Description of the region :

The Catalan Pyrenees in North of Spain Constitute a formidable mountain range. Far below peaks of stark magnificence wind beautiful valleys, and the lower ranges and plains offer up all manner of natural wonders. The range's verity is remarkable. While the north western corner, especially the Val d`Aran, is astonishingly green and could easily be mistaken for Alpine scenes in Austria, the vistas become distinctly barren and forbidding further west. Water seems to burble forth across the range as if from nowhere; even after rainless summer, mountain streams and brooks maintain their animated passage. It is no wonder that The Catalan Pyrenees (Pirineos Catalanes) are given 3 stars by Guide Michelin (Highly recommended) as the natural beauty is stunning. Discover authentic towns and villages with an ancient past behind them (Puigcerdá, Solsona, Berga, Olost, etc.) The area also offer delicious regional cuisine and provide countless opportunities for leisure and sporting activities: skiing, hunting, fishing, mountain climbing and adventure sport such as white-water rafting.

If you have time to sample only one area of the the Cataln Pyrenees,

make the

Parc Nacional d `Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici

, an area of jewel-like lakes and dramatic peeks. Walks will take you through a stunning varity of landscapes, from dense forest to bare, snow-covered mountain ridges, past glacial lakes and up to some fine peaks of almost 3000 m. Other walks offer rushing streams, dramatic waterfalls and grassy plains.

You might also want to explore the volcanic zone

Parc Natural de la zona volcânica de la Carrotxa. The park surrounds the

village Olot on all sides, but the most interesting area is between Olot, and the village of Santa Pau, 10 km. southeast. There are about 30 volcanic cones in the park, stretching up to 160m high and 1, 5 km. wide. You can undertake many pleasant walks among the long-extinct volcanoes of this park. Choose between strolls of a few hours and longer walks. As communication between the villages used to be extremely difficult as the mountains are deeply cut across by side valleys, the regions (arán, Ribagorca, Pallars, Alt Urgell, Cerdany, Ripollés Garrotxa ans Empordán) have developed separately, from each other, acquiring their own individuality, personality and traditions. This applies more particular to local art, especially during the Romanesque period.
