You can enjoy a stay in one of the major historic olive estates in Pollensa, nestled on the hillside of the Vall de March area just outside Pollensa Old Town. The estate includes an original Moorish tower built in the 13th century, was once owned by the wealthy Templars, and has been featured in Traveler Magazine, The Telegraph, The Observer, and many other publications.
The estate has sweeping views over the Val d’en March and enjoys an uninterrupted view of Puig Tomir and the Tramuntana mountain range, which was recently designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. From the Atalaya, which sits above the main house, the entire sweep of the Tramuntana range as well as the Mediterranean Sea is visible.
The vistas are complimented by the estate’s own great stone walls and terraced hills of olive and carob trees. Oak forests dot the landscape. Around the house are beautiful grounds and gardens. Two large lawns are bordered by roses, lantana, margaritas, plumbago, and other colorful flowers as well as lavender, sage, and rosemary.
Being well above sea level and close to the sea, the estate has a gentle breeze that keeps the area cooler than the valley below, even the warmest summer day. In the winter, the southern orientation of the house and gardens maximizes the sun’s warmth. Summers are spent in the cool of the courtyards, eating, reading, and playing board games. The patios and front cobbled terrace provide ample room for larger get-togethers.
The main house is surrounded by majestic oaks and sweeping terraces of olive trees. During the morning and evening, white doves fly through the air in acrobatic feats. At night, hoot owls can be heard calling to one another nearby. But the best sound of all is the sound of sheep bells tinkling, reminding us how truly peaceful this place is.
The house is approximately 1300 square meters and is built around two interior courtyards that flow seamlessly with the interior. These large patios are complemented by comfortable rooms, quiet nooks and the house’s historic features such as the olive press and Moorish tower.
Owners Liz Barratt-Brown and Bos Dewey have recently renovated a great deal of the house and grounds. All the renovations were done meticulously with an eye to retaining the house’s charm but to including all the modern conveniences. Behind the house are extensive gardens that lead to a large orchard and green garden.
The estate also has two other houses – the Atalaya and Son Duri.
A short distance down the road from Pedruxella’s main house is a separate house, Son Duri. It has spectacular views and wonderful solitude. This is a hikers paradise, with lovely walks along well maintained estate roads.
The house was completely renovated in 2010. The large family room, which contains the kitchen, dining and living areas, is bright and warm with views out to the mountains. A front patio runs the length of the family room.
There are three bedrooms, one conveniently located on the ground floor with a full bathroom ensuite. The master bedroom with its French doors opening to a balcony, a bedroom with bunk beds, and a back patio are upstairs.
The house and land around it provides a magical setting above the Vall d’en March amidst ancient olive and carob groves.
The Atalaya – meaning lookout in Arabic – was constructed in the 1980s and 90s as a conservation center. Designed to host seminars and research on conservation issues, it resembles a large hunting lodge of days past, complete with a 3 meter fireplace.
This sanctuary for writers, musicians, artists or for anyone seeking truly to get away from it all is surrounded by birds and with a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean sea, mountains and valley below.
The Atalaya’s ‘Great Hall’ spans thirty by seventy feet. It also has a kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms, a stone patio that runs the length of the hall, and a breakfast patio on the east side off the main bedroom.
