The pretty village of Skala is set above a very long golden beach on the southernmost tip of Kefalonia. Skala’s Blue Flag beach has 3 kms of sand and shingle backed by a small wood of pine trees. There are cafes and snack bars alongside the beach and a water sports centre offering an array of water sports and fun rides. Sunbeds and sun umbrellas are also available for hire. If you prefer more seclusion, quieter areas can be found by walking along the shoreline. At the southern end of the beach there are rocks which are great for snorkeling and caves to explore with secluded sandy coves. A water taxi operates between Skala, Poros and Katelios and there are daily cruises to to local beaches, to Fiscardo and over to the neighbouring island of Ithaca. Skala has plenty of bars, tavernas and restaurants. There is a good selection of supermarkets and souvenir shops with a couple of bakeries. There is a pharmacy and 24-hour medical centre with English speaking doctors and an ATM machine. Local offices offer car hire, scooter hire and excursions. Some relics remain from the 3rd century AD with the mosaics from a Roman villa close to the centre of Skala and a 7th century BC site is still being excavated with its remains of a temple to Apollo which can be found along the Skala road to Poros.
Katelios is a sleepy coastal village with sandy beach and small fishing harbour. Katelios is famous for its fresh fish tavernas that line the waterfront. There are several (low-key) bars, a couple of supermarkets and an exchange/car rental office. The beach rarely becomes busy, with the largest number of visitors being the loggerhead turtles who favour the soft sand for making a nest!
Mounda (Kaminia Beach) is set between Skala and Katelios. This uncommercialised beach is very sandy and has shallow water which is great for children. There are a couple of beachside cafes and you can hire sunbeds on the beach. Famous for its nesting turtles Caretta-Caretta, you will find information about their nesting periods by the beach.
Poros:Poros is not known as a sophisticated resort, the pace is slow with a traditional Greek 'feel'. Poros is a good place for walking and hiking. You can hike to the oldest monastery on Kefalonia. Walk for about 3 km along the beach in a north-west direction, then follow the path up into the mountain of Atros. The path ends at the monastery of the Virgin Mary, at the top of a 500 metre high hill. Views from here are absolutely stunning.
Koroni is a very quiet sandy beach. Famous for its sand and therapeutic clay (you can mix up your own mud pack) which can be found below the rocks to the far side of the beach. One of the best ways to visit Koroni beach is to hire your own motor boat (no license required) from Katelios.
