Les Violettes is situated in the peaceful, ancient village of Haimps,in the Cognac/Pineau producing area, surrounded by acres of vineyards and sunflowers. The space which used to be a working farm is totally enclosed by walls and once the gate is shut the rest of the world can disappear. Beautifully furnished and equipped throughout, Les Violettes has large, airy living rooms which stay cool even on hottest of days. There are 4 bedrooms - the principal bedroom is large, with a super king size bed, the second has a king size bed, the third, two single beds and the fourth, two double bunk beds. A cot is available. The bath/shower room and separate toilet are also situated upstairs.
Downstairs, the kitchen/dining room (which has a sitting area set around a fireplace with inset wood burner ), leads out on one side to the spacious sitting room which includes two sofas and features an 18th century Charentaise stone fireplace. This lounge, in turn, leads to a second lounge with two sofas, satellite TV and Wi-Fi. A utility room with a large 2nd fridge/freezer,washing machine, shower and dual hand basins as well as the second toilet can all be accessed from the other side of the kitchen. The kitchen itself is well-equipped and leads directly outside to a tranquil space that gets full sun most of the day. Sitting here, usually with a chorus of birdsong, a pair of Hoopoes might be spotted clinging the the walls, trying to extract insects with their long beaks, or the local eagle as he circles around. You will also meet Louis Le Grand, our resident lizard and several petits Louis, as they bask in the sun.
Facing here is the old wagon way with its lovely features. It is a magical place to sit, out of the sun or on a balmy evening. There is a good sized trampoline here, as well.
Across the lawn brings you to the crowning glory of this place; the pool and pool house, where the whole day could be spent as there is a kitchen with all facilities and crockery, including a barbecue. The heated pool has a shallower shelf running all the way round that doesn’t impede swimming. There is an outdoor warm shower also. The pool is shared with the swallows who like to dip down mid-flight to take a gulp of water as they pass us.
Close by is Matha, a typical market town with a full range of shops incl. supermarkets. 20 minutes’ drive away is Cognac, for the distilleries, or St Jean D'Angely for the restaurants and farmers markets. Explore the Roman amphitheatre in nearby Saintes.
The sea is an hour drive away with beaches on the Atlantic coast, on the Iles de Re, and d'Oleron, with their nearby towns of Rochefort, Royan and La Rochelle, which also happens to be the nearest airport.
