About Sarah

After many years living in Marlow bringing we fell in love with the Test Valley and these barns and bought them in November 2011. We live on site in an old calving shed that we converted and built in 2013 with our 2 teenage boys, our dog Indie and our growing number of chickens.

Sarah purchased this barn in 2011

Why Sarah chose Test Valley

The Test Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty. We are surrounded by stunning scenery and the River Test famous for its fly fishing and other country pursuits. We are extremely lucky to have fantastic high quality eateries and farm shops on our doorstep and fantastic independent shops in Stockbridge, Winchester and Salisbury. The whole area is surrounded by amazing things to see and do and only being a 10 minute drive into the New Forest or 30 minutes to the sea means that we can have the best of both worlds.

What makes this barn unique

The Old Barns is a beautifully converted barn consisting of 4 one bedroom cottages. If you want to get together with some friends and family it is possible to rent all 4 cottages. We welcome well behaved dogs and it is possible to accommodate additional children in some of the cottages. The barn conversion has been carried out in a rustic style while keeping all the home comforts you would expect. The cottages are very generous for 2 people and as with man of our guests I am sure you will keep coming back. We have access onto the Test Way from the top of our driveway giving you access to miles of beautiful country walks or just a short drive away is the New Forest, the coast or the cities of Winchester or Salisbury. We are absolutely spoilt for choice with good places to eat all within 5 miles and there is a lovely local pub just 1 mile from the cottage.

Mobile and wifi are available at the property, but due to our location we do not guarantee these and some mobile providers do not get good reception here.

Charming

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing and comfortable stay at the barn. The hosts were very helpful and cheerful, the accommodation was clean and well equipped. The location was perfect within easy reach of many attractions, places to eat and food stores. Most of all we enjoyed the peace and quiet and the beautiful countryside.

Lovely accommodation in a peaceful spot

  • 5 of 5

Very well equipped, clean, tidy cottage with thoughtful touches such as fresh eggs provided. Plus little things like washing up liquid supplied - which is always a pain if it isn't as one doesn't want to buy some if only staying for a couple of nights.

Perfect location for access to all that the Test Valley has to offer and easy access to Winchester.

Made to feel very welcome by Sarah and Rob who deservedly seem to get repeat business. Followed their pub recommendations too!

Downsides, if one wants to nitpick...the nearby road can be a bit noisy at times, though it was quiet at night. A light sleeper in this cottage might be disturbed by the sound of some equipment running in the adjacent utility/store room.

Would happily return if heading that way again!

Great accommodation in a lovely location

  • 5 of 5

3 excellent nights in this beautifully appointed "Cottage". The upside-down arrangement works well to allow you to appreciate the views and to sleep downstairs which on hot days must be a blessing. We especially appreciated the fact that small items such as dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid etc. plus 6 eggs and some milk, as well as tea, coffee, sugar were provided so that you could function immediately upon arrival. Sarah and Rob clearly put a lot of thought and care into how things operate here. We followed their recommendatios for pubs to use and were not disappointed. The Test Valley is a haven of peace and tranquillity and we also enjoyed a day visiting Winchester and especially the Tower Tour at the Cathedral.

Would happily recommend this property to others.

Location

We are rather spoilt by the wonderful pubs, restaurants and farm shops in the area.

Please find below a list of just a few of them - far too many to mention:

The John O'Gaunt Inn, Horsebridge

Just over 1 mile stroll along the Test Way you will find this dog friendly pub offering home cooked simple food.

The Boot Inn, Houghton

A good 5 - 6 mile walk or a short drive you will find this lovely pub with a fantastic garden running down to the River Test. We love the food in this pub and dogs are welcome in the pub area and garden, but not the restaurant.

The Crown Inn, King's Somborne

1.4 miles by car or a beautiful walk along the Test Way to The Crown.

Good home cooked food and friendly atmosphere.

In Stockbridge high street (5 miles away) you will be spoilt for choice of where to eat:

The greyhound Inn

The Three Cups

The White Heart

Time and Tides

Woodfire Pizza

Peat Spade, Longstock

15 minutes drive you will find another beautiful pub in a stunning village. Good food and cosy atmosphere.

The Mayfly Inn, just outside Stockbridge

15 minutes drive you will find the Mayfly located on the River Test. Offers food all day, every day. Beautiful location to sit by the river.

The Royal Oak, Fritham, New Forest (30 minutes) Beautiful part of the New Forest for a walk and then enjoy a drink and a simple lunch from local produce at The Royal Oak (thatched pub).

For fantastic local produce please visit Kimbridge Farm shop or Leckford Farm Shop.

Place To Visit:

Below are just a few suggestions on places to visit, although there are far too many to mention:

Mottisfont National Trust House and Mottisfont Abbey (5 minutes)

Stunning national trust house and gardens.

Stockbrige Village - beautiful small village (10 minutes) full of independent shops, coffee shops, pubs and restaurants.

Spitfire Clay Shoot (10 minutes) fantastic purpose made clay shoot with or without lessons.

Danebury Hill Fort (12 minutes) Stunning location for a walk on an iron age hill fort.

Broadlands (10 minutes) historic home of late Earl Mountbattern of Burma.

The New Forest - (10 minutes to 40 minutes depending where you go). So many fantastic places to visit. Beaulieu motor museum, Bucklers Hard, Beaulieu river trips, Lymington, Lyndhurst, lots of good pubs, fantastic country walks and marinas, beaches and even a ferry to the Isle of Wight.

Beautiful Beaches (40 minutes) Bournemouth Beaches or Mudeford Sand Spit is a lovely sandy beach with a pleasant walk from Hengistbury Head car park.

Paultons Park (15 minutes) theme park for children including Pepper Pig world.

Here is one for the grownups! - Bombay Sapphire Gin tour and tasting. You need to book online in advance (30 minutes) Bombay Sapphire moved near Overton in 2014 and are located in a stunning mill. The building is fantastic and the tour or workshops are well worth a visit.

Winchester (25 minutes) - beautiful City on a small scale with independent shops and eateries. The farmers market on the 2nd and last Sunday of every month is excellent selling local produce.

Salisbury (30 minutes) - another beautiful City in the neighbouring county of Wiltshire.
