C'mon guys - grab a bargain! Our lovely gîte, Le Marronnier, named after the large chestnut tree which guards the entrance, is a 250 year old farmhouse with a private swimming pool situated on the edge of a small, pretty village in an area in the south of Burgundy called the Brionnais. This picturesque and largely unknown area is ideal for holidays with the true flavour of France.

Secluded with magnificent panoramic views over the rolling Brionnais & Roannais countryside, this character farmhouse has been sympathetically renovated and furnished to provide a mix of traditional features with modern facilities.

From the gates, the drive sweeps down to the house where there is plenty of parking (with one space in the hay barn acting as a shaded car port) beyond which is a terrace perfect for dining ‘au plein air’!

Through a gate to your left is the garden measuring just under half an acre which is mainly laid to lawn & bordered on one side by a tall laurel hedge, a row of conifers on another affording complete privacy whilst the third side is open allowing you to sit & enjoy a glass of wine looking out to the countryside beyond.

This is where the totally private swimming pool (9m x 4.5m) is located. The pool is bordered by a paved area where you can relax in the sun or there is leafy shade under the trees. There is also a barbecue area handily situated just beyond the terrace.

The front door opens onto the spacious dining area with table & seating for 8 with stereo with lead for MP3 or iPod. To the left is the sitting room complete with beamed ceiling and furnished with comfortable sofas & TV/DVD. There are two cupboards (which used to be the original door & window to the one-roomed farmhouse!) containing board games, books and DVDs. Both of these rooms have tiled floors which help keep the house cool during hot weather.

To the right of the dining room is the open plan, galley style kitchen area (hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher & plenty of cooking utensils, crockery & cutlery), the downstairs loo, laundry room (washing machine, iron & ironing board plus sink) & storage room for cleaning equipment – all of these rooms are also tiled for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Up a short flight of stairs, there are 4 bedrooms – two twins & a double with a king size bed at the front of the house overlooking the garden & a further double bedroom near the two smart shower rooms. All bedrooms have wardrobes complete with a variety of good quality wooden hangers, a chest of drawers, chair, hairdryer & fan.

For your convenience, all linen is provided including bed linen, towels & swimming towels - even tea towels! All beds are made up ready for your arrival.

About Jacqueline Murphy

After careers in I.T., Elite Gîtes was set up in 2005 by husband and wife team, David and Jacqueline Murphy.

As a family, we had rented gîtes in different areas of France and we spent many happy times together experiencing what France has to offer. However, we always felt that it could have been a better experience for us – and we are sure you will sympathise with maybe better kitchen appliances and equipment, perhaps a better standard of accommodation and/or cleanliness or even the beds made up before we arrived – we’re sure you know what we mean! Like many others, we dreamt of having our own gîtes business in France and we wanted to offer the best possible quality gîte you could have at a reasonable rental.

To this end, we moved to France in 2002 and have spent the last 10 years renovating 4 properties - 2 of which now form the basis of Elite Gites property portfolio. We also operate a Chambre d'hote (bed & breakfast) from our own home. Over the past 13 years we have welcomed many satisfied clients to our properties.

Why Jacqueline Murphy chose Charolles area

When we first came to France to view potential properties to buy, we were shown Le Marronnier. It was in a very sad state - nearly everything was decorated dark brown and very shabby. However, we felt that we could update the interior to make a comfortable holiday home given its location in a village in beautiful southern Burgundy. With open plan living downstairs and four good sized bedrooms upstairs we also knew that this configuration would be ideal for and suit many holidaymakers - whether they be families with young children keen on activities or groups of older travellers looking for tranquility.

What makes this house unique

Le Marronnier dates back about 250 years and the original one roomed house is still visible as it is now the sitting room. The floor above would have been for the storage of hay and the rest of the house would have been for the animals and equipment. Some of the stonework is very old and may have come from even older properties long demolished!!! There are even a couple of old stone columns in the garden which may have come from local ruins - maybe even the Benedictine abbey in nearby Charlieu!

Great holiday for 2 families

We spent a fortnight here (2 families each with children aged 7, 5 and 1) and had a lovely time. We brought our own bikes and the countryside was perfect for some adult running or cycling, but also easy for the children on the new cycle routes nearby (we took the bikes down to the cycle path as it was flatter there for our 5 year old who was only just off stabilisers). The village itself was very quiet - in fact the local shop and cafe had closed for their own holidays. Pool was perfect for the children and shallow at one end meaning the 5 year olds could stand up with no problem. The house itself was well equipped and very clean and the owners were both helpful and pleasant. Storage for bikes was in the barn and secure.

Wonderful stay in Le Marronnier

We rent houses in Europe every year, and Le Marronnier was one of our favorites. The house is spotlessly clean and meticulously planned down to the last detail, which added greatly to the quality of our stay -- no desperate searches for tin-openers or clean towels. The furnishings and bedding are fresh and tasteful, and the garden has lovely views over the hills. The settting is charming and quiet, with lovely walks in the countryside, which is beautiful with rolling green hills and lots of nearby Romanesque churches. The hosts of Le Marronnier are so friendly, kind and welcoming -- we felt as if we were staying with friends! They hit just the right note of accessibility when we needed help, while allowing us our privacy. We have so many happy memories and would love to return one day.

Be aware that the village is a little remote -- not a criticism, but it quickly became obvious that trips to big tourist spots like Lyon and Dijon would take too long, so we adjusted our plans in order to spend less time in the car and more time in nearer towns and villages. Highly recommend Cluny. And don't use your GPS! It takes you along tiny country roads, instead of major highways -- use the map instead.

Our recommendation for a fantastic, memorable day: rent bicycles in the little, local town of Charlieu, ask the shop owner to deliver the bikes to Le Marronier, pack a picnic and cycle down the long, gradual hill to Charlieu (stopping en route to enjoy your picnic). Cycle round Charlieu, taking in the marketplace, the Abbey and the Couvent des Cordeliers and some of the ancient pilgrim route of St. Iago de Compostella, then return the bikes to the rental shop and ask the very friendly owner to drive you back to Le Marronnier -- a wonderful time!!

Lovely renovated farmhouse

We had a wonderful relaxing week in a lovely villa located in a quiet village with wonderful views of the stunnuing local countryside. The villa was clean and well equipped with a lovely pool area and outside terrace for eating. The owners were charming and helpful.

Le Marronnier is situated on the edge of the village of Fleury La Montagne in the very south of Burgundy. The village has a small cafe (home-cooked meals are available on request) and a small grocery store.

Within easy reach are the vineyards of Burgundy and Beaujolais, the volcanic region around Le Puy, Lyon - the second city in France plus many pretty villages, historic churches all waiting to be explored locally. Cycling, walking, canoeing are all available for the more active visitor and leisurely trips along the Roanne-Digoin canal for the less active! The nearest towns are Charlieu and Roanne both of which have local markets (Wednesday/Saturday and Tuesday/Friday respectively) and a good range of shops - both food and non-food!

There are many local restaurants offering a variety of menus (and prices!) and many cafes offering a traditional 'Menu du Jour' - always good value!

Other Activities: Ski-ing is available at the ski stations at Chalmazel and Loges les Gardes, both under an hour's drive away.
