Maison Xanthe is a pretty, very spacious house on the edge of a quiet picturesque rural hill-top village in an area that has become increasingly popular with those seeking something a little less spoilt than Provence. The Languedoc Rousillon region of France offers the historical, cultural, gastronomic and lots of fun - Cathar castles, the walled city of Carcassonne, the enchanting medieval market town of Mirepoix with it's bustling Monday morning market and Michellin-starred Relais restaurant, wine school with Masters of Wine at reknowned winery and restaurant Domaine Gayda as well as all that the Pyrenees has to offer - cave paintings, Go Ape climbing adventures, rafting, kayaking, and walking.
Simply but comfortably furnished in a plain neutral rustic French style the layout of Maison Xanthe ideally lends itself to 2 families sharing.
The front door leads into a hall with kitchen with dining and sitting areas with a woodburner and with stairs to a first floor with 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms. On the floor above this is a very large attic room with 4 beds and plenty of space, an ideal childrens bedroom / den.
The ground floor leads on beyond the kitchen into a huge tiled sitting room with exposed brickwork, French windows opening onto a rarely used village lane and made safe with wrought iron balcony frame / gate.
A door from this sitting room leads into a second hall with French windows and bathroom and laundry room and from which rises a second staircase to a large light and open plan kitchen dining area with French windows opening onto a large terrace with fantastic views across vineyards and sunflower fields to the Pyrenees. There are 2 bedrooms (1 twin and 1 double with an additional day bed) and a shower room in this part of the house.
The 25m private heated pool is situated in the former orchard, which is across a rarely used village lane and is entirely secluded.g something a little less spoilt than Provence.
Bellegarde du Razes is very sleepy - perfect for an early evening walk around the ramparts with a glass of rose but not lively. The nearest shop is in Belveze which is 5 minutes away by car. Belveze has lots of local shops ie bakery, bank, bar, chemist, mini-supermarket and pizzeria/restaurant in neighbouring village 5 minutes drive away. Excellent restaurants and supermarkets 12-20 minutes drive away and wine appreciation and viniculture courses at the Gayda restaurant/vineyard 12 minutes drive.
NB: The swimming pool is in the old orchard across a small rarely used village lane. It is fenced within the orchard and the orchard is fenced with a gate to the lane. It is French law that children are supervised in the pool area by an adult. Please ensure an adult crosses the lane with children at all times. We do not find this a problem as tend to decamp to the pool for the day in groups.
