Random Scoots is located in Keene, NY, in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks region. We have offered guided hikes in the region since 2004, and are now offering two cabins for vacation rental - Random Scoots Cabin and Mercy Cabin (see VRBO listing 370114). Whether you are looking for convenient access to the multitude of activities and attractions available in the region or simply want a quiet place to relax and get away from it all, Random Scoots will serve your needs.

The Cabin:

Random Scoots Cabin (really a small home!) is over 900 square feet, including the main room (kitchen, dining nook, and living room), 3 bedrooms and 1 full bathroom. The third bedroom can alternatively be used as a large storage room set up to hold plenty of gear.

The bathroom is finished with v-groove pine walls and ceiling, while the remainder of the cabin features 12' wide pine boards on both walls and ceilings, resulting in a warm and charming interior atmosphere very much in keeping with the wooded setting.

The Property:

Our location, 1/2 mile off Rte 73 on a private road, is accessible yet remarkably quiet. Situated on a wooded property, the grounds around the cabin transition from a well kept lawn to open woods with maintained native ground cover to a managed woodlot, resulting in an open and inviting atmosphere. The location features spectacular views across the valley to Hurricane Mountain and surrounding peaks, with glimpses of Giant and Dix Mountains. Sound effects are provided by the gentle murmur of the Ausable River East Branch in the valley below.

The Region:

The centerpiece of the region is the Adirondack High Peaks, where hundreds of miles of foot trails provide access to the rugged beauty of the mountain interior. Outdoor activities in the region include hiking, snowshoeing, back-country and cross-country skiing, mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, trail running, wildlife viewing, flat water and whitewater paddling, hunting, fishing... the list goes on and on, limited only by your imagination. For those with less ambitious goals, or on rest days, Lake Placid and the surrounding region offer a multitude of relaxing and interesting attractions and activities. A sampling -

- Lake Placid: Home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games

- Tupper Lake: The Wild Center (Regional Natural History Museum)

- Blue Mountain Lake: Adirondack Museum (Regional Human/Cultural History Museum)

- Whiteface Mountain: The Olympic mountain is a short 15 mile drive.

Our Philosophy:

It is no wonder that generations of outdoor enthusiasts have been drawn to the rugged beauty of the Adirondack Region. Visionary legislation that established the Adirondack Park in 1892 initiated a tradition of conservation aimed at ensuring that this critical natural resource be preserved. It is incumbent on today's users of the resource to carry on that tradition. We at Random Scoots believe that by responsibly enjoying our public lands today we can ensure that the same opportunities will be available for future generations.

We further believe that development of the intimate and respectful relationship with nature that is so important to our future begins in childhood, and we strive to create a family friendly atmosphere, a comfortable and enjoyable retreat where parents can nurture this relationship in their children. In keeping with that goal our rate structure is designed to encourage couples and families. As a further benefit Random Scoots guide service offers reduced guiding rates to families.

Additional information, including guiding rates and an online PHOTO ALBUM, is available upon inquiry.

Random Scoots and Cascade (16Feb09):

Random Scooter's cabin and Cascade Mt. all in one weekend. Does it get any better than that. I took my wife up to Keene to stay for the weekend at Random Scoots and we thought we would hit a peak on Saturday. It was her first trip to the Adirondacks and my second. The day was wonderfully sunny and temps in the low 20's. We started from the parking area at 8AM and reached the summit around 10:30. The trail was well packed and we wore snowshoes up to the summit rocks. The summit was amazing! My wife having never been on a windy summit before felt pretty vulnerable but was very excited. We descended back to the car with an arrival time of 12pm.

If you have never stayed at the Random Scoots cabin, you're missing out. It was very warm and cozy with EVERYTHING one might need or want.

Clean, comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed at Random Scoots so we could do some hiking in the High Peaks and couldn't have been happier with our stay. The cabin is impeccably maintained and very comfortable. It's secluded, but very close to Rt 73, so it's an easy trip to the major trailheads, Keene, Keene Valley and Lake Placid. It was a great base camp for us and I can highly recommend it to any hikers who are planning a stay in the High Peaks region. Thank you, Tom and Doreen!

Outstanding Vacation Location

  • 5 of 5

My family rolled the dice on Random Scoots and won.

If you are looking for somewhere that provides tranquility, comfort and beauty while still having accessibility this is it. The cottage is well designed, meticulously maintained and cozy for the whole family. The clean well maintained yard under the tall pine provides an awesome setting to just sit and relax, or have a game of croquet. The enchanting hamlet of Keene with its great cafes and eclectic shops is walking distance. The local swimming hole, with both small sand beach and rock to jump from into the Ausable is also a short stroll below the cabin. All other outdoor pursuits from the best hikes, waterfalls and rock climbs within the High Peaks are a very short drive. Tom and Doreen were outstanding hosts remaining accessible and available while respecting and not infringing upon our privacy in any way. Great people, exceptional environment and amazing experience. My family strongly recommends this location and would like to say a personal thanks to Tom and Doreen.

Hit the jackpot

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I stayed here a couple of years ago before the porch was covered. We couldn't believe our luck in finding this property! We are all serious hikers and it was a great luxury to arrive "home" to a beautiful cabin and especially the great kitchen. The price is very reasonable and the view is fantastic. The rooms are spacious and even the little sleeping loft above the kitchen area is fun (that's where I stayed, and a child would adore it.) Can't wait to return.

Highly Recommend This Place

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the pleasure of renting Random Scoots for two nights and would recommend it to anyone looking for good value in a beautiful location. They do a great job maintaining the cabin and surrounding property, and keep it stocked with everything you'll need for a long weekend or extended stay in the region (including maps, magazines, and guide books of the region, typical kitchen and cutlery offerings, and even stuff for laundry). The cabin is spacious, and the living room/kitchen is a multi-functional space with a great cabin ambience. The views from the fire pit outside are absolutely fabulous, and the cabin, despite being in a beautiful rural location, is just up the hill from the ADK Cafe, a Stewarts, and a great boutique market/wine store. Tom, the owner, is super responsive, friendly, accommodating, and easy to deal with. Can't say enough good things about this place...

A great cabin and guide

  • 5 of 5

Tom who owns the Random Scoots cabin does a superior job making guest welcome and comfortable. The cabin is cozy and spacious. Best of all Tom is an accomplished guide whose credentials and knowledge of the mountains is amazing. He guided my wife and me over the Dix Range climbing Macomb, South Dix, Grace, Dix and Hough. We did this over 2 day long hikes from Elk Lake and back. We are slow hikers but with Tom's patience and encouragement we got it done. And what a pleasure to arrive back at the cabin, have a relaxed dinner and a great nights sleep. The cabin is right in Keene so the cafe and bakery are close by and very good. Highly recommended.
