Hummingbird House, an elegant, modern ocean view villa in Bottom Bay, Barbados

Bedrooms 3
Separate WCs1
Space 1,000 sq ft
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 4 - 14 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, sleeps 6

Hummingbird House is a new villa with ocean views and a private swimming pool just a two-minute walk from Bottom Bay Beach - an out-of-the-way 150 meter strip of breathtaking white sand and coconut trees sandwiched between two sea cliffs. It is arguably the most beautiful beach in Barbados.

Our villa features 3 air-conditioned bedrooms and a nicely equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances. The living room has comfy lounge seating for six with a widescreen LCD HDTV and the master bedroom features an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. The spacious covered back patio is exposed to a refreshing sea breeze and overlooks a private pool with beautiful ocean views.

Bottom Bay is on the southeast coast of Barbados in the parish of St Philip, with most of the island within a 30 minute drive. Much of the sea coast in St. Philip is made up of a series of ragged, scenic coastal cliffs that are punctuated occasionally by idyllic white-sand beaches such as Bottom Bay.

The Bottom Bay Region: Bottom Bay is on the southeast coast of Barbados in the parish of St Philip, a scenic out-of-the-way area in eastern Barbados. As Barbados is only about 21 miles long (North-to-South) by 14 miles wide (East-to-West), nothing on the island is too far away, and most places are within an easy 30-minute drive. Much of the sea coast in St. Philip is made up of a series of scenic, ragged coastal cliffs that are punctuated occasionally by idyllic white-sand beaches such as Bottom Bay (which is in our opinion the most spectacular of these - although we're admittedly a bit biased).

While most of the big hotels and resorts on the island are situated along the west coast, the quieter southeast coast and the east coast offer the breathtaking views and rugged natural scenery that make Barbados an island paradise. In addition to the picturesque Bottom Bay Beach, the world-famous Crane Beach and Sam Lords Castle beachfront are within 10 minutes drive. If you're looking for fine dining nearby, the Crane Resort has two acclaimed restaurants, and the busier south and west coasts are 20-30 minutes drive away. We highly recommend the inexpensive, low-key nightly 'Fish-Fry' at Oistins (on the south coast in Christ Church), home of the Island's biggest fish market.

Getting Around: Bridgetown's harbor and shopping are a 25-30 minute drive away (if you avoid rush hour traffic), and renowned golf courses at the Barbados Golf Club and Sandy Lane Resort (where Tiger Woods was married) are just 15 & 30 minutes away, respectively.

We highly recommend renting a car for getting around the island, but regular buses are also available and taxis can be called as alternatives. Many car rental companies will drop off and pick up cars to our villa, making the experience fairly painless.

Hummingbird House, Private Paradise In Barbados

  • 5 of 5

Our wonderful experience started with Jan and John, the couple that manage the property. They had asked for our flight information and were expecting us when we showed up in the driveway. Jan and John made sure that we knew everything about the property, the area and gave us great tips on what to see and do during our stay. Their welcome was the prelude to the warm and friendly hospitality that is prevalent on this island.

The property is very well maintained. Even though there is an indoor dining area, we ate, sat and gathered exclusively at the outdoor dining room table in the covered area by the pool. The kitchen was well stocked and we especially enjoyed the fridge that spit out plenty of crushed ice that made a great base for our ``Hummingbird Rum Punch``. Although there is air conditioning, after the first couple of nights, we acclimatized and just let the ocean breeze that blew through the open windows cool us down.

Stepping outside through the double French doors each morning, we were greeted by the sunrise, a magnificent view of the ocean breaking over the offshore reef in the distance and the sounds of the surf.

We often heard comments from the locals that Bottom Bay was the best beach on the island; and we can attest to that. The cove is picturesque; the sand is beautiful, the water clear blue and the beach extremely clean. The ocean is a little rougher on the south eastern coast but our group enjoyed playing in the surf.

A rental car is a must. While it took a little getting used to driving on the “wrong side” of the road, the drivers are very courteous and make allowances for tourists. You will get lost! But who cares, the island is small and even a series of wrong turns won’t get you too far off track.

So much to do – not enough time. Don’t miss: Oistins Friday night party, the BBQ fish fry near the villa at the Church, St. Lawrence Gap (night life and restaurants). Drive the island. We especially enjoyed our coastal trip around the entire island. The view from the northern cliffs around Cluffs Bay is breathtaking and stopping off at Round House on the east coast for Coconut pie rounded out the day as the sun set on the surfers riding the waves below. Our favorite restaurants were L’Azure at the Crane (it was our anniversary), Pisces in the St Lawrence Gap, Round House and hanging out on Cutters’ patio.

We had a great time and look forward to returning to Hummingbird House.

Home from home!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hummingbird Villa. It was like having our own home in Barbados.

It was just a stones' throw away from where my father is living, so it worked very well for us.

The atmosphere was a very tranquil one, my favourite time was after our evening meals just sitting around and enjoying the cool sea breeze.

We would either get the local bus or taxi to visit the surrounding areas. Oistins was a favourite!

Enjoyable and unforgettable. Our host Jan and John were very helpful and kind.

It was great!

Perfect & Peaceful Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

First of all, Jan was amazing! She sat with us when we first arrived, and answered every question we had, and offered lots of useful advice! She was always a phone call away if we needed anything. We loved this place!! We found Hummingbird Villa to be just like the photos depicted it, although the photo of the view out to the ocean does not do it justice!! It was serene and peaceful, with the trade winds constantly blowing the palm trees. We spent every evening swinging in the hammock, listening to the sound of the crashing waves on beautiful Bottom Bay (just a short walk away) and talking about our adventures of the day. We were pleasently surprised by the lack of bugs buzzing around! There are a couple of cows that are in the pasture behind the house, that we found endearing. We even had a green monkey visit on the last day! The villa is quite remote from the touristy areas (which we loved!), but just know that you really need to rent a car to get the most of the island. The kitchen has all the amenities you need (our only suggestion is to get a new set of knives and a new blender). Water pressure in showers was amazing!! The beds were a little hard, but nothing that kept us up at night. We never turned the tv on, so I'm not sure about that. Wifi was perfect, and there was a laptop and printer (to print out boarding passes). We loved having the pool for afternoon swims and lounging by. There are boogie boards, and beach chairs (which worked in a pinch, but they were a little rickety and could be updated), and we were told there was snorkel gear, but all of the masks were broken and unusable (not a big deal!). All in all, we LOVED Hummingbird Villa!!!!

Amazing holiday at hummingbird House! Would definitely stay again! Just a few small improvements....

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time the last two weeks at hummingbird house! So sad to have left! The villa felt like a home from home. This is our third time to the Atlantic rising area at bottom bay and we absolutely love the location and the beach. The property managers John and Jan are lovely and have always made us feel really welcome and have always helped whenever we’ve had an issue.

The villa isn’t perfect but is completely adequate for a family holiday in the sun. There are a few areas that could be improved that would make this villa a little smarter for future visitors:

- The beds are very low down and mattresses a bit lumpy.

- a deep clean is required under the furniture after each stay (very dusty)

- Lick of paint required around pool area and fill in cracks around pool.

- Sun loungers well used and one nearly broken- only two which wasn’t enough when this villa is suppose to cater for more people.

- Plumbing in toilet an issue (know this is being sorted!) and toilets seats worn

- some badly stained beach towels

- Kettle too small (only makes 3 cups of tea) and not wireless - more like a travel kettle.

- No salt and pepper, potato masher in kitchen, only one oven tray.

Hope this info helps the owner rather than it being taken badly- we would definitely return but I feel the above would make holidays run smoother. Thanks a lot! Rachel, Martin and Florie Owen xxxx

This was the perfect space for our family of 5 for our 3 week stay in Barbados!

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean and had everything we needed. The backyard with pool, hammock and loungers was wonderful and where we spent almost all of our time. We highly recommend hummingbird house and would stay here again for sure if we are lucky enough to return to Barbados.

Wonderful Villa Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the hummingbird house! Janine was really great to get us in last minute as our previous accommodation fell through. We really enjoyed the outdoor space and the close proximity to beautiful bottom bay beach. Some afternoons we were the only people on the whole beach. You are on the south east coast so if you haven't done your research just be aware that the ocean is a lot rougher around here. The property managers live close by so if you need anything they are there to assist. A vehicle is necessary though as you are a bit away from the shops. We had a really relaxing stay and I would highly reccomend this property.

Situated east of the windward isles, Barbados is an enchanting coral stone island about 26 miles long by 14 miles wide with a population of about 250,000. Our villa is located on the southeastern coast of the island and is a short stroll from the breathtaking Bottom Bay Beach, one of the most picturesque beaches in the world. There are several other stunning beaches within the immediate area including the famous beaches at The Crane and Sam Lords Castle within 5 minute drives, and lesser known secluded beaches at Cave Bay (Harrismith) and Palmetto Bay within easy walking distance. The airport is situated approximately 15 minutes away and the capital, Bridgetown, around 30 minutes from our villa.
