Wake in comfort to the sound of the sea, explore the misty brooding Romney Marsh, then warm up in the many atmospheric pubs with intriguing histories, resident ghouls, roaring fireplaces, cracking ales and tasty pub grub, walk along our pebbled beach, look out across the shimmering blue sea and you’ll feel like you’ve discovered another world.
Stay at Coastguard’s Lantern and discover a landscape full of myth’s and legends, surrounded by the haunting loneliness of Romney Mash. A flat, open landscape of wide skies and fields criss-crossed by a lattice of drainage ditches, where yellow waterlilies float in early summer, it offers the opportunity to wander quiet lanes and paths and to visit some of its famous medieval churches and the vast stretch of historic invasion coast.
Built in this secluded spot, to help guard against smuggling and invasion, this beautiful renovated coastguard cottage is the perfect location for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of modern life

Coastguards Lantern is a recently renovated Coastguards Cottage at Jury’s Gap, right beside the sea and not far from the village of Camber. Here you are surrounded by views in every direction – marshland designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) to one side and the sea to the other. This location is the perfect getaway with only your close neighbors for company and yet you are only a few minutes’ drive to the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye. Coastguards Lantern is within easy reach of local amenities including shops and many excellent pubs and restaurants for your holiday eating out.
Coastguards Lantern is a contemporary cottage with modern comforts within a modified traditional coastguards cottage. As soon as you step inside you’ll notice the huge amount of care and attention that has been given in the renovation from its former 1875 life as a Coastguards property to a cosy holiday cottage with log burner, comfortable lounge and modern kitchen – the perfect place for some well-earned R&R away from the monotonous grind of everyday life!
The newly equipped open plan kitchen/dining room in Coastguards Lantern has everything you’ll need to prepare lovely meals for your friends and family including a beautiful Range cooker, Nespresso Coffee Machine, breakfast bar and farm house style dining table where you can relax and enjoy home cooked locally sourced food – why not visit Rye and buy locally caught seafood fresh from the boat or some Romney marsh lamb from the local butchers? Beside The Sea Holidays will be more than happy to recommend our favourites!
You’ll love the comfortable lounge where you can cosy on down on the comfy sofas and enjoy watching the flames dance in the log burning stove that is the centre piece of this lovely space where you can enjoy the company of your friends and family, or relax and enjoy your own company with a good book!
Upstairs you’ll find a stunning modern bathroom with a hidden secret, a customised bath set high enough for you to be able to fully enjoy the views of the sea whilst you relax amongst the bubbles and wind away the stresses of everyday life with – dare we say, a glass of wine as your accompaniment… How perfect is that?
The large, comfortable master bedroom has a super king sized bed and un-spoilt views over the sheep studded marsh where the local smugglers plied their trade in years gone by.
The second bedroom has two 3ft beds. With the stunning view of the sea and a small flat screen TV with integrated dvd player, just in case you ever tire of watching the waves and sunset!
The cottage has a decked south-facing and quiet garden, the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring one of the many historical sites or taking a hike along one of the areas many a coastal path or marshland walks.
It is fair to say that Coastguards Lantern is the perfect holiday cottage to relax and unwind in and do as much or as little as you want and only the crackle of the fire and the crash of the waves to disturb you!

Well looked after and fitted out and very comfortable and clean. Clear instructions with no problems. Appreciated the little touches like fresh milk in the fridge and handmade cake and biscuits on the kitchen table. Found the Derek Jarman's Garden book in the bookshelf and went to visit it. If you want a few days to explore the unique environment that is Dungeness and its surrounds, you won't fine a better base to do it from. Had a great time..
A fabulous situation and a well equipped house. Attractively decorated, great bathroom. But some disappointments. Heating not on when we arrived late Friday, so the first evening we were miserably cold as house slowly warmed up. No wood for the wood burner - though note said there would be some. Lovely bed and bedroom, but in cold house with no hot water bottle or electric blanket, it was perishing. Thermostat must be set at an eco regulated temperature: so bath water borderline tepid.
No welcome pack at all - we had brought our own coffee, wine and milk, but next day wanted a cup of tea and not a tea bag to be found. No ordnance survey map - except on wall. Maybe people take them? But so useful. Sadly, major sea wall works and army actively shooting on the range blighted coastal walk to Dungeness and view towards sea from house.
None of this too important - but it's not a cheap cottage, so I think we expected a bit more.
We recently enjoyed a great week's stay at Lantern Coastguard's Cottage in Jury's Gap. The cottage itself is gorgeous - really comfortable beds, cosy wood-burning stove, lovely shower/bath and very well-equipped kitchen, etc. There is everything you are likely to need, including TV, DVD, XBox and board games if the weather turns bad. But in fact, the beach (just a few metres away from the cottage) is wonderful whatever the weather and we enjoyed many hours in our wellies there, even in February. Communication with the owner is great and the whole booking/arrival process stress-free. Thank you for a relaxing week (but don't tell everyone!)
