Why Jonathan Reeves chose Ilfracombe

The Fernery, Devon- Holidays for a lifetime!

'The Fernery’- A spacious and contemporary, architect designed, 4 bed eco home in North Devon. We have been visiting this part of North Devon and fondly remember family holidays there from a young age. Its a truly magical part of the world, and offers the Uk's best beaches and wonders of Exmoor on the doorstep.

We love Woolacombe for its long stretches of sandy beaches(voted the UK's best beach and in the top 10 beaches in the world!) Croyde is a cool and hip place to vista and enjoy the trendy pubs and cafes and amazing surfing culture. Ilfracombe is a vibrant and stunning victorian harbour town with some great restaurants and pubs, and theres always lots of festival and events to enjoy.

On days when you don't fancy the beach, you can enjoy the wonderful tranquility of the gardens of The Fernery. Slide open the doors, step onto the terrace and enjoy the birdsong of the surrounding valley. Its truly mesmerising, and you might find it hard to leave! The Tarka trail and Slade reservoirs are beautiful and just a few minutes walk from the house.

If you are feeling more energetic, explore the best of Exmoor with its incredible walks, the South West Coast path, and wonderful places to visit. Our favourite walks are Heddons mouth from the amazing Hunters Inn pub, Watersmeet, from the national trust centre, and Bull Point from Morthoe.

The Fernery is perfect for cyclists who can enjoy some great rides from the house, and store their bikes safely in the garage. North devon is a surfers paradise with a wide range of beach breaks to enjoy at all times.

The best thing about The Fernery is the feeling of space, light and air. Its the perfect place for families and large groups to enjoy the indoor/ outside lifestyle.

Put simply, it's truly a dream holiday home, and we love it, We are sure you will too and agree.

The Fernery, Devon- Holidays for a lifetime!

What makes this house unique

We love the spacious open plan Kitchen/ Dining Living with opening onto raised terrace overlooking the beautiful lush Slade valley within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Fernery is true architectural eco design and is very warm and cosy with underfloor heating, a wood burning stove, solar panels and sunny south facing orientation.

It is wonderfully peaceful and away from the crowds, yet so conveniently located for the some of the UK's best local beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde Saunton, Lee and Ilfracombe, and sightseeing across Exmoor. Sometimes on sunny days we love just chilling at home, and enjoying the gardens and hot tub. Then towards the end of the day when the beaches are quitter we go down to Woolacombe or Ilfracombe to enjoy the sunset and some amazing food and drinks by the beach

There is a large garden on several levels with great views and private decking area to the rear. Here the private hot tub offer the perfect place to truly relax. After all that what holidays are all about!

The perfect family getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in The Fernery over New Years for four nights. We were three families with four children between us.

The standard of the house is exceptionally high and the style and decor of the house is very tasteful and stylish. Beds are extremely comfortable and bedding was of excellent quality and plentiful. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking equipment and utensils, and we were delighted with our welcome gift from the owners which was a lovely surprise.

The hot tub is very high quality and easy and an extra luxurious feel to our stay.

Communication and transactions are prompt and efficient with the owner which makes life so much easier when booking.

We have no negative comments to add, the house was perfect for our needs and hope to return in the future!

Great property great location

  • 5 of 5

The house lived up to expectations. The facilities were just fantastic. We travelled with family and my young daughter 21 months and the toys, dvds and games provided were just great. The location was perfect for us. You could walk to local town even though we didn’t and Ilfracombe had lots of lovely places to eat and drink. The check in and out were smooth and we were very happy with the property! Only let down was the weather so the outside space wasn’t utilised.

Ruby wedding

  • 5 of 5

My family joined my husband and I for our ruby wedding stay in your

lovely property. It was everything we hoped it would be. The house is stunning and being able to open the bi- folding doors in the lovely weather was wonderful. It is well equipped with everything anyone could need. It would have been nice to have had a permanent BBQ but we managed. I can’t imagine anyone having anything to complain about. My daughters enjoyed the hot tub too. Thank you, we had a great time and made lots of wonderful memories.

Owner's Response: Hi Jane, Thanks for taking the time to do a nice review which we really appreciate, and we are glad your family had a lovely time. We previously tried supplying a BBQ, but unfortunately som guests did not look after it so we decide not to offer this at this stage but I understand it would be nice. We hope to host you family and friends again someday Jonathan

Impressive, wow factor very comfortable !

  • 5 of 5

As a group of friends we stayed at the Ferney. We had viewed the property on the website and upon arriving It didn't disappoint and the WOW factor was met!

Jonathan and his family provide a home from home, attention to detail in the decor and every thing you could possibly need.

It's a perfect home with plenty of space for couples away for a weekend.

We had a fantastic weekend and would highly recommend this property and the use of the hot tub!!! Especially after the long walks in the surrounding area.

Thanks again Jonathan for all your help and advice during the booking process.

We took your recommendation on a local restaurant of the Quay and it again didn't disappoint.

I would say to anyone though going out of season book a restaurant in advance. As many are small so get booked up quickly and some close for the winter season, so there wasn't much to choose from - so plan in advance!

Impressive, Immaculate and absolutely stunning!!!

  • 5 of 5

We chose The Fernery as our accommodation for our wedding party.

First Impressions from pulling up onto the drive was WOW! The building, landscaping and the surrounding area were stunning.

Stepping inside the WOW factor continued, the attention to detail and decor was excellent and the small touches like scones & coffee made it feel homely and inviting.

We had a fantastic week here and would highly recommend getting the hot tub!!

We look forward to staying again sometime in the future.

North Devon is a hidden gem in the South West of England. It is probably best known for its great surfing beaches, and a lot of the tourism around here is geared towards surfers, walkers and family holidays. The Fernery is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB) with in the sweeping lush valley of the Cairn Nature Reserve between Ilfracombe and Lee Bay.

The world class beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton and Putsborough are all within 10-15 minutes drive although there is a lot more to do if surfing isn't your thing. The coastal path is beautiful and Exmoor is within 10 minutes walk, so there are tons of great walks with beautiful scenery. The nearby Tarka trail is a long cycle route that follows much of the coastal path, and is very popular with families who can be found cycling with kids on pull-alongs, trailers, tandem bikes etc, and is directly opposite.

The Southwest coast path follows the coast behind the house, and can accessed within 10 minutes walk. If you have children there are quite a few days out that are great for kids, and we can suggest a whole variety of activities that will keep you going. Have a look online for the Big Sheep, the Milky Way, Watermouth Castle, Lynton Cliff Railway, Rosemoor, and Arlington Court (NT). If you fancied travelling further afield, you can also access south Devon and North Cornwall easily within a few hours, so a shopping trip to Exeter is easily within reach.
