Overview

About the property

Sleeps 2. 1 Bedroom. 1 Bathroom.

Mells is one of the finest villages in England. Unspoilt and hardly changed for 300 years, it sits between Bath, Glastonbury, Wells and Stonehenge and is a wonderful base to discover the ancient county of Somerset. The cottage has an enormous bedroom, sitting room/day room, private kitchen and shower room and its own, independent front door so you can come and go as you wish. Mells is a stunning village with rare, stone houses, unchanged for hundreds of years plus the bonus of an award-winning village pub which is one of the best gastro-pubs in England.

Steeped in history, Mells is the perfect base for a holiday in Somerset and the west country. Bath, Wells, Stonehenge, Longleat House, Cheddar Gorge, The Wookey Hole and Lacock village (for Harry Potter fans) are all within an hour's drive. Devon, The Cotswolds, the Dorset Coast are an easy day trip and we're only 1 hour 20 minutes from London by fast Intercity train.

About Rob Shreeve

ex book publisher, now semi-retired, serial entrepreneur. Married for 30 years to Maggie, professional cook (also retired). 3 grown up sons, mainly living away from home but bouncing back from tiem to time. Enjoying life in the stunning part of the country and this lovely village.

Why Rob Shreeve chose Mells

Glorious architecture, unspoilt for 3oo years with almost no modern building. There are great facilities in the village. The village pub (The Talbot Inn) is a short walk from us and is one of the best gastro-pubs in the country. You can find its details online (search for The Talbot Inn Mells). We also have an award-winning village cafe for lunches, a lovely walled garden which also serves food during the day and amazing riverside walks. Mells is half hour from Wells, Glastonbury and Bath (with its heritage architecture, great shops and galleries, the Roman Baths and the new Spa), 15 minutes drive from Longleat Safari Park, 30 miles to Stonehenge, 30 - 40 miles to the coast. One hour to the Cotswolds, 90 miles to Stratford Upon Avon. There are regular fast trains to and from London 90 mins . You can find out much more about the village and the area at the Mells village website. Search for: mellsvillage (oneword) UK web address.

Garden, TV, free wireless, local guided tours of major sites in a BMW saloon, by arrangement.

One of the very best villages in Somerset. An award winning pub and restaurant a few minutes walk away. Ancient houses, hidden walled garden and riverside walks. Little or no new building since the 18th century. Our house was built in 1598. A rare gem of a place.

Hire car is essential. We have secure parking.

Absolutely Wonderful!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

If you need to get away to relax, this is the place to stay. The cottage was everything that we had hoped for. Quiet, off the beaten path, comfortable bed. The refrigerator was stocked with a few items and the hosts, Rob and Maggie even had some rolls/buns available to us to get us started. Rob suggest a local establishment to dine, the Talbot Inn, great recommendation and a just a short walk from the cottage. Same goes for the little store/post office/cafe where we went for cappuccino and a few supplies. These a very wonderful people and they welcomed warmly. Summary, stay here!!!!

Owner's Response: David and his wife Peg were delightful guests who were a pleasure to have in the cottage. We knew that they'd had a good time but are still delighted, and grateful, for this lovely review. Come back any time. Rob and Maggie

A place to remember

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time during our Somerset holiday. The cottage was a good choice; pretty, clean and well located. It is very close to the 'Walled Garden' and the Gastropub. The village shop and coffeeshop are also within walking distance. Mells is a very pretty village with many interesting listed buildings. Maggie and Rob were very welcoming and easygoing. We definitively recommend a stay in Mells at Rob and Maggie's cottage.

Nous avons passé un excellent séjour ...

  • 5 of 5

magnifique

  • 5 of 5
