Courtenay House is a large Georgian family holiday house, much lighter & more spacious than most holiday cottages, in a prime harbour front position in the centre of the old village of Port Isaac. It has been used as a much-loved family holiday home, holiday cottage ,writers retreat and artists studio for many years, and is available to rent, furnished to a high standard. The Grade II listed house was, in the nineteenth century, the home of the merchant Warwick Richard Guy, who owned many ships and businesses in Port Isaac including the historic Port Gaverne fish cellars.

The house can accommodate from a single couple in luxury up to 8 people. Well behaved pets are also welcome for which we make a small charge.

Just steps away from the beach, the house has sea views. From the garden there is a high level lawn with fantastic views across the harbour and out to sea, and there is a dining and barbecue terrace below this.

For the winter there is a comfortable sitting room with a large log fire. For the summer there is easy and safe access to the beach, even for young children, with a bathroom and another separate shower room, washing machine and dryer for your return. The local beach is great for families, and there are many other bathing and surfing beaches nearby.

It has two double bedrooms, and a twin room. There is also a children's room with two single beds in the former artists studio in the converted loft.

For entertainment there is a TV with DVD player and board games in the sitting room, and a good quality CD music player with i-pod connection in the dining room. Electricity, gas, logs & broadband are included in the rental.

The cafes and restaurants of Port Isaac are all a short stroll away.

For those who would like to cook, the large well equipped kitchen has a professional Lacanche range cooker and two fridges, a dishwasher and microwave. The renowned fish merchant Dennis Knight is a few doors away.

We regret no smoking within the house.

Garage parking for 2 cars are included. They are located further up the village, about a 250 metre walk from the house with easy access to the main road.

Why Mike & Sue Ross chose Port Isaac

We have been coming to Port Isaac now for 35 years. It is an idyllic fishing village which in more recent years has become known to many more as the location of the TV series Doc Martin. Finally we have acquired the house that we have loved from the moment we first saw it all those years ago. Located in the heart of the village just yards from the harbour next to all the amenities it will suit families of all ages. Once visited, few fail to return to this beautiful part of England's coastline.

What makes this house unique

Whether it is the perfect location just by the harbour, the views from the garden across the roof tops of the village and out to sea across the harbour wall or just sitting next to the log fire after a hard days walk, this house will make you feel very at home.

Wonderful house in an enchanting location.

Our family of 4 (plus in-laws) have just returned from an absolutely wonderful week in Port Isaac at Courtenay House.

The house is well equipped and had absolutely everything we could have wanted from a memorable half term break.

The location itself could not have been better. The hustle and bustle of a working port is hugely endearing with the bay providing our kids hours of fun finding crabs, shells (if there are any left, most of them are in my car!) and beach gems.

With easy access to Port Gaverne (lovely little bay with lots of water sports), Rock, Padstow and Polseath there is plenty to do.

The rooms at the top of the house are very bright, so if you need to use them I recommend taking some blackout blinds or eye patches.

Recommend this to any families looking for a relaxing, but operational port location.

The pictures don’t do this house justice, a great, roomy, family house. A perfect base in a great location for staying in Port Isaac & travelling further afield. Plenty of space for two families both with children under 3 - & a Labrador! Would stay again!

Fantastic week in Port Isaac

The house was very spacious and comfortable with generous sized bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen was a great place to cook, eat and play games all together, although we didn't get along well with the Aga. It was very centrally located and we enjoyed the proximity to the harbour, restaurants and the South West Coastal Path. The parking garages, although very dirty and tight, were a godsend as it is impossible to park near the house.

The only thing we didn't like were the two bedrooms on the top floor. They were light, spacious and airy, BUT a deathtrap in a fire as they could only be accessed by a very narrow wooden staircase with a rope to pull yourself up. Two of our party couldn't even go up there due to knee problems and vertigo. The stairs and top rooms were completely covered in a hessian carpet, which would spread fire throughout the rooms in minutes. There is no escape route. It needs an emergency fire ladder into the back garden and visible fire extinguishers at the top and bottom of the stairs.

Owner's Response: Dear Jenny Thank you for your review of Courtenay House. We're very glad that you had a lovely time in Port Isaac. I'm a little concerned about your comments regarding the top floor being a "death trap" with access issues. It is a proper staircase up to the second floor albeit with slightly steeper steps and it is a little narrower but it is not difficult to use for the vast majority of guests. The rope is mainly there for additional help and more attractive than a wooden rail, but most do not feel the need to use it. We were not aware of having to make an accommodation for some of your guests, perhaps those in your party with vertigo and knee issues would have been better placed on the first floor? If you had let us know these serious conditions were potential issues, we would have been happy to have worked with you on the matter. The carpet is no different to any other and as such I can assure you is no more flammable than any other carpet. On top of that it is mainly covered by rugs, again, no more flammable than any other rug. The house is Grade II listed and 180 years old, so there is no possibility of placing a fire ladder into the back garden from the second floor. That would go for any of the houses in Port Isaac which is in an area of specific historic interest. Besides, if a guest was struggling with the stairs, it is highly unlikely they could mount a Velux window and then scale an escape ladder. Whilst we feel your comments on this subject are a little unfair, we will change the description of the property to say that those with severe walking difficulties should consider not using the second floor. We won't though add any comments regarding Vertigo as I think those with the condition (I have experienced it myself recently) would know to avoid heights, not that the house is that tall. Whilst a fire extinguisher is not required by law, that would be a good thing to have so thank you for the suggestion, we will arrange at the end of the season. To summarise, perhaps the person booking did not fully consider the requirements of all of the party members? Despite your issues on the second floor, I hope it did not detract too much from an enjoyable stay and that these comments allay the concerns of any future guests who are very welcome to talk to us about accommodating any specific requirements that they may have. Excellent house and location.

We had a great time in Port Issac staying in this well maintained clean and tidy house. We would stay there again if on holiday in the area as it was a great base for exploring the area. There were several good restaurants and pubs just a minute or so from the house or more just 10 minutes walk up the hill. We had a great time. It was also great fun having a beer while watching the local fishermen landing the catch at the beach.

Great place in Port Isaac

We had a great time staying at Mike and Sue's house in Port Isaac, you really couldn't find a house that's closer to the harbor and all that this wonderful fishing village has to offer. The house is very spacious and was comfortable for our party of 7, everything you need is there and the house has been undergoing some nice upgrading, new bathroom / shower etc. One thing I didn't realize until we arrived is that the village has very small winding streets with little or no parking close by, thankfully the owners have thought of this and have secured the use of 2 garages in the village, once you arrive there you will realize this is a huge benefit. I would highly recommend this house for anybody looking to spend some time in Cornwall, its very well located to enjoy the surrounding area. One other recent upgrade is the addition of a nice new AGA in the kitchen, it made for a great place for the family to gather and enjoy cooking a nice breakfast every morning.

We definitely left Port Isaac with some great memories.
