Stunning 1 bed cottage in Yorkshire Dales village bordering The Lakes District.
My name is Gill Abram and I am originally from Bolton. I moved to Cumbria over 10 years ago to work in Kendal. I often visited the charming and unspoilt village of Orton and never dreamt that one day we'd would be lucky enough to live here!
Owner purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Owner chose Penrith
In 2009 my partner and I took on the massive project of renovating one of the oldest properties in Orton into a family home. As our home began to emerge from the rubble and dust we struck upon the idea of turning the adjoining granny flat into a luxurious holiday cottage. We felt that Orton was ideally placed for exploring the Lakes District and Yorkshire Dales yet provided a peaceful alternative to the more commercial villages & towns of the Lakes. The local pub, well stocked village shop and chocolate shop all combine to ensure that visitors are well catered for and the numerous idyllic walks from the doorstep make it a dog owners paradise! My Labradoodle, Bramble, definitely enjoys living here!
What makes this Cottage unique
Location, location location! Not only is Cumberland Cottage a well equipped, modern and beautifully restored holiday cottage, it boasts the perfect location in the centre of the quaint and peaceful Yorkshire Dales village of Orton. Surrounding the village you will find a special landscape of immense beauty and character, yet a couple of miles down the road you will enter England's largest National Park, The Lake District, home to Scafell Pike - its highest mountain, Wastwater - its deepest lake and thriving communities like Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere.

Little gem of a hideaway
Everything spot on, including the lemon drizzle cake! Used it as a base to explore cumbria. Hosts were very sweet and helpful.
Everything you need for a short break.
Great location, close to the M6 but in a picturesque setting with friendly locals. The cottage is small but doesn't feel cramped, sympathetically converted, and equipped with everything you need for a home away from home. Owner Gill lives next door and manages to balance being helpful and on hand while still respecting her guests' privacy. I'd definitely return.
Home from home
Lovely little cottage , everything you need for a pleasant, homely stay .The village has a brill shop and friendly approachable ‘locals’ . A good base for walkers or in our case people
Looking for a chill out with places to visit within easy driving distance.

Close to the Lake District and within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Orton is just off the M6 motorway (junction 38). The cottage is ideally placed for exploring one of the most beautiful and least populated counties in the UK. Blessed with scenic mountains, lakes and rivers this is a fabulous region to visit.

A wealth of outdoor activities are on offer in Cumbria such as sailing, windsurfing, rock-climbing, mountain biking, fell walking and horse-riding. Those looking to enjoy less strenuous pursuits can explore pretty Cumbrian market towns such as Kendal, Keswick & Appleby, visit national trust properties, castles & gardens or admire the stunning scenery from aboard a Lakeland steamer.
The traditional Cumbrian village of Orton is largely undiscovered by many tourists who tend to head for the bustling tourist centres of the Lakes. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Orton a provides peaceful and relaxing base for you to enjoy your break. Orton is at the centre of a network of peaceful footpaths and bridleways which enable numerous wonderful walks of any length. The limestone scenery of Orton Scar and Great Asby Scar are close to the village while the majestic Howgills are just a few miles away. The mountain walks of the Lake District are an easy and picturesque drive away as are the Yorkshire Dales. Local amenities in Orton include a pub serving home cooked food and real ale, a well stocked shop and post office, the award winning Kennedys chocolate factory with tea room and Silver Yard cafe and gallery. On the second Saturday of every month, there is a fabulous farmers market on you doorstep which offers a vast array of crafts and local produce.
