Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Fethiye - Beatrix Cottage

1 bedroom/lounge with double bed. Folding single bed available. Kitchen. Shower

'Brides' magazine described Beatrix Cottage as one of the [12] most romantic in the world.

It is set on a rocky hillside overlooking the beautiful Kaya Valley, near Fethiye.

The ghost town of Kaya is a mile away. That town is the venue for the drama in Louis de Bernieres' masterpiece 'Birds without wings'. The cottage is recommended in The Sunday Times and The Telegraph.

The cottage is totally private, is entirely detached from its neighbours, and the ideal resting place for stressed out professionals. [Or honeymooners].

There are local beaches, simple restaurants and basic supplies in the nearby village. There is no disco or 'Red Lion'.

There are two swimming pools within walking distance. Fethiye town is a short drive away and there are beaches which can be reached by public transport, just 6 km from the cottage. The village is steeped in history and your hosts are a mine of information.

Your Hosts: John and Bea enjoy their guests

The first night welcome meal, served on one of the cottage terraces will be a feast to remember.

Probably on the next day John will suggest a tour of the valley in his ancient Land Rover or whatever else is running, guiding guests to the village shop, the simple restaurants and the two public pools in the valley.

Bea is a superb cook and will prepare meals on request, not cheap but probably 'the best we have had in Turkey' to quote many previous guests.

John has prepared the only available maps of the area, he has been a professional walk leader and a very experienced sailor. [See facilities].

Please note that the changeover day is flexible but Monday is preferred.

Facilities: Mountain bikes are available.

Several boats may be available.

A paddle-pool is available for kids.

New 2013 A tricycle [adult]

To the Hills: After some 20 years living in the valley, John and Bea probably know more than anyone about the walking in the adjacent hills, the location of ancient ruins and other sites of interest. Bea knows her birds and bees and John knows the trails.

About John Laughland

Beatrix is German but now also Turkish. She speaks perfect English and good Turkish. She was a teacher in Berlin.

John was a Civil Engineer. Is now a writer. He sailed to Turkey single-handed. They have cats and dogs but buried their donkey Mabel two years ago.

John Laughland purchased this cottage in 1990

Why John Laughland chose Turkey

We restored the cottage from a ruin and lived in it ourselves for several year. We think the homeliness is built into the walls.

What makes this cottage unique

The ruin originally cost us no more than a long weekend in Barcelona! Views were great too.

Pure Nature - Like Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Unconventionally, cosy, natural, lovely, calm and easy are the best words for Bea&John's lovely cottage. It's the best place to give your soul a rest and to calm down after stressful times. Aside from ordinary tourism, Bea & John live in another, in a peaceful world. This wonderful valley of Kayaköy offers a lot of surprises. It is more than recommended to spend holidays there!

Beautiful and romantic cottage

  • 5 of 5

Beatrix Cottage is a beautiful and very comfortable cottage with a choice of two terraces built into the hillside and surrounded by trees and shrubs. It is detached and private but the owners, John and Bea, live a short walk away on the adjacent property and they are both friendly and highly informative about the area, its history, things to see and do and recommendations about the restaurants and beaches and just about anything else you might be interested in. If you're up for it they also provide a tour of the village which was a great way to get an overall sense of the place. The cottage is so wonderfully relaxing you will find it hard to tear yourself away. But when you do there is much to explore. Walking or driving down the gentle hill to the village you go past fruit and vegetable stalls with delicious and cheap produce fresh from the fields. There are local shops with all of the basics and a really good bakery. A variety of restaurants cater for a range of tastes and all the ones we visited were extremely friendly and we had some great meals. The local beaches are stunning. We particularly enjoyed walking up through the Koya Village and over the top and down to Cold Water Bay, so called because it is naturally cooled by an underwater spring. There is a more adventurous walk going east from the village - around two hours - that takes you to Oludeniz Beach (the one shown in all of the Turkish brochures). Once you've climbed through the village it is just about all down hill and you can always get the bus back. We also thoroughly enjoyed a boat trip from Oludeniz (you can also go from Fethiye - lots of great shops). We chose a quiet boat with a delicious lunch but if you're in the party mood there are larger and noisier boats. Although there are aspects of this coastline that we felt were over-developed, with a bit of walking you can access the more isolated bays and some of these are a real treasure - transparent turquoise waters, sunburnt rocks and beaches and the shade of trees just a few strides from the water's edge - perfection! We have stayed in cottages and villas all over the UK and southern Europe and this was undoubtedly the best and also most reasonably priced - we will certainly be back!

Car: not necessary

Fethiye town is the ideal centre for most holidays. Unlike other centres it remained a working town. Kaya is a farming valley offering the minimum facilities for the 'average' tourist. There are excellent restaurants however. The walking is superb and the village people still maintain the hospitality for which Turkey is famous.

Local produce is available from neighbours and for more serious cooks Fethiye has the best produce market on the coast.

Great walking country. A car is recommended for a two week stay.

Please note that Dalaman is by far the nearest airport.

Der naechste Flughafen ist Dalaman.

Other Activities: Archeology, nature
