Spaziosa, curata e in centro

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Ferrara is the heir of an important cultural heritage of the Renaissance, a time when it was the capital of an independent duchy under the rule of the Este family, and had developed into an artistic and academic center of Europe, where they lived personalities like poets Ludovico Ariosto and Torquato Tasso, scientists Nicolaus Copernicus and Paracelsus, the Andrea Mantegna and Titian artists, writers Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Pietro Bembo.

It is also a city of great urbanistic interest as during the Renaissance there the first great urban designs of modern European history took place, the most notable of which is the Herculean Addition, commissioned in 1484 by the Duke Ercole d'Este architect Biagio Rossetti. The new part of town is called Arianuova, both for its location outside the old axis of the medieval castle, and because it connoted to the end of the nineteenth century by large green areas with no buildings, called "orchards and gardens", the new internal mighty rossettiane walls. Through this architectural Ferrara it is considered by scholars to the first modern city in Europe.

UNESCO gives it the title of World Heritage for the first time in 1995 as the city of the Renaissance and later, in 1999, received further recognition for the Po Delta and the Este delights. Ferrara is also one of the four provincial capitals (along with Bergamo, Lucca and Grosseto), whose old town is almost completely surrounded by walls which, in turn, have maintained intact their original appearance over the centuries. Ferrara, Pisa and Ravenna, is also one of the first cities in the aforementioned silence in Laudi of Gabriele D'Annunzio.

Ferrara's oldest university (University of Ferrara) and archbishopric Studies (Archdiocese of Ferrara-Comacchio). Hosts important cultural centers: the National Art Gallery of Palazzo dei Diamanti, the National Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Risorgimento and the Resistance, the museum of modern art and contemporary Filippo de Pisis, the museum of the Cathedral, the museum Giovanni Boldini, the museum Italian Judaism and the Shoah and many other museums.
