Keith and Lesley Stevenson are the proud owners of Tawny Cottage. We live locally which means we can be on hand should we be required. We have enjoyed renovating the Cottage to a very high standard. We think the quiet location of the Cottage will please holidaymakers and having Shipley Country Park just outside the front door offering 700 acres of varied landscape and 20 miles of footpaths we hope will delight our visitors.
Lesley Stevenson purchased this cottage in 2013
Tawny Cottage is over 100 years old and is one of only 12 houses in Shipley Village. We fell in love with the village many years ago whilst walking in the Park. We were lucky enough to purchase the Cottage in November 2013 and have enjoyed carrying out the renovation.
The Cottage had stood empty for over 5 years when we purchased it. One room was querky, it could only be entered by walking out of the back door, crossing the yard and entering through a second back door. The room had been a workshop for over 70 years. The room is now part of the Kitchen.
Shipley is close to the World Heritage sites at Belper, and the Derwent Valley. Carsington Water is a short drive away, for sailing and water sports . Chatsworth, the medieval Haddon Hall, and Eyam, the plague village, can all be visited whilst staying at Tawny Cottage. Buxton renowned for its Opera House and Pavilion Gardens is a short drive away. You are also at the gateway to the dales, and the Peak District National Park, the perfect place to enjoy long walks, leisurely bike rides or horse riding in the quiet Derbyshire countryside
We all loved this house. It was very beautifully renovated and has everything here we needed - from the eldest to youngest. We were having a family birthday weekend 70 years to 2 years. It is also in a lovely position, great walks and easy access to lovely places.
Very well presented comfortable house, friendly and helpful hosts. Great location, quiet ideal for country walks and family gatherings. Would recommend without hesitation.
New Year celebrations with family and friends, we had a wonderful time, there was plenty of room for the children to play and adults to relax! Great out door activities on the doorstep, a great time was had by all! Lesley and Keith were very welcoming and explained all the facilities on our arrival, thank you for the Fizz, happy new year. I can certainly recommend this property. Goodwin and Leese families.
We arrived in a bit of a rush as there were a few parties arriving separately but Lesley and her husband were very good and easy going about it.
The house was immaculate and all the little things you would need were ready and waiting. I will never underestimate the importance of tin foil and all of those things were avaliable!
The beds were comfy and warm and the house was beautiful.
I would recommend this property to anyone (just don't do what we did and neglect to look in the draws for the oven gloves and have to ask, you may seem a bit silly).
Many thanks Lesley!

Property has been wonderfully restored to an excellent, contemporary-styled standard, one en-suite, one shared bathroom serving three doubles and one twin (bunks) rooms. Very large kitchen and dining area, excellent for the social aspect of our sort of getaway. Friendly and helpful hosts made the experience even better - a full tour/explanation of all aspects (heating/water controls, etc.) on day one, then left us to it, at the end of the phone if we were ever to need assistance. Competitively priced stay, would be more than happy to recommend to others.
A delightful week at Tawny Cottage, situated on the edge of Shipley Country Park. The accommodation was as outlined on the website, with the pictures reflecting what was available very accurately. A homely, comfy cottage, with all you could want, but, perhaps the addition of a washing machine would be good, especially for those holidaying in the wetter weather, and muddy clothes are not best lying around.
Keith was extremely helpful, taking in our food delivery, which came early, and even putting chilled items in the fridge and the ice cream in the freezer. He even noticed that they had substituted strawberries for rhubarb, and sensed my disappointment, as I had planned to make a crumble. The following day rhubarb had been left on our doorstep - thank you Keith.
The area is absolutely wonderful as a base, and the cottage provides a warm, comfortable home at the end of a long day walking and visiting places of interest.
Thank you Keith and Lesley.
A lovely cottage tucked away next to Shipley country park. Beautifully appointed with plenty of room for our family gathering. Lesley and Keith were very welcoming and helpful. We will definitely be back-thank you for a great weekend!
Tawny Cottage is one of twelve homes which form the small village of Shipley . We are proud of our pretty recently reinstalled Village Green. Weleda have their gardens within the village which produce herbal plants for their world famous health products. Michael House School is situated within the village and is a Steiner Waldorf School. The village hall is well equiped, and is available for meetings, keep fit and also to hire for parties etc.
