About Margaret Ellis
Cascina San Martino is owned by Maggie, a Scottish lady that lives in Italy since 1972. The property is managed with the help of Diego Angeli, who is experienced in managing selected quality properties at the Lake Garda area.
Margaret Ellis purchased this Villa in 1985
Why Margaret Ellis chose Desenzano del Garda
Maggie and her husband bought Casale San Martino in 1985, because of its uniqueness, size and location. They restored and improved it with love and dedication, combining British taste with the traditions of the property historical origins.

Large spacious villa with pool, in a rural location but convenient to the motorway and Lake Garda
The villa is a beautiful old farmhouse located in the area of an historic battlefield near the village of San Martino, just south of Lake Garda. The property description is accurate. The villa itself has 5 large bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and was ideal for our party of 2 families (4 adults and 6 children), having plenty of room for us all. Unfortunately the bedrooms do not have air conditioning and although 4 of the rooms had fans they were rather warm at night.
It has a large kitchen well equipped with pots and pans, crockery etc and all the usual appliances. There is a huge dining room. Outside the villa is set in spacious gardens and has a large pool with diving board which was a great size and depth. There is a lovely seating area outside under a pergola with a vine growing over it.
Lovely Charlie the cat who belongs to the owner stays if the guests are happy for him to and we loved him.
The villa is managed by Diego who was extremely helpful during our stay. He gave us lots of good advice about the area and when we had a problem getting Sky TV to work he came out straight away to try and sort it. As it couldn't be sorted during our stay he found a solution so that the children could watch films in the evening.
Although the villa is rural it is less than 5 minutes drive from the motorway so has good links for travelling to Venice or Verona. Verona is about 30 minute drive away and Venice about 1.5 hours away although we went by train from Desezano del Garda railway station. Lake Garda itself and the resorts of Sirmione and Desanzano del Garda are a short drive away and all worth a visit. There is a large supermarket about 10 minutes drive away.
The villa is surrounded by vineyards and there is a very good Winery right next door where wine tasting can be carried out and some very good local wine purchased. There are several other Winerys in the area.
Within walking distance of the villa there are 3 local restaurants, one at the end of the drive which was very typically Italian which we visited and one a short walk up the road near the San Martino Tower ( a memorial tower for the battlefield) which was excellent.
The San Martino Tower is also definitely worth a visit and there is a great view of the lake from the top.
So to summarise, this is a great villa in a beautiful location, with great road links to local towns and Lake Garda and especially ideal for a large group or several families. Would definitely recommend it to friends.
Thank you for your detailed comments on Casale San Martino; the furniture is indeed very british and classic, you can see the owner's taste in every precious piece of furniture in all the rooms; I always suggest to stay at the Villa with a car, the position is very strategic as you can very quickly reach the main road connections, at walking distance there are only some restaurants and wineries.
Anyway, the information that you reported about the ELECTRICITY PLUGS ARE NOT CORRECT: so I'll give here the correct information for incoming guests.
The electricity plugs follow the Italian standard and NOT the English one, therefore English guests should take adapters with them; the Italian plugs are the same as the German ones for low consumption devices (as phone chargers), while they are different for high consumption devices (Schuko plugs in Germany); adapters to connect Schuko plugs are available at the Villa, so German guests don't need to take any adapter with them. Of course the electricity voltage is 220Volts and 50Hertz, as standard in Europe.
Stayed there for 10 days, altogether 4 german adults and 2 Kiddies, so we had a lot of space for us.
The house is huge, 5 bedrooms etc. , 2 living rooms and a big, very well equiped kitchen that turned into the living room for us. The owner of the house is a very nice scottish lady, who collected a bunch of Art and China.
So, when you arrive here, you dive into a private zone with a lot of personal things, but, from our point of view, set up very tasteful.
The outside area is very big, holding a lot of Olive-and other trees, a big pool and a little fishpond.
A Gardenhouse close to the pool with showers and a dressing room as well.
For the kids it was nice, they could run around there all day without getting lost. Also we turned the garden area into a little golfcourse, maybe you will find some of the lost balls one day :-)
From here you can reach the lake within minutes, also Verona and Brescia in a short time. Venice is about one hour away.
The only neighbor is a very good Winegrower (Citari), where you should go and taste a glass of Lugana for sure! Also visit the Tower of St. Martino della Battaglia t have the best view over the entire area.
From here you will recognize that the house is entirely surrounded by grapes! Also the Osteria della Torre is very recommendable! Golf course 5 Minutes by car, and if you have any questions...
Diego, the manager, will help you for sure!
