About Kathleen and Mike Kessell

Eight years ago we returned to the Portreath area where my husband grew up as we felt we had to bring our children home and give them the chance to grow up in such a wonderful place. We discovered the cottage we now live in, in Tolskithy Valley and fell in love with it. Its perfect for the children (and us!)to enjoy the outdoors from, we have a workshop here where we make stained glass. Some nights tea goes in the oven, then we take a walk on the beach and come back when its cooked. The valley is sheltered so we often enjoy eating outdoors. It is on these days that we think just how lucky we are to live here. We can't imagine living anywhere else.

Kathleen and Mike Kessell purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Kathleen and Mike Kessell chose Carn Brea

When the opportunity came to purchase the cottage next door it seemed the perfect opportunity to enjoy rennovating it to the highest standard and then making it available to holiday makers. Being next door means we are able to take care of the cottage and ensure everything is as it should be, giving it a personal touch. In this way we would love to give people the chance to enjoy our beautiful part of the world.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is full of original and characteristic features and has a real homely feel to it. For example there is a wood burning stove, beamed and vaulted ceilings and stained glass. Visitors can enjoy the experience of living in a cottage with its enclosed garden whilst having all modern conveniences . We have endeavored to maintain its original character and charm and have really enjoyed bringing the cottage back to life whilst carrying out renovations over the last year. There is an enclosed cottage garden with a patio and bbq. Also a public footpath from the front door going up the valley and beyond. For this reason it makes it ideal for families, couples or dog lovers and so we allow dogs by arrangement (we just respectfully ask they are not left at the property unattended). However, we still ensure the cottage is presented to the highest standard for all holidaymakers. By car there is easy access to the A30 which is the main trunk road to discover so much of Cornwall from and also by car very quick access to local amenities, beaches and woodland. It really is the perfect location to enjoy a Cornish holiday from!

A warm welcome on a dismal day. Arrived to find milk, tea, coffee, biscuits and flowers. Thank you

Pixie Cottage is a lovely little cottage, clean, well equipped and welcoming. It has everything you need for a stay in Cornwall. It is also really well located for going out and about with the A30 being near by while being isolated enough to provide a restful, rural retreat. We personally enjoyed spending time at Portreath and Porthtowan beaches both only a short drive away as well as going further afield. If you are not sure where to visit Kathleen has provided a very useful folder full of information about the local area and places to visit in Cornwall.

Kathleen and Mike are warm, welcoming people and available if needed, as they live next door, but are in no way intrusive giving you the freedom to enjoy your holiday.

What a great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful cottage, cosy and inviting and a great location too. It feels secluded yet it is so close to shops and places to eat, also you have the beach minutes away and a great coast walk along the cliffs. Its also a prime location for visiting anywhere in Cornwall, we managed to get to lots of wonderful coastal towns with no effort at all, just a short car ride and you have got the best views and walks anywhere in the country.

If we are going to take another holiday in Cornwall then Pixie cottage is the place we'll be staying, thank you Mike and Kathleen for making our week a really enjoyable one.

Regards, Sue & Ian and Reece the dog

Great little cottage and lovely location especailly for dog owners.

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay in the cottage, its small, but cosy and although not what you would call 'plush' its clean and well furnished and we really enjoyed our stay here, it was very relaxed. at £75 per night, we found it extremely good value for money too, we would definitely stay here again if ever in the area.

Very cosy cottage with enough space and facilities for two people. Easy access to coast path and surrounding beaches. Nearby road was surprisingly busy. Overall enjoyed our stay.

A lovely cottage set in a good location - the whole county is within easy reach

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage which is clean and well equipped. Whilst the owners live in the cottage next door, do not let that put you off - they are very friendly but also keep their distance so you don't feel under scrutiny - you wouldn't know they are there. The location is ideal - you feel you are in the country but are so close to the A30 and the whole county is within easy reach, whichever direction you want to go, and lovely beaches are exceptionally close. The cottage is ideal for dogs and has a woodland walk right outside the door. Was nice to sit in the garden on the patio and just relax. Would definitely recommend staying here.
