Thank you for a delightful stay st Santa Maria, we had the most wonderful time. When we arrived, we were struck by how beautifully clean the place was. We have a toddler, and he loved running around the place - there's certainly plenty of space! The late October sunshine was such a treat, and we were able to visit the beach and take a dip in the sea. There are so many local beaches to choose from but we opted for family friendly Luz where there was easy parking. We ate lunch out every day (Portuguese food and wine is fantastic and so reasonable) but we enjoyed our breakfast in what looked like a brand new kitchen. The kitchen is huge and has large glass doors that look out into the pool area. The kitchen also has a lovely little seating area, where my husband and I would read to our little boy. My little boy slept incredibly well, and we were able to rest in the lounge or pool area while he took his afternoon nap. There's a great outdoor BBQ in the pool area, and a covered outdoor seating area which must be great in the high summer heat. We hope to return when our little one is bigger to enjoy more of what Santa Maria and the Algarve have to offer :).
We had a fantastic week and our 18 month old daughter loved it. The house is a great size, has a large outdoor area and is very well maintained. Having a cleaner come by every day is also a great help.
The villa is in a great location, only a couple of minutes to the supermarket and there are at least 3 great beaches within 10 minutes. Salema is only 5 minutes away and the beach there is perfect for small children and has some nice bars/restaurants as well.
I echo the sentiments and detail of the reviewer of June 22 2016 re the property and locality and especially the ease of dealing with the owner, Kathy - it has been a smooth and thoroughly enjoyable holiday and I would recommend wholeheartedly. A car is needed though for exploring the coastline and making the most of both worlds of peace & quiet by the pool and beaches. We used SixT who are based at the airport, and our friends used Goldcar (adjacent to the SixT office) - both seem reliable. We ate at O Tiago on the last night - short walk into Budens and it was v warm and authentic. NB need to give 24 hours notice for more traditional Portuguese dishes! Thank you, Kathy!
My now husband & I stayed at villa Santa Maria for 4 weeks in May 2016 as our base for our Portugal wedding
The location is perfect, only a few mins drive to the local villages of Salema, Burgau & Luz a bit further as well as being very close to the Parque da Floresta golf course which was an added bonus for my husband!
The local intermarche is less than 10 mins by foot and very handy indeed.
Now to the villa…………
The space in this place is amazing, 5 great sized bedrooms, 3 upstairs all with en suite and 2 more downstairs with a bathroom to share, although for the majority of the 4 weeks, it was just us and our 2 border collies we couldn’t have asked for a better place. The kitchen area which has been newly extended was a perfect space for us to cook and entertain our friends who had come out for the wedding, and the fact it goes straight out to the fabulous pool and terrace area was just perfect, as so many of the properties in Portugal tend to have the pool off bedrooms.
The kitchen was well stocked with tableware, glasses, cutlery etc so we were really able to make it a home from home during our long stay.
The pool area was amazing, a total suntrap with sunshine from 9am until it sets in the evening, and as the property is set into the hills, it is completely sheltered from the famous algarve breeze you often get!
Another great addition to the outside space is a new covered table area, which was a welcome rest area when the sun became too much for some!
A great sized living room too, but to be honest, we spent 99% of our time in the kitchen or outside having BBQs and enjoying the pool!
Nazare the cleaner was a delight to see each morning, although she speaks very little English (but much more than we speak Portuguese!!) we got along really well with her & her husband.
Kathy has been a pleasure to deal with, during the wedding planning, I changed our dates several times, and she was always more than accommodating to our requests.
It’s safe to say we had a great time, in fact we are already booked to return this September!! We have been coming to the same part of Portugal for almost 8 years now, and this is certainly one of the best places we have stayed for location, and the house itself and what it offers.
A fantastic villa for families, groups of friends or anyone who just loves to have their own pool and great space at an affordable cost!
A very spacious villa with a nicely private pool and wooded garden. The villa is set well back from the main road so although the road is busy, the noise from the road is rarely noticable.
A large and very comfortable living room plus a well equipped kitchen means that you can make the most of evenings in. The village (Budens) with its supermarket and restaurants is within easy walking distance, although walking back up the long unlit drive could be a bit tricky without a torch and take care crossing the road.
We had a really fantastic two weeks here, daily maid service also adding to make it a thouroughly restful stay.
We'll be back. Highly recommended.
My husband and I spent a wonderful week at Santa Maria. The house is very well decorated, spacious and clean. Santa Maria is nestled on a hillside, surrounded by fields and trees. It is truly secluded and we very much enjoyed the peace and privacy that the location afforded. I have travelled the Algarve, and the western tip has to be my favourite place. The majority of tourists stay in the large resorts, and the west boasts the best beaches and a more authentic Portuguese experience. We visited a different beach every day and made the most of the warm October weather. We found some very reasonably priced restaurants, but spent most evenings eating in the Villa. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the local supermarket is well stocked. I'm looking forward to visiting again, hopefully with a group of friends.
BUDENS VILLAGE is characteristically Portuguese, boasting a lovely 17th century church, & typical whitewashed houses. There are several restaurants & cafes around the hamlet, plus an incredibly well stocked supermarket. You can buy your bread, and irresistible Portuguese pastries from the supermarket, or from the old bakery shop.
SALEMA BEACH: Just 1 mile away is a typical fishing village with a great beach. It has quite a few restaurants, some very well known for their fish & seafood cuisine.
There are many beautiful and secluded beaches on this coastal strip, to choose from including Ingrina, & Zavial.
SAGRES & CAPE DE ST VINCENT: approx. 15 mins drive from the villa is an ancient maritime port, the LANDS END of EUROPE. The Lighthouse & the Old Fort are a must to see.
PARQUE DA FLORESTA GOLF COURSE in BUDENS: Is situated between the Moorish town of Lagos & the ancient maritime port of SAGRES; the heart of Portugal's unspoilt WESTERN ALGARVE. The golf course is just across from VILLA SANTA MARIA, it has spectacular views and a wonderful array of flowers plants & eucalyptus trees. (VILLA SANTA MARIA can be seen from many aspects of the course). This golf course offers a host of leisure activities; a GOLF ACADAMY, and short game practice. 3 PUTTING GREENS, TENNIS, HORSE RIDING, BOWLING, MOUNTAIN BIKING, JEEP SAFARIS etc. It also has 'Spa Floresta' - a health, fitness and beauty spa. The Clubhouse Restaurant & Bar overlooks the 18th hole. The Bowling Clubhouse, Bistro & Tennis Bar are open daily. The 'O Parque' is for evening meals with an a la carte menu & can also be booked at Reception.
LAGOS; Just 10 minutes drive from the villa, has a beautiful marina and seaside promenade, with a variety of shops, specialising in silver, pottery, copper, leather and filigree. It has a vibrant night life with plenty of restaurants & bars. Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery. Once a regular home of Henry the Navigator. At one period it was a centre of the European slave trade, slaves were brought back from the discovery voyages, & sold. The 15th century ‘Slave Market’ is situated across from St Anthony’s Church.
DOLPHIN WATCHING: Boats departs daily from the Marina: www.dizzydolphin.com
LAGOS DAILY FISH MEAT and VEG MARKET:Don't miss this!. Locals also bring their own home grown produce to sell, and you can find them by the Bus Terminal. It's a great experience, and so much choice. There is also a general Saturday market.
