My name is Bruno, I'm 46, I live and work in Milano.
I took mi first steps in this field 10 years ago when I started letting my parent's holiday-home in Rapallo not far from Portofino, in the Ligurian Riviera, Italy.
Since the very beginning it was a great experience both for my guests and myself: they anjoyed my attitude to the hospitality and I learned more and more about how to turn an apartment into a perfect holiday accomodaton.
Everything in the apartment is clearly of good quality; its position is convenient and quite. Great for a relaxing holiday.
My stay at Villa Elisa was outstanding. We had a hiccup arriving there because the address given to use was not correct. But Elisabetta, the owner, was there waiting for me and guided me to the right place. Elisabetta is such a wonderful host! She was very helpful and sweet to us. She went out of her way to make sure we had all the info we would need for our stay. She is also a wealth of information about where to eat and where to go.
The house was clean and exactly as advertised. The house has three levels, and plenty of space, which proved perfect for my party of 12. I was there right in the middle of June, and there was, as I understand it, a bit of an uncharacteristic heat wave. Thus, the house was a tad warm (for me), but opening the windows solved that issue. I live in Texas and my A/C runs all day because I keep my house at 68 so I'm used to having a very cool house. In other words, my opinion as to the house being warm might not be totally on point.
The view from the house is just awesome awesome! You are on the side of a mountain, so you can see Santa Margherita on the valley below. Getting down to Santa Margherita is relatively straightforward. You can drive there, although parking is not easy. I found a parking garage where I left my van all day for, I think, about 15 euros. You can walk to Santa Margherita, but it takes a while. There is a bus stop a few steps from the house, but the bus does not run all day.
I'm not sure what else to say, other than I highly recommend Villa Elisa, if you are visiting with a big party.
We (10 friends) stayed in the villa for a wedding in the area. We all had our own rooms with room to spare. Villa was very clean, kitchen practical to use. We enjoyed the terrace the most, great sea view on one side, the hills on the other side. The pool was also refreshing after a long day out. Location was also central and close to everywhere.
Only setback was the insufficient parking space 150 meters from the property; we eventually parked one vehicle in the villa itself, bu the road there is very narrow-we scratched a mirror, luckily we had insurance.
Elisabetta and her husband were very friendly and helpful, we only wish we spent more time in the villa.
Everything we needed. Great location, beautiful view. Villa was exactly as advertised. Difficult location to find though. Better directions and landmarks would be helpful. Best pizza just up the road along with other restaurants close by that had very memorable meals. I would recommend Villa Elisa to anyone visiting the area.
Here you have some infos about the area from Genova to Cinque Terre.
They are ment to help you enjoy the places I love and know best and the ones it might be more difficult to bump in just walking around. You'll also find some general hints, that may sound funny or useless if you allready know Italy but will turn usefull if it is the first time you are in my country.
Consider that I usually visit the area in winter and during weekend (I love Liguria but I live in Milano), in summer time there are many other places to check.
In Italy 'bar' does not only mean a place to drink alcohol in the evening, most of the time is a place to have a coffè and croissant in the morning maybe (but not necessary) at the counter.
'caffè' is more a place to seat and spend time. The difference it is not so sharp and you can spend as much time as you want in both.
Very nice also Caffè Defilla in Chiavari in corso Garibaldi.
My favourites are:
-Hostaria Vecchia Rapallo, Via Fratelli Cairoli, 24-25 tel
-Focaccia in Riviera, it is just at the beginning of via Zunino (or at the end if you arrive from the apartment). Try their Focaccia di Recco (cheese focaccia ) it’s eccellent.
Bagni Molo (in summer is also restaurant) Marzia: (phone number hidden)
- Bar Sole, great location.
U Bansin Via Venezia, 104 tel: (phone number hidden) very easy but but the food is good
U Giancu Via San Massimo - tel: a must if you have little kids. They will love it. It's far from the center and the apt, you can go there by bus (direction San Massimo) by car or taxi
Trattoria Da Mario, Piazza Garibaldi, 23,
if you love pizza: Pizzeria Bella Napoli, Corso Colombo,
Almost all of the places on the Passeggiata are ok. To pick out some two names: Hotel Miramare and Da Monique.
My favourites are:
- Caffè del Porto Via Tomaso Bottaro, 32 tel: (phone number hidden), traditional cuisine easy and quite inexpensive.
- Capo Nord: (it's actually between Santa Margherita and Paraggi) unfortunately it is open only in summer. Very romantic, you really eat 'pieds dans l'eau'.
There are also some other nice places in the area by Piazza Vittorio Veneto and at the beginning of Calata del Porto but sometimes they are a little snobish and the gap between what you pay and what you get is too high. In summer is really crowded. Consider that Santa Margherita is one of the favourite places for young scion of northern Italy rich families to show off, in winter is different.
My favourites are:
- Polpo Mari my favourite dish is 'misto all'antica' and my favourite wine is: Vermentino di Laura Aschero
- Cantine Cattaneo: Via Vicinale della Madonnetta, 1 tel: you need to go there by car or you can take a taxi from Sestri Levante.
Portobello: Via Portobello, 16 -in the baia del silenzio
Asseu: via G.B. da Ponzerone, 2 take the road from Sestri Levante to Moneglia, the restaurant is just after Riva Trigoso. You need a car or you can take a taxi from Sestri Levante.
Ristorante dei Castelli: the owner is the same of Polpo Mario. Very nice location and good food but, in my opinion, a little too expensive. I prefer Polpo Mario.
Ruta di Camogli:
Nonna Nina (excellent traditional ligurian cuisine) you have to go by car or take a taxi from Santa Margherita or Camogli. You can also take a 15-20 min walk from the bus stop of Ruta.
If you go there for lunch and don't mind walking (and little trekking), you can spend the afternoon on the path from Ruta to Punta Chiappa and then from Punta Chiappa to the village of Camogli, wich is beautifull.
Gelaterie (icecream places)
Frigidarium (just by the castle)
Gelateria del Polpo (under the arcades at the beginning of via Mazzini)
Gelateria Centrale try Pinguino (chocolate dipped ice cream)
Baciollo (my top favourite) try: crema con fichi e noci (figues and nut) and ricotta e cotognata.
Places to have a drink from 7 p.m. till late and for APERITIVO
Aperitivo is normally served with a little food that sometimes it is not just 'a little'.
In some places, in summer, you may find 'happy hour' wich is served from 7pm to 9pm: you only pay for the drink and are aloud to help yourself as much as you like with food. It is the italian version of 'tapas'.
Enoteca Il castello
Bar le saline
Caffè Defilla in corso Garibaldi
There are two bars in the 'baia del silenzio', one is by Hotel Helvetia and the other one is almost on the other side of the bay. Both of them are very nice.
Enoteca Winter Rose
They are both on calata Marconi on your left side looking at the sea.
