Overview

About the property

Traditional cottage in Avoch on the Moray Firth

Avoch is located on the Black Isle, approximately 20 minutes North East of Inverness on the Inner Moray Firth. Number 8 – Avoch is situated in the old Fisher town where the close packed streets are a reminder of the days when the fishing boats were hauled into the street to protect them during bad weather. A very short walk from Number 8 – Avoch takes you into the village centre where you can find a convenience store, cash point, hairdresser, post office & general store (selling your post cards, logs and warm socks etc). If you don’t feel like cooking at home the village boasts an Indian, Chinese and Fish & chip take away. The village is on the regular bus route to Inverness.

Turning left from Number 8-Avoch takes you to the picturesque shore front where you can visit the harbour, book your dolphin watch boat trip, or enjoy a sundowner on the sea wall whilst watching the sun set. A walk or cycle along the old railway line to Fortrose provides an opportunity for some fresh air, spotting the views, visiting the Brahan Seer stone and occasional berry picking. On your arrival in Fortrose you can quench your thirst, or enjoy a nice lunch before a walk around the Cathedral and Harbour. Chanonry Point is a recognised view point where you can spend a few hours watching the dolphins. Just a few miles further along you come to the village of Rosemarkie, sporting an amazing sandy beach where you may be lucky to find a fossil or two. The long sandy beach is ideal for stretching your legs or rock pooling. If you just want to enjoy the view and an ice cream or coffee the Beach Café will oblige.

Learnie Red Rock, around a 10 minute drive from Number 8-Avoch, offers graded mountain bike tracks, dirt bike jumping and walks. Visit their website for information of bike rentals. Not far away is Fairy Glen where you can walk alongside the waterfalls – you may be lucky enough to spot a Red Kite, squirrels or deer. Both Cromarty and Fortrose offer active Sailing Clubs where you can try your hand at dinghy or keel boat sailing. Golf, links bowling and tennis are also available with easy reach of Number 8 –Avoch.

Cromarty offers great walks and during summer months you can catch the car ferry across to Nigg and venture further north to visit Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain. Cromarty has very popular venues for meeting friends, enjoying a meal or a coffee and admiring the art and handcrafts.

Leaving Avoch and heading back towards Inverness gives you access via the A9 to the wider Highland tourist sites such as Loch Ness, Skye, Nairn, and the North.

Cracking cottage in a lovely location

  • 5 of 5

This is a very pretty traditional cottage in a quiet street - the street is so narrow that you'll need to park down by the shore! Inside, it's a lot bigger than we expected, we never used the dining room as the kitchen is comfortably big enough for 3. There are nice touches such as a washing machine for longer stays.

Avoch itself doesn't have a lot of facilities, but you're very close to Fortrose and Rosemarkie, and Cromarty is only a short drive. If you haven't been to Cromarty then you have to visit :) There's an hourly bus service as well.

The Black is a beautiful place to explore, and then further afield you have the likes of Dornoch and Dunrobin castle, or Inverness and Brodie Castle to the South.

Perfect place close to Inverness

  • 5 of 5

Was a lovely place. Got a phonecall a few days before our stay, just to check up and we had all the information we needed, that was a nice move i think. It was clean, got 2 bathrooms, lovely beds slept like a dream. Avoch is a nice little village, friendly people and neighbourgs. Take away near by, also a supermarked just up the street. Nice kitchen if want to cook yourself, or you can visit the hotel near by who makes really good food. Everything you need really. We were very happy for our stay and would defently come back if we get the chance.

A good cottagr

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was great. The beds were really comfy. The cottage had everything we needed. However, we had a elderly relative some handrails between kitchen and sitting room and in the bathroom would be good. Also bins in most rooms would be helpful as would a clock in the sitting room.

Thank you for a lovely holiday

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this house before and love it. The location is ideal, near to shops and take aways, only a short drive into Inverness or Digwall central for everything. The house is a lovely size, feels like home from home, the neighbours are very friendly, we would highly recommend this property and look forward to returning sometime in the near future.

Great location, nice cottage

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable and well-equipped, a friendly place with everything you need for a nice holiday (also with low door frames, make sure to duck your head), this is a nice cottage in a perfect location, the sea and the local store are both literally around the corner. The village is quiet and friendly, ideally located for trips around the area - even the west coast is not out of reach. We had a very nice week here. Recommended!

Plus: Gael Holiday Homes really made an effort to make sure we were all right, calling us up before we travelled and the day after we arrived, responding quickly to a question we hadn't even explicitly asked, just mentioned as an aside. Also recommended!
