About Joseph Walsh
Joe and Marian reside and work in Saratoga Springs, New York. They have a private law practice, Walsh & Walsh, LLP. Joe first came to the Boothbay during his high school and college years, spending the summers of 1967-72 working at Burleigh Hill, a boys' sailing camp owned and operated by Joe's junior high school gym teacher and coach, Lester Rhoads. Burleigh Hill operated as a camp from 1955 to 1975, and was also a registered yacht club that each summer competed against other state and New England yacht clubs. After the camp ceased operations, Joe continued to vacation at the former camp property with his family (wife Marian and sons Colin and Pete) as a guest of the owner until the owner's death in 2000. In 2004, Joe and Marian purchased the Quarry Farm property that is about 4 miles away from Burleigh Hill and built the house in 2006. Joe and Marian practice law together with one other partner.

Why Joseph Walsh chose Edgecomb
Joe has been associated with Boothbay since 1967 and has spent at least a part of each summer since then in the region. Joe introduced Marian to the region in 1985. When the former Burleigh Hill property was sold by the heir of Lester Rhoads in 2001, Joe and Marian continued to vacation in the region for several years, and then decided to buy their own property. Joe and Marian and the boys first viewed the Quarry Farm property on a bitterly cold January day, but everyone immediately said 'this is it'. Over the fireplace mantel, the Burleigh Hill Yacht Club Burgee continues to fly!
What makes this House unique
Some of the major factors that attracted the family to this property are its proximity to the major population centers of Boothbay Harbor, Wiscasset and Damariscotta, and yet the house enjoys an incredibly peaceful, quiet and idyllic setting overlooking the Sheepscot River with almost 180 degree views up and down the river from the property. At night, there are no lights to be seen across the river, as the opposite shore remains largely undeveloped. The night sky, with little ambient light, highlights the stars. The two roads that access the property from either Route 1 or Route 27 can also be truly described as scenic; the Mill Road winds and turns and offers views of river coves at two points, while the Cross Point Road runs along the Sheepscot River for most of its length. A stay at the property thus allows each day to begin and end in a very private and peaceful way, yet the day itself can be spent enjoying the many things to do and see in Mid Coast Maine.

Immmaculate Way Beyond Expectations
This house is immaculate way beyond expectations. Owners have obviously lavished it with care. The linens, towels, and bedding were of good quality. Dishes, glassware and flatware were of excellent quality. The appliances were top of the line. The only negatives I would mention are the lack of ceiling fans, and no reading lamps or nightstands by the beds. We purchased a fan, large mixing bowl, potato peeler, and small lamps at the nearest Wal Mart. For those with the room in their vehicle, a crock pot would be nice. If you went on a trip each day, your meal would be ready when you return in the evening. Restaurants in the area we particularly enjoyed were Sarah's, Reds Eats, and Treats (excellent chicken pies that are available for take out along with soups, sandwiches, etc.) all in Wiscasset. We did not enjoy Bintliffs. In Bath, we particularly liked J.R. Maxwells on the main shopping street downtown. The owners were concerned about making the house comfortable and we would recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet and beautiful vacation spot. Members of our party enjoyed Kayaking, Whale Watches, Botanical Gardens, Outlet Shopping, the many Lobster Pounds in the area and visiting Acadia National Park. The locals were extremely friendly and helpful.
Owner will provide window fans for future guests, though generally evening temperatures quickly drop to comfortable levels, and house has over 50 large windows for ventilation. Night stands and additional lamps will be added in the near future (looking for suitable antique or custom made tables).
All we hoped for
We spent Thanksgiving week at the house, hoping for a truly peaceful and secluded getaway. We found exactly what we wanted. The house is very comfortable, spacious, well-maintained, and clean. We spent most our time in the great room, enjoying the lovely view of the river and the fireplace. Joe was very helpful and answered all questions about the house and surroundings. We most certainly recommend this property and hope to go back time and again.
Comfortable and peaceful near Boothbay Harbor
The house is modern, well equipped and in good condition. It is in a neighbourhood of large properties on big lots. There are lots of trees and thus it is very private. Three separate en suite bedrooms ensure privacy. The internet is good; the TV system only fair: clunky system and not a lot of choice of channels. The house is about 10 miles from Boothbay Harbor village and is close to Wiscasset which is a little place with a lot going for it.
We duly acknowledge that "the TV system [is] only fair: clunky system"! We have little choice but for Time Warner (now Spectrum) Cable, and the remote controller is not intuitive, at least not for us "60 some things".
As a matter of choice, we subscribe only to the basic cable service, which provides all of the major networks and public television, and Spectrum also has limited free Movies on Demand. We encourage our guests to be out exploring the wonders of Mid Coast Maine during their stay, but we will certainly try to improve the cable viewing experience for guests in the future.
The Sounds of Silence
This is a great house for two couples who want both time together and private space. The two generously sized master bedrooms with en suite baths and lots of closet space are on different floors and different ends of the house so if your traveling companions snore, you’ll never hear it – or be bothered by their late night or early morning TV watching if you like to sleep in. Two additional bedrooms provide space for more family or friends and the generous dining room table offers space to entertain and serve what you cook up in the well set up kitchen. There is enough room for multiple cooks to work their magic at the same time. The wifi is fast and capable of handling multiple devices at the same time.
Set back away from Edgecomb, this is a somewhat remote location, with multiple outside spots to sit and enjoy a book or a glass of wine and just listen to the quiet. And it is blissfully quiet. But you are less than 15 minutes from Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor or the famous Red’s Eats in Wiscasset.
You’ll find great lobster to cook at home at nearby’s Pinkham’s seafood in Boothbay and lobster rolls around nearly every corner. Edgecomb is less than an hour from Brunswick (great farmers market Tuesdays and Fridays plus the art gallery at Bowden College), Rockland’s Wyeth Museum at the Farnham, light houses at Pemiquid Point and Popham Beach and Rockland and great whale watching out of Boothbay Harbor. This is a great base for a mid-coast Maine getaway
Beautiful riverside getaway.
The home was extremely nice inside and out and we especially enjoyed the secluded setting along the river after spending the day sightseeing or shopping. The location is very convenient to the local attractions with the only draw back being everyone likes the area and the main highway can be hard to access at times. After we learned the back roads that was no longer a problem. All in all a wonderful vacation spot and highly recommended.
Quiet location, spacious and full of light
The house is in a quiet location, spacious and full of light. I enjoyed using the kitchen that was well-equipped for gourmet cooking, as well as enjoying reading and relaxing in the lovely large living and dining room areas. The soaking tub in the master bedroom suite was a bonus. For those looking for a quiet getaway in a private setting on the river or those looking to enjoy time in the Boothbay region with their families, this is an excellent choice of place to stay. The owner, Joe, was communicative, professional and personable. I look forward to booking this lovely home in the future and am certain others will enjoy their time here, too.
