About Clelia Cardano sheppard

I am a Plein Air artist, married to John for 37 years, we have 4 grown children. John and I met in Italy were we married and when leaving my country he promised me we would one day have an Italian style house on the water! He kept his promise and designed the house!

Clelia Cardano sheppard purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Clelia Cardano sheppard chose Cape Charles

We were looking for a quiet place to do art, bring up our children ( homeschooled them) and be close to family and work. After having lived in Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Virginia Beach we finally put our roots down on the Eastern Shore which blew us away for the beauty and peace.

What makes this cottage unique

The most stunning aspect of the Cottage is the view. It is located high up on a bluff so guests feel as if they are on a ship. The cottage is surrounded by park -like grounds that include seasoned plants and flowers , a waterfall over a Koi-fish pond and quiet shaded spots in a secret garden atmosphere. Our guests enjoy swimming boating and beach combing at stone's throw away.

A quiet and restful stay

  • 5 of 5

This was just what my husband and I wanted (and needed) for our week long vacation. Small but very comfortable and beautifully furnished. Rural setting was perfect for our morning walks; very close to Kiptopeke and Eastern Virginia Shore Nature Reserves. Nice private beach - sandy beach made wading and swimming very easy.

Other plus: beautiful gardens outside the cottage.

This cottage is perfect for two people and a romantic getaway. Also excellent for anyone interested in nature, bird watching, and exploring the villages off Hwy 13.

Relaxation - No Kids!!!

  • 5 of 5

We could not have found a better place to stay to relax! We left our 3 boys at home and sat by the water for 3 full days. Clelia was kind enough to set up a fire pit for us and we burned 2 bundles of wood every night under the stars. The private beach had the softest sand and dozens of horseshoe crabs. Cell phone service is VERY spotty and the wi-fi didn't work for us - which was perfect because we really did need to disconnect from the world. Food Lion was right up the street and provided everything we needed. We only went into Cape Charles one morning for breakfast and to see the town. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review! I love it when our guests find that serenity and peace after they stay at our cottage on the Bay. We certainly feel the same way, living in this paradise! The WIFI has been temperamental in the last month and we are looking to improve on that although part of the charm is getting away from it all. We are working on fixing the problem nevertheless . We hope you come back as that is the ultimate compliment. Thank you

Cottage was charming, romantic and comfortable. Perfect getaway!

The gardens and view of the bay was beautiful! Private beach access was added bonus. Great location with an easy 8-10 minute drive to Cape Charles, and closer to Kiptopeke park. Would definitely stay there again!

Lovely garden, spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay.

  • 4 of 5

The guest house is very small. This is definitely a place to get outside and take advantage of the breeze off the bay. We were there during "fruit fly season".... Waitresses even joked about the "extra protein"...

Owner's Response: As always very appreciative of feedback from our guests . We are flattered that we get so many excellent reviews. Our cottage is meant to be cozy with all the amenities needed for comfort . We pride ourselves in always welcoming our guests with a chilled bottle of wine and snacks. The cottage is booked year round most weekends so it is very popular. The fall is accompanied by fruit flies in our rural area but it doesn't seem affect tourism!

Perfect time for two!

Everyone we told and shared (pictures) of your little "Italian cottage" was envious!

We also enjoyed our time around Cape Charles and look forward to another get away soon.

Secluded cottage with outstanding views and beach.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is adjacent to a large Italianate home with exquisite and well maintained gardens and grounds. It is cozy, but has all the comforts: an adjustable queen sized bed, a fully functional kitchen and eating area, a stand-up shower in the bathroom and a washer/dryer. There's a TV and the owner has supplied many books and games for guests to utilize. The main attraction is the private patio which can be accessed through the sliding doors, with its gas grill, and which leads to the gardens on the bluff with your own viewing perch under the trees. The view is astounding, all the way from the bay bridge in a sweeping arc that offers you a vista of the lower bay with the ocean-going boats at anchor, the crab-fishing boats tending their cages just off the coast, and the occasional luxury yacht slipping by. You can access a private beach area through fairly steep stairs that may be a challenge for those with reduced mobility, but the beach itself allows for sunbathing, swimming or just exploring the little pools and nooks among the breakwater rocks. The Cottage's location is within a short drive to the restaurants and stores of Cape Charles, and would be a good base for exploration further up the peninsula.
