Beautiful spacious property
We had a great stay here. The rooms are a good size, the grounds and pool and lovely, and the location is perfect for people who want some seclusion but be close enough to walk to a village.
Only slight complaint is that the kitchen doesn't have a lot of worksurfaces which makes cooking for a lot of people a bit of a challenge.
But overall this is a really lovely villa and I would highly recommend it.
Beautiful villa, garden and pool. Quiet area. Mostly 👍😀❤️, a few 🙁, for details read on.
Villa Maxima is very suitable for a larger group, we were 11 adults , perfect for us , and we had a wonderful stay there. Mostly we were VERY pleased about the house, don't forget that when you read on!
The villa is big and a bit difficult to find your way in, spacy areas and with sitting groups different places indoors as well as outdoors. Well kept garden mostly, VERY nice pool area, the water clean and fresh.
The rooms are nice, the double beds a bit narrow , and unfortunately mould in one of the 5/ 6 bathrooms. In the kitchen you find what you need , but it is quite small when 11 people want to take their share of the kitchen duties or want to prepare their breakfast to bring out in the garden. The sink got clogged many times, and we had to repair it.
Be prepared not to flush paper down the toilets, but this goes for most of Portugal.
There are shelves full of books ( a library actually) many about art, art lovers own this house , pictures on the walls and art in the garden.
We decided on not renting cars, we walked to the nearby areas ( Praia Grande, Praia Maças, Azenhas, Colares) , took the tram / bus to Sintra and the train from Sintra Lisbon. 15 minutes walk to nearest shop, very nice morning exercise. The twin brothers in the shop are very helpful.
What we really would have liked was a book/ folder with useful information ; ( transport/ time tables/ taxi number, shops/ mercado( where to find them/ opening hours), recommended restaurants ( like Central in Colares and Buzio in Maças), a bit of history / anecdotes, what to see f.ex. in Sintra, where to deliver tha garbage, house rules/what to do/ remember before leaving the house.)
We think you will enjoy renting this villa, as we did.
Large house, friendly & helpful landlords
Large pool, kitchen equipped with everything needed to cook for 15 people and more
Sintra, Unesco World Heritage, is a charming little town at the foot of the Serra de Sintra that refuses to be recognized as a city. Every year, Sintra welcomes thousands of visitors from all around the world, who seek for a wide range of activities to foment their health, interests and knowledge, being Sintra one of the most culturally and historically rich and attractive villages in the world. Others simply want to enjoy its natural beauty and surroundings.
It is located in the west side of Lisbon and presents us with amazing beaches that leave us stunned and one of the most suggestive ridges of Portugal. The villa itself is dotted with delightful parks and fountains and an inter flow of wacky palaces, museums and markets. We can easily understand, by strolling out Sintra´s narrow streets while glimpsing its mystical secrets, the reason why nobility and English writers choose to live here.
Heading out of “the paradise on earth” as Lord Byron said, you may visit the quirky Pena Palace. An ephemerid is that since the royal family habited the palace on the 19th Century, the palace remains almost equal.
By visiting the National Palace you will have the opportunity to relish with the peculiar conical chimneys and the historical tiles (in portuguese “azulejos), and surrounding woods. Visiting the collections of metals, paintings and textiles from the period between 15th and 19th centuries will improve largely your acquirements.
One of the ex-libris of Sintra are the impressive gardens. In the 19th century, D. Fernando has planted a unique garden in the world for the exotic and diverse flora that compose it. To help in this task, he had the collaboration of the Australian biologist Friedrich Welwitsch one of the greatest botanists of the time.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge described Sintra as a “Garden of Eden on the edge of a silver sea”.
There is a tram that starts on this little town and runs through the surrounding space, ending in “Praia das Maças”. You may also visit Cabo da Roca, the most westerly spot of Europe’s mainland.
On spare time, you have plenty options. If you prefer family activities, you can choose hiking, biking, vehicles 4x4 all-terrain, paragliding, climbing or even horseback riding and meet the little town with a different perspective.
On the other hand, if you´d rather stay by the sea, you can body board, surf, windsurf, and many others.
In the end of the day you can delight yourself with the Portuguese gastronomy with tasty meat such as Piglet, veal or goatling. There is an enormous variety of fish and shellfish like cod, clams, mussels, squid, chub and great limpet, all cooked in the Portuguese traditional way. Do not forget to taste the delicious wine.
Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, a romantic and cultural city, known for its amazing light, is located over seven hills and bathed by the Tagus River. Its history goes back before Roman colonization and you can still find traces of the different civilizations and cultures that graced this land.
The picturesque and medieval streets of Alfama, Bairro Alto and Chiado, where one can hear the Fado at night, a unique synthesis of old and new, is a must. Splendid monuments, castles and astonishing sights “miradouros” keep you company every step of the way.
There is a large range of activities to do and places to see in Lisbon, like the Oceanario, Europe’s biggest aquarium, alone worth the visit for its perfect picture of ocean wild life. This city also offers an abundance of distinguished restaurants, fantastic shopping and great nightlife.
To the west of the city lies mysterious Sintra, a verdant cultural landscape - declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site with its mystical forests crowned with castles, palaces and grand mansions.
Sintra, due to the mild climate that allows the sport 12 months a year, as well as the beautiful surroundings, is known as one of the best places for the golf lovers. Offers a large challenging course concentration, projected by famous designers and includes all degrees of difficulty up to the highest international standard.
Taking a ride on a horse-pulled carriage and gazing at the marvellous manor-houses, as one drives up to Pena Palace, is the perfect experience that epitomises this magical place. It has a vast and endless variety of exotic trees, subtropical plants and shrubs that were imported in the 19th Century, offering, in addition, spectacular views across the coast line.
Sunny Cascais, a chic seaside resort is also located a mere 15 km west of Lisbon. This lively town boasts a number of sandy beaches, excellent restaurants and championship golf courses, as well as a world-class marina.
Near Cascais is the famous beach Guincho, known for its high waves that attract windsurfers from all around the world.
The next town to the east of Cascais is the resort town of Estoril with its popular Casino and great nightlife.
