Just steps away from the centre of the lovely traditional vilage of Chaumeil, this ancient house is your cosy home from home for the holidays. Our house has thick stone walls and a huge granite fireplace. It is featured in the prestigious Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay guide and you can find a review on their website. It is one of very few Sawday's-approved houses in this lovely area. Doubtless you will want to look?
The village of Chaumeil is in the heart of the beautiful Monedieres mountain range with wonderful views and lovely walks straight from your door. A short walk away is a pretty swimming lake. There is a bar that has changed little since 1550 which serves food all day long in July and August. You can also eat well in the family-run village auberge.
Inside the house abounds with ancient charm; stone walls and floors and antique furniture. The salon has a magnificent stone fireplace with a large wood burning stove if the evenings turn chilly. (Please note there is a small additional charge for wood - 25 euros maximum per week.) Sofas and chairs are comfortable and there is a small antique table for games or tea for two. Original oil paintings and watercolours sit alongside old prints on the thick granite walls.
There is a traditional majolica woodburning cooker in the French farmhouse kitchen/dining room and also an integrated electric over and a gas hob for convenience or for big family meals. There is a dishwasher, coffee maker, good quality crockery and utensils aplenty. The large oak table invites friendly family dinners. Although thick walls keep everything cool in hot weather, sunshine fills the kitchen from the south-facing garden all afternoon.
Dating from 1640, the house retains many original features. It was for once the village school and the stone steps are well worn by the patter of children's feet. Up the medieval staircase you find four light and airy bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom with overbath shower, toilet and antique washstand with a marble basin. Travertine marble tiles surround the bath and it is finished in oak panelling. There is also a separate, newly refurbished, shower room with toilet on the landing.
Each of the front facing rooms has lovely views over to the church, the traditional ancient Marie and the old houses that make up this small and ancient village. The front bedrooms have a double beds. Those behind have twin beds; one has metre wide beds and enjoys lovely view of the mountains. The second twin is accessed through one of the double rooms. The en-suite bathroom makes this perfect for bathing and putting to bed little ones and it is furnished with a mid-century style twin bedroom suite. All bed linen is high quality cotton, duvets are light in summer and warm in winter and quality towels are plentiful.
Outside there is a private garden surrounding the house on three sides with our barn making up the fourth side and ensuring your privacy. There is a gravelled drive to the front and a marble table set up on a terrace. There are sun loungers and a deck chair that you can use on the terrace or take out on to the lawn.
The large barn at the back is part of the property giving total privacy. From the terrace and garden there are views across the village and up into the Monediere mountains. A tranquil setting to enjoy summer meals or drinks with the scent of roses nestling against the old stone walls. The house takes it's name from the spring that appears just over the garden wall - a torrent in winter, though often completely absent in summer.
