Our house is fifty meters from the lovely river Lot. On the river banks there are two summer restaurants. There are many activites on the river, rowing, skiing, jetski and of course, fishing!
The gite has it's own entrance and comprises the whole first floor of the house. It has a large living space with a kitchen, dining area and sitting room. On the landing there is a small WIFI lounge which leads into a comfortable bedroom (bed is 1,60m x 2,00m) with its own en suite bathroom. The bathroom has a large shower, bidet, basin and toilet. A heated towel rail ensures dry towels every day! The kitchen is well equipped with a gas hob, electric oven, microwave and dishwasher. The living room has English television. Downstairs, we share a private courtyard, a pretty, convivial place to BBQ and relax.
Cajarc is a village with all amenities, shops restaurants (14)! doctors, etc. There is a large public swimming pool (no "baggies" bathers) and tennis courts. It has an interesting medieval history and a Pompidou modern art centre. The local tourist office can supply English brochures. There are many events that take place in Cajarc, brocantes, fairs, markets, ski competitions, fishing competitions and many more! It's a fun village for old and young alike. It is on the GR65 Pilgrim route and there are many lovely scenic walks in the hills around the village.
Cajarc is central to visiting Figeac, St Cirq Lapopie, Chateau Ceneviere, Pech Merle caves, Marcilhac sur Cele and the georgeous Cele valley. The Cahors wine route is an hour away.
We are potters and our studio is just down the road on the way to the river. Our shop is open throughout the season and Gavin can often be seen at his wheel, being creative.
Gavin and Lillian hail from South Africa. We moved to France in 1993. Michael was born here in 1994. Since then we lived in the Rocamadour area of the Lot, ran a bed and breakfast and some gites and the pottery for twelve years before moving to Cajarc. In Cajarc, we have our pottery studio and bed and breakfast/gite. Gavin gives pottery courses, and has a shop right next door to the studio. I look after a few elderly people as well as running the house and helping in the shop.
Gavin and Lillian Bell purchased this apartment in 2008
This house has an olde world charm about it. We loved the stone staircase and stone floors. It lends itself to our business. It is in a peaceful area of Cajarc and very close to the river. Our pottery studio is just across the road, perfect all round!
The location of the house is perfect in that we can take our dog for a walk along the river in the early mornings, hear the birdlife and enjoy the peace. It is very central from all the shops and restaurants. We do every chore by foot or by bicycle.
The Potters house is in a quiet street... With Lillian and Gavin warm and welcoming hosts. The facilities were great... Including a wood burning stove, that we enjoyed in the evenings whilst watching a DVD and dipping into the fascinating collection of books!
Cajarc is pretty, is on the Camino ( GR65) and has some fabulous opportunities For walking.
A special place to relax and enjoy!
My partner and I recently had the most wonderful stay at in Cajarc. Cajarc is a stunningly beautiful country town situated in one of the most exquisite regions (Lot) in France. It is the perfectly sized town for those who want to get a feel of a medieval town without any traffic congestion and urban sprawl. It really is a dream to visit and navigate! A few minutes’ walk from the town centre, in a quiet side street, is the gite belonging to renowned potter, Gavin Bell and his amazing wife, Lillian. The house itself is gorgeous – a huge old stone and timber building. Gavin and Lillian have converted the upper floor into a beautiful, enormous gite. The whole upper floor, in fact, is yours. There is an open-plan kitchen and living area, study area with wifi and a beautiful double bedroom and bathroom. The rooms are spacious, sunny and charmingly decorated with original drawings, paintings, pottery and quirky touches here and there. It has everything you need and want. And if it doesn’t, you just need to ask the hosts. Gavin and Lillian’s affable, relaxed and “nothing-is-too-much-trouble” attitude is like a breath of fresh air. You can’t help but feeling welcome, at-ease and at home. Gavin and Lillian have a little studio across the road from the house and a delightful little shop chock-a-block full of desirable little must-haves. Gavin also offers pottery lessons, although we did not take advantage of this perk! They serve a wonderful breakfast in a stunning little courtyard off the kitchen. We were loathed to leave the table and the atmospheric little space. But when we did, we could take a short stroll down to the river which is gorgeous. It has a beautiful tree-lined promenade and tranquil walks along the bank. We found Cajarc to be the ideal spot to go exploring the area too, which is really divine. We were there in summer and could not get enough of the surrounding countryside with valleys and cliffs and beautiful villages. I cannot recommend this little gem of a gite and Cajarc highly enough! Do whatever it takes to get there.
We are very close to the Peche Merle caves with their exquisite pre-historic cave paintings. The lovely abbey at Marcilhac sur Cele is a must on any trip to this area. Figeac with it's unique Champolion history and museum, proudly presents the Rosetta stone as Jean-Fransçois Champolion who was born in Figeac deciphered the hieroglphics on the stone.
There are many many more things to see around here, - chateaux, architecure, museums, out door live museums, restaurants and great outdoor living.
