and well kept with a spacious sitting room fully equipped kitchen and good sized bedrooms. Everything works with lots of fridges/ freezers and is spotlessly clean on arrival. The house has morning and evening terraces, the latter going onto the garden and the swimming pool. The pool is a good size and set in a delightful garden which is very private despite the proximity of other houses. On our second visit the house was full to capacity but did not feel crowded (we were 10 adults and 2 young children). The friendly house manager lives just over the road and is only too willing to sort out any problems. A particular advantage of the villa is that it is only about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Uzes which is delightful and has an abundant supply of shops, restaurants, cafes etc. The centre is a pedestrianised medieval city with squares that host popular markets twice a week. There are two big supermarkets on the outskirts. The old adage that you won't want to leave once you are here applies and with everything on the doorstep you don't have to but Avignon, Nimes and the Pont du Gard are all nearby. Overall a lovely villa with an excellent pool with everything you need close to hand and which we highly recommend.

Relaxing holiday in lovely villa
This villa was exactly as advertised, spacious, welcoming and well maintained. There was plenty of room for our extended family group (five adults, two four-year-olds). The wonderful pool and effective air-con were particularly welcome as temperatures reached 35c most days. Uzes is an attractive town, and the centre is about 15 mins walk from the villa (fine, except during the hottest parts of the day). Although the one-way, often busy ring road presented some initial challenges, we orientated ourselves after a couple of days and enjoyed the excellent market, shops and many restaurants and cafes; other tourist attractions include a castle, cathedral, medieval garden and the Haribo museum. Slightly further afield, we also enjoyed visits to Lussan, Castillon-du-Gard and the Pont du Gard. We didn't travel far on this visit, but hope to return and explore the wider area once our children are a bit older. Thank you Elisabeth for letting us stay in your beautiful house. (It was particularly nice having a piano to play!)

Beautiful house, Fabulous pool, Delightful town
Our large family group of 8 Adults, and 3 young children have had a marvellous 2 weeks here, with plenty of space, particularly outside where there are 3 separate sitting areas as well as loungers around the pool, surrounded by a beautiful private garden. I must mention that the saltwater pool is the best we have experienced in 4 successive villa holidays in France, and the beach entrance removed the fear of the younger children as they could gently work their way into the pool. This was also a very big advantage to my adult daughter who is a wheelchair user and unable to stand or walk - she could also slowly work her way in. We were a bit concerned about how Ruth would be able to cope, but the bedroom downstairs was fine and benefitted from having a wet room shower. We were lucky enough to be in Uzes on Bastille Day, and the firework display, viewed from the upstairs bedroom was truly amazing. I must take this opportunity to thank Claude, who is always ready to help and is a really amiable chap and every inch a true Frenchman. A big thank you from all of us. Uzes itself is lively and vibrant, with lots of narrow interesting streets, and many wonderful shops and cafes. Unanimously agreed by all of us as our favourite French town to date beating Cognac and Carcassonne (in our opinion). During our stay we never saw rain, and the sun shone all day every day. On my last day at 7am I sat by the pool and watched 2 hot air balloons slowly make their way over our villa, and the only sound was the intermittent noise of heated air being pumped in. What a lasting memory, and what a great holiday.

About the host

Hosted by Elisabeth Sleeman

Host profile image
We are an English couple who found themselves by chance in the Place aux Herbes in the centre of Uzes in November 2001, fell for the place as so many others have done and were determined to buy a home there. We live in London and Uzes gives us a home in a world that's a million miles from how we live in England.

Why they chose this property

We first saw the property in May 2002 when it was a shell of a house sitting on a third of an acre of rubble. We were completely entranced by the way the villa stood at an angle to the rest of the other villas in the locality, perched on its little mound as if it was having a conversation with the Duke's 11th century castle on the opposite hill. The villa gave us lots of rooms for family and guests, with scope to extend it (as we later did) and a garden area that needed to be planted from scratch. The garden lies all round the villa and within only a few years it had grown from waste land to offer a variety of lawns, flowers, shrubs and trees with the pool in the centre of the back garden. The garden gave us an opportunity to create our own unique outdoor space.

What makes this property unique

Guests love this villa, as do we, for the space it offers, the large pool with its 'beach' area, the varied garden and the seclusion. Yet it is only a 10 to 12 minute walk from the centre of Uzes. This provides a huge benefit, as it means that one can walk into town of an evening to enjoy the many restaurants & no car is needed, teenagers can safely walk into town and back and their parents don't need to drive to collect them and, if one walks in the opposite direction to the town, the fields of the open countryside are only 5 to 6 minutes' walk away. We have planned the villa and the gardens so that all can have peaceful holidays there, swimming, playing games, enjoying the sun or reading quietly in shady corners without having to leave the premises at all. Of course there are so many diversions and places of interest to see in and around Uzes, that there is no shortage of interesting things to do if one would like to leave the villa.
