About Kathleen and Mike Kessell
Eight years ago we returned to the Portreath area where my husband grew up as we felt we had to bring our children home and give them the chance to grow up in such a wonderful place. We discovered the cottage we now live in, in Tolskithy Valley and fell in love with it. Its perfect for the children (and us!)to enjoy the outdoors from, we have a workshop here where we make stained glass. Some nights tea goes in the oven, then we take a walk on the beach and come back when its cooked. The valley is sheltered so we often enjoy eating outdoors. It is on these days that we think just how lucky we are to live here. We can't imagine living anywhere else.
Kathleen and Mike Kessell purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why Kathleen and Mike Kessell chose Carn Brea
When the opportunity came to purchase the cottage next door it seemed the perfect opportunity to enjoy rennovating it to the highest standard and then making it available to holiday makers. Being next door means we are able to take care of the cottage and ensure everything is as it should be, giving it a personal touch. In this way we would love to give people the chance to enjoy our beautiful part of the world.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage is full of original and characteristic features and has a real homely feel to it. For example there is a wood burning stove, beamed and vaulted ceilings and stained glass. Visitors can enjoy the experience of living in a cottage with its enclosed garden whilst having all modern conveniences . We have endeavored to maintain its original character and charm and have really enjoyed bringing the cottage back to life whilst carrying out renovations over the last year. There is an enclosed cottage garden with a patio and bbq. Also a public footpath from the front door going up the valley and beyond. For this reason it makes it ideal for families, couples or dog lovers and so we allow dogs by arrangement (we just respectfully ask they are not left at the property unattended). However, we still ensure the cottage is presented to the highest standard for all holidaymakers. By car there is easy access to the A30 which is the main trunk road to discover so much of Cornwall from and also by car very quick access to local amenities, beaches and woodland. It really is the perfect location to enjoy a Cornish holiday from!

Lovely traditional cottage with a modern twist
We had a lovely week in this cottage - small but perfectly formed! Everything I could want I found in the kitchen, including a cool box and ice block for picnics! Easy to find and very clean and comfortable. plenty of places to visit locally and recommend the pub in Illogan at the top of the hill - extremely friendly and welcoming. We particularly like this part of Cornwall and weren't disappointed. Cornwall was extremely busy (thanks, I suspect, to Mr Ross Poldark) but we did find a few places that were quiet. Because of the good road links from this cottage, it meant we could explore the south coast as well as the Lizard and down towards Lands End and up to Tintagel. A very enjoyable stay!
Thank you for your lovely review. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Pixie Cottage and here in Cornwall. Your review echos the comments by many people who stay here. We look forward to seeing you again. Kathleen and Mike.
could do better
garden a bit unkempt and not really enclosed enough. owner asked to be advised in advance if we were going to have any visitors. property very compact. access was down very tight lane needing reversing onto a busy fast road. very dangerous at times.
Thank you for your review. We just wanted to clarify a few things. We never asked about visitors in advance and are always happy for our holiday guests to have visitors. We were pleased you had your family to visit during your holiday.
This traditional Cornish cottage is in a lane as advertised and this is one of the reasons many of our guests choose to stay here. However it is not tight access as far as the covered car parking and many guests choose to reverse in so they can drive out forwards onto the 30mph road.
The cottage garden is enclosed by walls and fences making it dog and child friendly. We wish you and your family all the best in the future.
Very dark and dreary
It was definitely not pet friendly as advertised. We did not feel comfortable having to make sure our dog did not do his business in their garden as instructed only to come out into the lane I was not prepared to do this when it was dark. The only pub near was not dog friendly either. We certainly would not be returning to this cottage.ever again.
We are sorry to read your review. We can only assume you were sadly affected by your long, hot drive down, then no sleep as your dog was taken seriously ill in the night, resulting in a hurried trip home again. We were very worried for you and your dog Mylo and hope he is alright now.
We realise this gave you no chance to actually enjoy where you were. We do however wish to address your points which surprised us. You are the first people in 3 years of running this cottage as a dog friendly holiday home to make such comments. Firstly there is no requirement for your dog to go to the toilet in the lane. There is an enclosed courtyard and enclosed garden with outdoor lights. All we ask is that you pick up the dog poo with a doggy bag to keep the garden nice for other visitors (the lane is only suggested as an option). Secondly there are many dog friendly pubs nearby within a five minute driving radius - starting with Trickys round the corner and the Robartes Arms and New Inn at Illogan. If you put "dog friendly pubs near Redruth" into google this list will come up. Finally we're sorry you felt it was dark and dreary as our holiday guests normally love our beautifully rennovated traditional Cornish Cottage, in an almost private lane, enjoying the sun on the garden and in the windows at various times.
We have put a list of dog friendly pubs in the information pack so no one makes this mistake again. In the information pack there is also a map of dog friendly beaches and information about the many dog friendly walks nearby.
We loved every minute
Nice little cottage, beauty everywhere you go...would love to come back. Thank you
Thank you Katja,
We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Pixie Cottage and loved the area as much as we do. We look forward to seeing you again.
Kind regards, Kathleen and Mike.
A warm welcome on a dismal day. Arrived to find milk, tea, coffee, biscuits and flowers. Thank you
Pixie Cottage is a lovely little cottage, clean, well equipped and welcoming. It has everything you need for a stay in Cornwall. It is also really well located for going out and about with the A30 being near by while being isolated enough to provide a restful, rural retreat. We personally enjoyed spending time at Portreath and Porthtowan beaches both only a short drive away as well as going further afield. If you are not sure where to visit Kathleen has provided a very useful folder full of information about the local area and places to visit in Cornwall.
Kathleen and Mike are warm, welcoming people and available if needed, as they live next door, but are in no way intrusive giving you the freedom to enjoy your holiday.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was a pleasure to meet you both and we're so pleased you enjoyed your holiday,
Kathleen and Mike.
What a great place to stay
What a wonderful cottage, cosy and inviting and a great location too. It feels secluded yet it is so close to shops and places to eat, also you have the beach minutes away and a great coast walk along the cliffs. Its also a prime location for visiting anywhere in Cornwall, we managed to get to lots of wonderful coastal towns with no effort at all, just a short car ride and you have got the best views and walks anywhere in the country.
If we are going to take another holiday in Cornwall then Pixie cottage is the place we'll be staying, thank you Mike and Kathleen for making our week a really enjoyable one.
Regards, Sue & Ian and Reece the dog
