About the property

Once a typical fisherman's house, situated in the best location possible

Located right beside the marina / main restaurant area, Casa Clare offers four people comfortable, convenient home-from-home accommodation with its two bedrooms, traditional barbeque, large patio and roof terrace offering stunning views over the marina as far as Lagos.

With a Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild winters, summer temperatures are high, but moderated by the sea breeze. It is said that the Algarve has one of the best all year climates in Europe.

Alvor, in the Western Algarve is testament to that! It is perfectly located, close to the sea and countryside it is the optimal destination for those seeking a versatile holiday. Alvor is a 50 minute drive from Faro airport.

Village life is pleasant, you can wander to the market hall or bakery in the morning and buy your fresh fruit, fish and bread and spend your afternoons relaxing on the beach. For the more energetic there’s golf, horseback riding, water sports and a wide selection of excursions (land and sea, all available within 100 metres of Casa Clare).

Steps immediately outside Casa Clare on Rua dos Pescadores lead down to the main restaurant area / marina. Alvor boasts 115 restaurants and Casa Clare is almost equidistant from the (current) top 4 on Trip Advisor.

Our fully equipped kitchen will make home cooking a pleasure and should the weather warrant it, the dining suite in the living room provides for comfortable eating indoors

This room also boasts two large Italian sofas with matching foot stools. The entertainment unit housing a 50” smart TV with Netflix and Chromecast, books and games and a stand-alone wood burning stove creates a cosy homely feel on the rare cool day or chilly night. Of course there is air-conditioning! There is wifi throughout the house and terraced areas.

But who wants to be indoors? Eating out at home is such a joy…….the aromatic scent of fresh herbs, coupled with the sizzling sound of fresh fish or meat on the charcoal is mouth-watering at any time of day!

Breakfast outside on the patio is extra special with cheerful birdsong and the faint sounds of the fishermen returning with their late night or early morning catch!

There’s no need for a clock here, the local church bells ring in the hours and lively antics and calls of the seagulls announce mealtimes!

Sundowners on the rooftop to the sound of the wind blowing through the rigging and halyards of sail boats in the marina, the fading light “through dark clouds a red rose peeping and an amber gleam*” eases the day into the night. (*Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet)

The master bedroom to the rear of the property is en-suite (shower & toilet); it has air-conditioning, an electric fan and satellite TV. There is ample storage in the wardrobe, two bedside lockers and vanity unit.

The second bedroom to the front of the house also has twin beds, a large wardrobe, bedside lockers, vanity unit and under window storage

There is an electric fan and a Windows 10 PC for guest use and a separate guest shower and toilet. All beds are made up with luxurious Egyptian cotton linen and white fluffy guest towels are also provided

Both shower rooms have extractor systems and heated towel rails. Both bedrooms have hair dryers and hot & cold fans.

There is a large safety deposit box (can hold 2 laptops) in the living room

Suitability: Casa Clare is best suited for responsible adults due to the tiled and graded floors, multiple steps and a high terrace. It may not be suitable for the very elderly or infirm. It is not wheelchair friendly.

Smoking is not permitted in the house and pets are not allowed.

Casa Clare is on a pedestrian only street. There is free on-street parking in Alvor (30 to 100 metres from the property).

About Zoe Giltrap MacCourt

Researching the retirement market in the Algarve

Zoe Giltrap MacCourt purchased this house in 2014

Why Zoe Giltrap MacCourt chose Portimao region

Casa Clare is situated in what we believe is the best location in Alvor. Its close to superb restaurants and the marina, close (but not too close) to the pubs and night-life. The garden and roof terrace are a delight, a private haven so conveniently located

What makes this house unique

Casa Clare is on a pedestrian only street and away from the usual tourist accommodation but (a very short) walking distance from all the essential facilities including a superb range of restaurants. The neighbours are for the most part Portuguese, and are very welcoming.

Fabulous house in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

Casa Clare is a bit of a hidden jewel. From the outside it looks like a very small, modernised fisherman's cottage but inside it is a roomy and beautifully appointed house with a lovely garden and rooftop terrace. Spotless and with every modern convenience it is the best appointed holiday-home we've ever visited. Situated on a secluded pedestrian street and yet is within a minute of the main thoroughfares in Alvor. We never had a problem finding parking within a a minute or two of the house for our rental. Casa Clare is close also to the harbour and within minutes of the beautiful boardwalk and beaches. The beaches in Alvor are fantastic, well served with supervised sunbeds and restaurants. Big enough to ensure a little privacy you can pitch up pretty much where you choose. Exploring a little will bring you to secluded, almost hidden, areas of beach.

Straying a little outside of the town of Alvor will equally bring rewards, Lagos, Sites and Sarges are all well within reach if you have a car and each has it's own rewards. Highlights of our trip were the sailing trip to Lagos and also the Sea Kayaking in Lagos and, of course the beaches. We were also happy to spend the day in Casa Clare bathing in the sunshine and venturing out only for food! We are a family including teenagers and Casa Clare was a fantastic base for our holiday. A must-visit is the slightly rustic - with amazing clifftop views - restaurant, Luar da Foia which is a culinary adventure - its a winding, narrow road journey to make it to the restaurant but well worth the effort.

Super Location, Super Apartment, Super Town

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of four, and it was a first visit to Portugal for our two friends. We could not have hoped for a better experience in Alvor in this lovely apartment. Zoe and Gervase could not have been more helpful or efficient in answering questions and providing guidance when making the initial booking. Finding the apartment was easy, with free parking close by on the sea front. We have stayed in many similar types of accommodation in the Algarve, but this was one of the very best in terms of what the owners generously provide to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The garden and terrace were lovely to sit out (even in February) and, although the apartment is only one street back from a busy area full of restaurants, it was really quiet at night, aside from the occasional cat and the chickens next door! We loved Alvor for it's charm and friendliness, with restaurants and bars to suit all tastes. We shall most certainly return and we recomend Casa Clare withouth hestitation.

Casa Clare - A super break

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was extremely well equipped with everything you could think of and more besides. As mentioned in previous reviews the sun terraces and garden areas are excellent for sun bathing, eating out doors or simply relaxing. There is an outdoor barbecue which we found really useful and enjoyed a few home cooked meals on a couple of occasions.

The house was extremely clean and well maintained. Beds were comfortable and the wifi excellent. The location is also super, 30 seconds walk to the main bars and restaurants but not impacted upon by any noise from them. The beach is approx 10 minute walk and well worth the effort.

Recommendations- The Green Door restaurant 4 doors down for its beautiful food and excellent service, the local food market in the square for fresh fruit , vegetables and fish and The Parlour Bar for music nightly.

I have to commend the owners Zoe and Gervase for their excellent customer service and prompt replies also Neil and Helen for the efficient meet and greet.

I would not hesitate to recommend Casa Clare and look forward to returning in the future.

A really well presented 2 bed former fisherman's cottage in the heart of Alvor

  • 5 of 5

The property was as stated on the website and on the documents supplied by the owners. It was immaculate and had all the amenities you could wish for. The cottage is situated close to the main area for bars and restaurants but noise was not a problem. The garden and terrace were great outside spaces to sunbathe and eat.Our meet and greet and key handover was prompt and friendly. Overall our experience was excellent. We hope to stay there again and would recommend Casa Clare to friends and relatives.

very comfortable and complete house !

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely holiday in Alvor. The village is very nice and not as crowdy as f.e. Albufeira or Lagos. The boardwalk and the estuary walk are so beautiful.

Casa Clare is nicely situated: in a few minutes you are in the middle of nature or in the hustle and bustle of the restaurants and shops. And within a 10 minutes walk you are on the most beautiful beach.

The house is very comfortable and complete. There is nothing that we have missed. Comfortable, cosy, wonderfull beds, nice bathrooms, more than fully equiped kitchen and lovely garden and roof terrace.

So we will be back for sure!

Brilliant Little Gem

  • 5 of 5

A few friends and I have been going to Albuferia for about 10yrs and decided on somewhere different this year, Alvor. After a lot of research ( us ladies are fussy, two bathrooms and all single beds) I saw this Fishermans cottage and fell in love just with the pictures. We arrived on the 1st June as planned and were met by Neil who showed us around and how things worked. The house exceeded our expectations, it had every mod con you could need and more from modern fully stocked kitchen to sun hats and cosy blankets for wrapping up in at night to watch the stars. The bathrooms ( whole house really) were spotless and the wi-fi very handy. The garden was a private sun trap with comfortable garden furniture and the upstairs terrace a treat. The house is approx 50 metres from the nearest restaurants and the harbour where with a glass of wine you can watch the world go by. The boardwalk is a 10 min stroll and great for morning runs with the beach beside it. A credit to the owners who seem to have put that greater bit more effort into the place to make it an enjoyable stay. I haven't a bad word to say about it and am looking to come back !!

Watching the sunset at the Yacht Club bar / cafe at the Marina is really worth while. Spectacular photo opportunities abound. Alternatively view it from the steps outside Kate's 'Sunset Bar' with a cocktail in hand.

The Alvor board walk and main beach are famous. Its also worth travelling to the Tres Irmaos beach at the eastern end of Alvor Beach for wonderful swimming.

To try something different, there's a beautiful walk inland starting at the marina following the course of the Alvor River upstream, with flamingos, spoonbills and storks usually viewable upstream of the dam (circa 1.5km from Casa Clare). Good walking shoes are required as the terrain is hilly after you leave the paved walkway and climb up hill beyond the wooden fisherman's huts on stilts.

Remember to bring a bottle of water or else a full picnic if you want to sit down, relax and enjoy the view. There are wild fig and almond trees on this walk as well as seasonal wild flowers.

To extend the estuary walk a little further, cross to the other side of the dam and follow the river even further upstream to the main road as far as the Penina Hotel, stop for lunch or a drink and then ask the hotel reception to order a taxi back to Alvor (total walk circa 5km).

The indoor market at the top of the town has a superb array of fruit, vegetables and fresh fish (the latter only in the morning).

Leinster House Irish bar is worth a visit in the evenings with Aaron Whooley on guitar usually from 10pm. There are many other bars ranging from small quiet cafe type catering mainly for locals to livelier bars all across town, depending on your taste.

A sailing boat day trip to Lagos departing from the Alvor marina is memorable.

There are so many wonderful restaurants in Alvor that its hard to know where to start. Some of our favourites are Arco de Velha for turbot, A Lota for all types of prawns, A Ribeira for red snapper, Salsa Bistro for lamb chops. These are all within 80 metres of Casa Clare. There are many many more to choose from.
