Very convenient but mixed feelings about the property

  • 3 of 5

The upstairs lounge is lovely, especially when the sun shines in. The kitchen is VERY dark, but not helped by missing light bulbs and no suitable replacement. It is also cold (Yes, in June). Oven idiosyncratic. The scullery is damp. The ensuite bedroom could do with proper curtains to cut out broad daylight at 4 am. A mirror over the wash basin would aid shaving. We had to keep plunging the shower (obviously not unusual as plunger provided). Thankfully we are slim, as a large person would have difficulty getting into the ensuite as the door doesn’t open wide because of the bed. The loose rugs on the floor throughout the house are a trip hazard.

It was helpful to know how much was on the gas meter when we arrived as we then just topped it up on leaving. Telling folk to do so at the start means people will overpay, but you probably know that. Getting the key at the start was a challenge as the box is hidden behind shrubbery at a house with no number, just a name!

Having said all that, Belford is a good base for getting to some beautiful places, and having parking so close was ideal.

We did enjoy our stay but:

  • 3 of 5

The bedrooms and the upstairs sitting room were lovely. The downstairs was very dark and gloomy. The upstairs bathroom was also very dark so we didn't use it. There were odd things like light bulbs missing, and no hairdryer which we managed without but had just assumed there would be one. The lack of Wifi didn't bother me but the young people were horrified but again did manage without for four days. They made a valid point which is other people will be put off booking because of this but perhaps Alison is not bothered. The house was warm and homely but just had a bit of a tired feel to it. We loved the area and it was a brilliant location for getting to places. We will definitely come to the area again but will go for something more modern. Alison was very helpful when ever I contacted her which I am very grateful for.

Owner's Response: Firstly, I apologise that there were light bulbs missing. Not acceptable.... I will contact my cleaner/property carer. There should have been at least one hairdryer, normally in the ensuite bedroom dressing table draw. Another should have been in the front room wardrobe . Again I will chase up. Yes the downstairs does not have as much light as upstairs. I am lucky in the fact that there are two sitting rooms.... one big bright light one up stairs and the smaller one downstairs is smaller and darker, but ideal for a cozy day or evening just reading or chilling with an open log fire!! I do not have WiFi as I feel people are here for a holiday and want to escape from social media. I have never advertised having WiFi and did let you know. Most people have it on their phones and it is available literally 30 seconds away in the Blue Bell Hotel if a necessity. I have noted all your feedback which is always so useful and I will work on things that can be improved!! Everyone’s opinions are so helpful as we all see things differently and have different perceptions! Its all about getting the balance right for everyone!! Thank you.

A gem of a property.

  • 4 of 5

We are both admirers of old houses, and we loved the period features, particularly the stained glass/leaded windows, the shutters on the windows, the original fireplaces, sash windows and the stand-alone bath. The upper drawing room, with Peruvian furniture was stunning, with lovely views to the old square. Also, the private garden at the rear was a delight to sit in.

The property was very well situated. It was close to the beautiful Northumbrian beaches and to the hills if you enjoy walking. There is so much to do in this are that. in only one week we did not even scratch the surface.
