I am one of 4, who grew up coming to Appledore as a kid. North Devon was where my father was from (his father was the local doctor). We left Devon as a family a long time ago but retained our link through this place.
Richard purchased this House in 1998
A perfect family house in a great location.
We loved the ever changing views from the house.
Thank you for taking the time to confirm you had a good week. We are glad to hear that. You are always welcome back, if/when that suits.
Fantastic in everyway! The house have everything you could need and the photos don't do it justice!
Six adults, one infant and a dog recently had the pleasure of staying in Richard's house for one week. The house has everything you could possibly need. The location is fantastic - a three minute walk from town and a two minute walk from a really lovely restaurant (the Royal George). The sea comes right up to the back wall of the house, where there are deck chairs as well as a table (suitable for eating at) and chairs. The house is large and roomy, even with 6.5 ish beings in it. Richard was super helpful at all stages of booking and arrival. I can't say enough good things about this property! Thanks Richard! :)
Fabulous house with amazing views over the estuary
We (two adults, three older teens) had a wonderful stay at the Old Boathouse on Irsha Street. The house is immaculate and really well-presented, with stunning views over the River Torridge estuary. Lovely views from the conservatory, and everything you could need is provided: it's a really lovely home. I should mention as well the extremely prompt correspondence with Richard, the owner, and a v helpful guide to the house and the area which he provides.
Appledore itself has quirky shops and good pubs with live music from local musicians (the Beaver Inn, the Champ). A really nice community feel to the village. Everything is within easy walking distance of the house. There's a lovely local ferry ride (run by volunteers) across to Instow, or at low tide you can walk round to Northam Burrows from the quay. There are many things to do in the area- we really liked the sculpture gardens at Broomhill and the cliff walks at Hartland; also many good beaches nearby, within half an hour's drive. The newly re-opened Royal George pub (1 minute down the road on foot) has stunning views (as does the house!) and served great food- we had lunch there, as it was fully booked for dinner over a couple of days.
My favourite thing in the house was probably the conservatory- where we had our meals, played board games, read books, or just sat and looked out at the changing tides. Completely relaxing. I hope we will come back here one day; it was magical.
A real gem
Deceptively large, well equipped property with good facilities and unbelievable views of the estuary. A pleasure to get up every morning just to look out of the window. Ideally situated right in the heart of Appledore. Three pubs close by. Lots going on in the town. Shops, fishing, pleasure boating. Museums, etc. etc. Great food at the Seagate Hotel. Ideally situated for days out to Westward Ho! Bideford, Barnstaple. Catch the ferry over to Instow etc. You can even go crabbing of the back patio. Thanks for a great holiday Richard. We will be back.
Wonderful, large, perfectly positioned holiday home. Facilities provided second to none!
Myself, husband and two teenagers stayed at this gem over the New Year. It was superb! The photo's don't do it justice. We've rented numerous holiday homes over the years and this is certainly one of the best. We'll definitely be back!!
Clean, comfortable and located in a beautiful spot
The Old Boatyard is a wonderful cottage for a family holiday, built on the estuary side of Irsha Street, close to the main Appledore carpark.
The layout of the cottage is ideal for two families to use, as there are two bedrooms and a bathroom on the top floor; the lounge, kitchen and the conservatory are on the middle floor, at street entrance level; and two further bedrooms and a bathroom are downstairs at courtyard garden level.
The cottage is extremely well equipped, as it is used by the owners, and the checklist provided is very useful for the things you won't need to bring. Lots of toys for children, and the opportunity to fish for crabs off the sea wall at high tide. There are books and dvds too, but you won't need any of them as the view from the conservatory will take all your attention!
One point to note; Irsha Street is one way, and very narrow. Unloading the car develops skills of speediness and team work. Don't be harassed by drivers coming up behind you, but expect one or two to lack patience! Parking costs about £3 per day, and you can pay on your phone using the Parkmobile app.
The village has everything you need, although you may pay a little more for groceries in John's. There are pubs and coffee shops dotted about; nice gift shops and places selling local art. Appledore has a real community feel about it, with the gig teams and the RNLI crew being at the heart of the place. You don't need to venture out of the village for a relaxing stay, but the beach at Westward Ho is a draw for a long walk at low tide.
One other note; Appledore is very dog friendly, so if you have a problem with Rover and Fido being allowed everywhere, it may not be the spot for you. On the other hand, our two love it, especially all the free biscuits!
Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review. Very fair and accurate, albeit I'd point out that I have not paid a penny for parking in 30+ years of coming to Appledore as a driver, always managing to find street parking on the top road. There is always that option for the cheap!
Please come back, you'd be most welcome.
We provide to our guests a full guide on how the house and the area.
