We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay at Sankofa Guest Apartment. The location was great as it only took 5 minutes to reach the subway or bus with the shops also close by. The apartment was beautifully decorated and it was so cosy when we arrived back after a full day of sight seeing, to enjoy the atmosphere. Edith and Norma are such lovely people and so helpful. We couldn't believe the gorgeous fluffy towels and slippers and dressing gowns for our use. The apartment was exceptionally clean and well maintained and we certainly enjoyed the bottle of wine and chocolates on our arrival (not to mention the sumptuous muffins!). We would certainly recommend it to family and family and have actually done so
Staying at Sankofa Guest Apartment was a wonderful experience. The apartment is stunningly beautiful and has every amenity a traveller could possibly need or desire, even a footspa. The whole apartment is incredibly attractive and it is a pleasure to simply sit and admire the artwork on the walls and the furniture and finishings within the apartment. Our hostesses, Edith and Norma are incredibly warm and helpful. We feel as if we have made friends. It has added an extra dimension to our first-time New York experience to be able to stay in Harlem and be welcomed with such kindness. Within the apartment you will find NYC guidebooks and other helpful printed information to help you take advantage of your time in New York. The apartment's location is fantastic. Catching public transport is a breeze. We favoured the bus during the day to give us a better idea of the lay of the land. The subway is quick and efficient and is only a few blocks' walk through this safe neighbourhood. We walked day and night through the neighbourhood and felt perfectly comfortable. The bed is extremely comfortable and we enjoyed being able to cook breakfast each morning. Being able to wash and dry our clothes each night also allowed us to pack a little lighter than we would otherwise have been able to do. We would never, ever stay anywhere else on our next visit to Manhattan - Sankofa has it all. Thank you Edith and Norma for our wonderful visit. You and your apartment are true gems.
We loved our stay at Sankofa and will only stay here when we visit New York. The apartment is beautifully decorated and the building is wonderfully restored. Located in a row of historic brownstones is something everyone should experience. This neighborhood was the friendliest place in NYC. Designer touches everywhere and it's even more beautiful than the photos. Edith and Norma were friendly and helpful. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable from the first communication. We love them and miss them already.
A good bed makes the stay for me and the bed was super comfortable. We awoke refreshed each day. The bed was the perfect mix of firm and soft, the best night's sleep away from home I have ever had. The pillows were a mix of firm and soft to meet everyone's needs. The sheets were soft and the bedding was perfect for the weather. With the bedroom being on the backside of the building, it was quiet enough at night to hear the crickets chirping. A rarity in NYC. There is also a wonderful garden view from the window.
The bedroom and apartment have quiet AC units that quickly cool you down when needed. The kitchen had everything we needed to eat in, cook, bake, and clean up. The living room had extremely comfortable and beautiful furniture. A TV with cable to access anything you need. Free Wifi was fast enough for streaming.
The bathroom had spa quality linens, soaps, lotions, and shampoos. Excellent water pressure in the shower making for great showers. A full size bathtub with plenty of room in the shower made for getting ready in the morning easy. The bathrobes were soft and of high quality. We loved having our own slippers to relax in.
Close to the bus, subway, grocery store, restaurants, parks, and shops made for a comfortable and convenient, yet quiet location. The best food I've ever had in NYC was in Harlem. This neighborhood is for foodies. Edith and Norma gave us great recommendations for local restaurants and venues. They also have brochures and a binder to help you with your stay.
Everything is high end and lovely. From the wooden blinds to the dishes. Details are thoughtful and elegant.
We are very experienced travellers, particularly to North America but, I can say with some confidence, that this is one of the very best apartments that we have stayed in. In terms of its facilities the photos' do not ( and perhaps) cannot do it justice. It is spacious, airy and superbly furnished with a very personal touch. All of the previous reviews are spot on. It is someone's home that is being shared with you. Our hosts, Edna and Norma, were very welcoming and helpful. Generous in terms of what they gave us, ( in terms of their time and wonderful treats given to us on our arrival). Very interesting and knowledgable too. What also attracted us to this apartment was the neighbourhood it is situated in. First of all it is very safe. Harlem is very vibrant, full of interesting places and sites to visit and all very walkable within a fifteen minute, frequent subway journey to downtown Manhattan. More importantly it is probably the last neighbourhood left in Manhatten that still has a genuinely community feel to it. A good mixture of people, excellent shops and eating places but, still with a sense of space to it and wonderful parks and buildings to explore.
Cannot recommend it highly enough. A great place and location to explore.

An amazing one bedroom apartment with everything you need and then some. It was so lovely to be able to spread out and relax after a busy day of sightseeing. The apartment is extremely well equipped right down to dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent, spray starch and a first for me is it had not only a hair dryer, but a straightening iron as well. The apartment has quality appliances and is decorated with beautiful African artefacts. Although it isn't in the busy centre of Manhattan, it is a short walk to bus stops and the subway and takes only minutes to get anywhere. If there is any drawback, it is the 49 steps from the street to your apartment door, but don't let that put you off. The hosts Edith and Norma are very warm and welcoming without being obtrusive. I give it a 10 out of 10.
Edith and Norma have created an absolutely beautiful, charming, spotlessly clean and customized space. The apartment is completely ready for visitors. Coffee, dishes, shower amenities, robes , beautiful bedding and towels.
We are very active subletters and have been all over NYC as we have two children and grandchildren who live there. If you want to be in historic Harlem, book this place. It is close to delicious restaurants, Columbia and is easily accessible to anything in NYC via cab or train. My husband ran to Central Park easily and enjoyed his runs very much. Our son lives on the upper west side and we had no problem hooking up with him on a daily basis.
They have kept their price for the apt. very reasonable and Edith and Norma made everything seamless from our very first contact. They are gracious and kind in every way.
So, give this spot a serious look. You won't be disappointed!!
Our third time with Edith and Norma was as great as the first two - only better because we now think of this wonderful apartment and the neighborhood and our hosts as our home in New York. Harlem is the last great NY neighborhood with a personal feel, beautiful streets and brownstones, wonderful restaurants, delightful people - and then ... here comes the Whole Foods to 125th and Lenox!! What next?
What can you expect at Sankofa? It's exactly as described and photographed, Edith and Norma are hosts par excellence, great to have the laundry in house, the kitchen is perfect if you want to eat in, which we often do, the grocery (Best Yet on Frederick Douglass is a typical NYC grocery before things got boutique-y) has great meat, fish, fresh veg. The subways and buses are close for travel to any part of the city.
This is the place for a stay in NY that will give you a taste of what the city was like before the oligarchs moved in! You will love it!
