About Lesley Stevenson

Keith and Lesley Stevenson are the proud owners of Tawny Cottage. We live locally which means we can be on hand should we be required. We have enjoyed renovating the Cottage to a very high standard. We think the quiet location of the Cottage will please holidaymakers and having Shipley Country Park just outside the front door offering 700 acres of varied landscape and 20 miles of footpaths we hope will delight our visitors.

Lesley Stevenson purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Lesley Stevenson chose Derbyshire

Tawny Cottage is over 100 years old and is one of only 12 houses in Shipley Village. We fell in love with the village many years ago whilst walking in the Park. We were lucky enough to purchase the Cottage in November 2013 and have enjoyed carrying out the renovation.

What makes this cottage unique

The Cottage had stood empty for over 5 years when we purchased it. One room was querky, it could only be entered by walking out of the back door, crossing the yard and entering through a second back door. The room had been a workshop for over 70 years. The room is now part of the Kitchen.

Shipley is close to the World Heritage sites at Belper, and the Derwent Valley. Carsington Water is a short drive away, for sailing and water sports . Chatsworth, the medieval Haddon Hall, and Eyam, the plague village, can all be visited whilst staying at Tawny Cottage. Buxton renowned for its Opera House and Pavilion Gardens is a short drive away. You are also at the gateway to the dales, and the Peak District National Park, the perfect place to enjoy long walks, leisurely bike rides or horse riding in the quiet Derbyshire countryside

Guestbook comments from the owner

We all loved this house. It was very beautifully renovated and has everything here we needed - from the eldest to youngest. We were having a family birthday weekend 70 years to 2 years. It is also in a lovely position, great walks and easy access to lovely places.

All it says on the tin and more!

A delightful week at Tawny Cottage, situated on the edge of Shipley Country Park. The accommodation was as outlined on the website, with the pictures reflecting what was available very accurately. A homely, comfy cottage, with all you could want, but, perhaps the addition of a washing machine would be good, especially for those holidaying in the wetter weather, and muddy clothes are not best lying around.

Keith was extremely helpful, taking in our food delivery, which came early, and even putting chilled items in the fridge and the ice cream in the freezer. He even noticed that they had substituted strawberries for rhubarb, and sensed my disappointment, as I had planned to make a crumble. The following day rhubarb had been left on our doorstep - thank you Keith.

The area is absolutely wonderful as a base, and the cottage provides a warm, comfortable home at the end of a long day walking and visiting places of interest.

Thank you Keith and Lesley.

Perfect !

  • 5 of 5

An outstanding cottage in a hidden quiet hamlet surrounded by countryside. We were looking for a high quality, beautifully finished cottage where we could get away from it all and spend some quality family time together - and we found it ! We were a party of 8 ranging from 11 to 80 years old, celebrating an 80th and a 50th Birthday and we had a wonderful time. Tawny cottage is very impressive and is even better than it looks in the photo's ; immaculate, spacious and fabulous furnishings in keeping with the style of the period. The cottage was equipped with all our needs for lovely family meals, relaxing in the courtyard and games around the table and in the garden. We went on some lovely walks and bike rides in the neighbouring Shipley Country Park and had an enjoyable Sunday lunch at the near golf club. Lesley and Keith (the owners) gave us a lovely welcome (with homemade cupcakes and cards for the birthday ladies) and were very helpful and attentive when needed throughout our stay. We would definitely recommend this cottage to friends and family and will hopefully be visiting again next year.

Beautifully Restored Cottage Near the Peak District

  • 5 of 5

My parents, my husband and I, and three young children had a fantastic stay at Tawny Cottage. The Cottage is gorgeous inside, immaculately clean, and finished to a high standard. The beds were incredibly comfortable and we all slept like babies. We were provided absolutely everything we could need from games to books to extra blankets. The kitchen facilities are awesome and had everything we needed to make nearly all of our meals at the cottage. On top of all that, Keith was a wealth of knowledge on what to do locally and where to eat. We had an amazing drive through the Peak District per his detailed suggestions and it was just the ticket. The Cottage is also situated in a truly beautiful place. Shipley Park is peaceful and lush and we enjoyed walking and playing through the grounds. I highly recommend this beautiful gem-of-a-cottage for a jumping off point for any adventures in the area. We had a relaxing and comfortable stay with generous and kind hosts.

Stunning cottage, wonderful owners

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a long weekend (three couples with three young children) and we all wished we could have stayed for longer. The cottage has been refurbished to a very high and cosy standard; it is in a beautiful and convenient location; and, the owners, Keith and Lesley, are wonderful, friendly and very helpful.

We would definitely stay here again and I highly recommend this place for a relaxing stay. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your gorgeous cottage!

Many thanks
