Thank you so much for an amazing stay. The cottage is immaculate. I think we both fell in love with Montana - amazing scenery, abundant wildlife (right in the yard-love it!) and great people. I am sure we will be back!

Sweet Cottage in the Woods

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is beautifully appointed, very clean and charming. Nestled among trees, it was a pleasure to watch the deer every day come within feet of us as they grazed. The location is good, close to Bigfork, and the owners are extremely helpful and responsive. It's a great place for a calming, relaxing holiday away from it all. The downside is that it is NOT "waterfront," as listed. There is a path that leads to the river, and the descent to the actual waterfront is too treacherous for two old ladies like ourselves (in our late 60s) to risk. (A broken hip was not part of our plan!) A simple handrail would have made all the difference. Too, there was no place to actually hang out even if we had made it down there. We'd envisioned 4 days sitting on the deck or dock, reading books and catching up (we are two sisters who live 3000 miles apart), jumping in for a swim whenever we felt like it, and watching the water flow by. We'd both come a long way to actualize this vision, but alas, it was not what this lovely cottage provided. We were disappointed that the listing did not make it clearer that this is more a "cabin in the woods" experience. Nonetheless, we had a wonderful time (Glacier, Flathead Lake, Whitefish, Bigfork's Summer Playhouse, amazing cherries, sighting of a baby bear cub, etc.) We enjoyed the cottage and the surroundings very much. If being right on the water with easy access to the river is not that important to you, you could not do better than this place.

Owner's Response: Your comments are appreciated. However, I am sorry to hear the Cottage did not fulfill your perception of a "waterfront” property. Swan River Cottage is defined as "waterfront" by property tax records, by realtors, by Google Earth, and by our guests. This stunning, 10+ mile long, deep-water section of the Swan River is used daily for boating, kayaking, swimming, etc., and is accessible only from private, waterfront properties. Our path to the river is not steep by most standards (see VRBO photos 2 & 3), but could be construed as such by a handicapped person. Thus, Swan River Cottage is not (and never has been), represented as “Handicapped-Accessible.” Had you disclosed your handicapped status when reserving the Cottage, your disappointment could have been avoided.

My favorite place

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Swan River Cottage in July and again in September. I love this beautiful place that is like a second home. The owner Cathy is wonderful to deal with and very helpful in every aspect. The cottage is beautiful and wonderfully decorated. My favorite place is to sit on the porch in the morning and evenings. I have stayed at the Cottage six times and will be back again this summer.

The property was very clean and well organized. there were plenty of deer, even in the area right off the front deck in the morning as we had coffee. The river was beautiful access was easy even for an old goat like me. our only regret was not having enough time to do and see everything.

Back for the second time in two months~

  • 5 of 5

I love staying at the cottage. I was here in July and came back because I loved it so much. Everything is clean, comfortable and well kept. I raved about the cottage before and will continue to do so. The owners are so wonderful. One of my favorite things to do it to sit on the porch and enjoy my coffee and watch the deer. The setting is beautiful and serene. I hope to be back in October.

Thank you for having me!
