On the edge of the more busy tourist area stay in a authentic neighbourhood and immerse yourself in the local culture, yet still have easy access by foot, or a 10 minute ride on local transportation to Aya Sofia, The Blue Mosque, Topkapi palace, the Grand Bazaar, Beyoglu Taxsim etc, and all of Istanbul's major attractions..
On hilly cobbled streets, the twin neighbourhoods of Balat Fener were once the home of Istanbul's minorities. Here you'll see old Greek, Jewish, and Armenian homes, and some of the cities oldest Synagogues and Churches.
The area, because of so many national treasures, was recently declared a world heritage sight by UNESCO and has a mixture of older more conservative residents and more modern new comers living in their restored houses.
Your host's are local British/Turkish residents on hand to give any information or help if required.
The area is loved by photographers and film makers so don't be surprised to come across film crews as you wander around. The street were you will stay was featured in the last Bond movie 'Sky fall'
We stayed in both the Old Stay Istanbul Studio and the Tangerine House during our trip to Istanbul in May. The studio was small but comfortable. The Tangerine House was exceptional. The interior decoration, which in this historic house offered tranquil respite from the stark urban reality of a city the size of Istanbul. It was like living within a work of art. Of course, the House had all the mod cons and amenities a traveller needs to feel at home. This house is so much more than a typical holiday rental -- it is more akin to a show home.
Though we never met the hosts, who happened to be travelling while we were in Istanbul, they were very responsive to our emails both before our arrival and during our stay. The Balat Fener neighbourhood provides a glimpse of life in Istanbul outside of the tourist area. There are surprises around every corner and we explored the neighbourhood extensively -- good food, genuinely friendly people, memorable experiences. We were always glad to be back in the "hood" away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist attractions.
In our opinion, this is the ideal place to stay in Istanbul.
The house has been beautifully restored so that it is quirky and unusual whilst still being very comfortable and functional.
The area around the house is amazing and it was lovely to get lost wandering the streets.
We were a bit concerned about visiting Istanbul after recent events but felt so safe in the city - much safer than some other European capitals, and with fewer visitors than usual it was a great time to explore the city.
It was very easy to get around by public transport and Ozkan made us so welcome, arranging a transfer from the airport, helping with all our questions, giving us lots of useful information and being around in case we needed him.
Istanbul was one of our favourite ever city breaks, and we would highly recommend staying in this property.
My husband, 17 year old daughter, her friend and I stayed in this wonderful apartment for six nights and it was perfect for us. My husband and I had the third floor room with balcony and view, and our daughter and her friend had the second floor room, each bedroom with its own bathroom. The house is both stylish and comfortable with everything you need, including laundry. Ozkan met us at the apartment, and gave us a personal orientation to the property and neighborhood. We took advantage of the airport transportation service offered which was both punctual and reasonably priced. Avoid the taxis, their reputation is deserved.
We arrived the day after the terrorist bombing at the airport; we were in Greece at the time, and decided that as long as we could get to Istanbul we would continue on. We are so glad we did. We had a memorable stay, exploring all Istanbul has to offer. Staying in Balat/Fener is a unique cultural experience, and my only regret is not exploring more of the neighborhood and taking more pictures. It was very safe and we felt comfortable, but if you are the Hilton type traveler it may not be for you. Also, if you have mobility issues, walking the nearby streets and the stairs in the apartment would be difficult.
If you are the type of traveler, as many VRBO patrons are, that prefers a unique and personal experience, this is the place for you. If you decide to visit, don't miss the neighborhood hamam (Turkish bath). Unforgettable!
Lovely and relaxing (and beautifully decorated) old Fener Istanbul house. Great local facilities to buy produce and kitchen to cook Istanbul turkish food. Locals are very friendly - especially the cats. Easy journey by bus or boat to down town . Although two closest boat stops are currently being rebuilt so not operating whilst we were there. Must come back
We loved this house, our second stay with Peter & Ozkan's properties in a month. The home is very comfortable and well equipped with good appliances and pots and pans in the kitchen. The 10 page information package you receive upon booking with tips and ideas for what to do in Istanbul is most helpful. The colourful neighbourhood is a work in progress with some homes renovated and or being renovated and others falling down. It is changing with many new cafes opening in the Balat area but it might be a little gritty still for some. If you go, we enjoyed Aziz Cafe for a great Cappuccino and baked goods, in case you are craving something other than Cay or Turkish Coffee. Forno, good salads, pizza with high quality ingredients. Honey store on the right hand side of the street just before Carsamba at the top of the hill, allow you to sample honeys from throughout Turkey. If you are looking for a cultural experience in a real neighbourhood this is an outstanding rental property.
This house is great! It's elegant, funky and it has been very cleverly renovated. It is well equipped and is in an interesting part of Istanbul. Easy to get into the tourist and central parts of town.
We arrived here in late June and, as the pictures show, the house was beautiful. Every room had it's charms. The house was comfortable and immaculate.
It is located in a quiet neighborhood slightly off the beaten path, a short walk up a hill. It's one of those parts of Istanbul where you feel you are visiting the 'real' city.
For a short stay, there is everything you could need to make visit comfortable. Traditional bakeries, pastry shops, cafes, markets... And even if few more contemporary storefronts have popped up.
It seemed to me that the area was going through a transition, and it's one of those places where one has the pleasure to see a vibrant city in transition, a welcome contrast to the ancient tourist sights that typically filled our days.
Ozkan, one of the owners, greeted us upon our arrival and gave us an overview of the area, of which he is very knowledgable. He was generous with his time and thoughtful in answering our questions. One could not hope for a better host.
We enjoyed staying here very much.
Stay in a recently restored home (and grade 2 historical listed building) that sleeps six.
Beautiful Greek Historical house restored in a tasteful way attracting discerning travellers.
Covering 3 floors, this is a tastefully decorated comfortable stay with many of the old features remaining (original wooden ceilings and staircase) but with all the modern facilities.
2 Bedrooms, with large double beds, 2 Bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, large lounge / living area with dining area, LCD TV, DVD and large Convertible Sofa bed.
Come and stay in the twin neighbourhoods of Balat Fener for an authentic experience of Turkish life.
On the shores of the Golden Horn, it's only a 5 minute walk down the hill to the water and original Byzantine walls.
In the heart of Istanbul's old districts and on the 7th Hill of the city, the area is changing as it's historical homes, Churches, Mosques and Synagogues are restored guided by UNESCO and other EU programs.
The right choice for the discerning traveller.
