About the property

Yellow House, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5 )

This unique property sits on 40 acres at the east end of Lake Isabella just off Hwy 178. About 2 1/2 hours north of Los Angeles, the Hillside Ranch has the illusion of remoteness. It's only a quarter mile away from a super market, and gas station and only 20 minutes away from Kernville where rafting and fishing trips can be booked. Enjoy a sanctuary that offers peace and quiet with unobstructed views of the lake and mountains. Enjoy the beautiful estate-sized lawns surrounded by hundreds of trees for shade and privacy. By day watch your kids and dogs play and by night roast marshmallows at the open fire pit.

There are 3 historically charming, 1930's style homes were moved onto the property in 1950 from the town of Whiskey Flat, 'Kernville' the houses have been a part of the Hillside Ranch and Kern River Valley history for almost a hundred years. Please be our guests, and enjoy. I can E-mail more pictures of all the houses, just click on my home page link, right above the pictures. Thanks, Bruce

And we're GREEN, we produce all of our power for landscaping with a Bergey 10K wind turbine and an Aeromotor windmill.

About Bruce Richardson

I am a retired sound effects editor from the film industry. I am married with two children. I have been a Mr. Mom, a carpenter, a drywall hanger, a handyman, a potter, a hippie, a college drop out, a landscape gardener, a traveler, a surfer, a tennis player, made a couple of short films and wrote 6 bad screenplays. That's not all but I don't want to brag. My wife has done a bunch of stuff too but she won't talk about it.... that's probably a good idea.

Bruce Richardson purchased this house in 1994

Why Bruce Richardson chose Weldon

In 1994 after looking all over California for about 10 years in hopes of finding an old farm house I could fix up, I stumbled across this property and fell in love. The spot looked pretty good to me, I thought it had great potential. And what the hell, the price was right, so I bought it and started planting trees. It didn't looked to good in those days but I thought with a little hard work, I’d have this place whipped into shape in 5 years, tops. The year was 1994, I was 44 years old, in good health, and ready to go.

Now, in 2014, I’m 64 years old. I’ve been bit, stung and sun burned more times then I can remember. Remarkably my health is still pretty good, but shockingly I’m still not done. But, I’m not giving up either. Anyway, it’s been a labor of love, I hope you have as much fun playing here, as I have had working here.

What makes this house unique

It is very quiet and the view ain't bad either.

5/26/08It was a pleasure to stay at The Ranch. The place is way better than what it seems in the pictures. Marie and her husband were very nice. Astonishing Experience

  • 5 of 5

This amazing ranch is a hidden gem! It was the perfect property for my family reunion with my parents and the families of my siblings. The three homes were very clean, fully equipped, warm, and charming. The surrounding views were incredible especially waking up in the morning. When we arrived, the grass was lush green and the kids enjoyed running around the vast space filled with outdoor activities. Magically, just a few hours before NYE, snow started falling turning the whole ranch into a winter wonderland. I made for a fun evening of making snow angels on the fresh snow, and cozy hot chocolate. You can see Lake Isabella from the property, and its not too far from the town groceries and restaurants. Another wonderful aspect is that it isn't too far from Los Angeles. And if you are travelling from San Francisco, plan ahead and you'll have a beautiful scenic drive down from Yosemite through the Sequoias.

My sister's family had an easy time hooking up their RV to the property and thoroughly enjoyed the space where she parked.

It was always a joy communicating with Bruce. He made organizing and planning my family reunion easy. He has reasonable rules for the care of his home, and can be easily contacted when you have further questions. It felt like a close relative opening and sharing his treasured home with us.

I would love to return to this property every chance I can get. Every member of my family was truly astonished by the property. Although it is secluded, and seemed a distance from major landmarks, the property in itself was enough to amuse us. We didn't have the urge to leave to go somewhere else to enjoy. We were purely satisfied to stay and relish each other's company in peach and harmony.

fabulous setting, spectacular views, comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

This is my third time staying here and have stayed in 2 of the 3 houses (red and yellow) in summer and fall. The houses are comfortable, kitchens are well outfitted, great barbecue patio. The view from the porches is idyllic - just mountains and the basin. The light is lovely morning and evening. Great place to say. Can't find a black widow, just lizards and birds.

Perfect seclusion

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a family reunion, and had a great time! We rented all 3 houses and bbq'd, went to the river, played volleyball and walked around. The peace was wonderful.

The ONLY downside, was the really alarming amount of black widows. Other than that, it doesn't get any more idyllic than this!

Los Angeles

  • 5 of 5

A few weeks ago a couple of friends with their teenage boys said they were coming to Los Angeles to visit. We decided it would be nice to get away from the city and head into the wilderness. We were looking for a place where 2 couples with teenagers could have privacy, and those 3 bungalows decorated with taste were perfect. Coffee in the morning on the porch contemplating the mountains in the back ground, lunch by the lake (only a few minutes drive away) and diner under the stars...when I say stars I mean the whole Galaxy !!! Laying on the grass we all looked for satellites and shooting stars...what a unique experience !!! I will definetely come back maybe on a more romantic getaway (without the kids!!! and by the way it is only 2 and a half hour drive through beautiful landscapes...

truly worth it !

Fabulous and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed in the Yellow House and the property was so amazing, secluded but with all the amenities my teenage boys needed-wi-fi, cable. There is a beautiful outdoor gazebo for al fresco dining and the thick lawn was perfect for our frisbee tossing during the day and star gazing at night. Can't recommend this ranch enough.

Love, love, love this place!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful views! Quiet. Wild life to enjoy! Comfortable! Loved the vintage-ness of the Yellow House! The whole property was special! Went back in time....had laughs with family....my dog loved it! It had everything you needed and more! Bruce & ranch hands were very very kind and caring and the transaction was smooth! A must visit kinda place! Put your feet up throw your bag down...ah. Everything you would need is nearby, gas, groceries (employee's very kind), eateries(very kind), and Kernville! There are the lake and the river areas. We were there to rest and reunite with family who live nearby in Bodfish. Thanks again Bruce!
