Hibiscus is a modern house set in the heart of the popular village of Plaka and only 1000m from the sandy beach of Almyrida. Just a 3 - 4 minutes walk from the village square with a choice of excellent tavernas with traditional, home cooked food, cafes with internet access and well stocked mini markets, and a 10 minute walk to the beach and resort of Almyrida, this house is a great choice for those seeking value for money, beautiful views, and easy access to the many local amenities.
Against the traditional white walls of the house, a mature bougainvillea in vibrant purple trailing over the wooden pergola above the entrance terrace provides a bright splash of colour. The walls throughout the house have also been painted in cool white and the floors tiled in a neutral cream, giving the house a light and airy feel. To make sure your stay is all the more enjoyable, there is a fully fitted kitchen with modern appliances, including washing machine, iron & board, white doubled glazed aluminium doors and windows and shutters, and air conditioning units in the main bedroom and living room (also used for heating for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season.) The small private pool is perfect for cooling off after a hard days sunbathing, with a good selection of outdoor furniture provided.

It was dark when we arrived, so imagine our surprise when we woke to the incredible views from this villa. The two upstairs terraces
follow the sun around and capture the full vista of the bay below and the mountains beyond. We could have looked at it all day. The photographs on the site do not do the villa justice and are out of date. There is a factory building showing to the right of the front view which is not there anymore, but could put some people off. Instead, there is a newer villa below and the gardens of the existing villas are now mature and full of beautiful flowers. There is also different furniture. The villa next door no longer has a terrace overlooking the pool at Hibiscus. It has been filled in as an extension to their property. The villa is clean ( we had a complete change of bedding, towels and a maid clean mid week of our stay), comfortable, spacious and very well equipped. The only thing missing was a BBQ. The pool is big enough for swimming, wonderful for cooling off and there is plenty of outside furniture. Plaka itself is a really pretty , traditional village with several kafenions and a range of tavernas to eat. The main square is less than five minutes walk from the villa ( Epsis is a delight to eat at) and there is a new bar just across the road and up the hill called O Prinos, where the owners are very friendly and the tapas style meals are amazing. The Bicorna is also two steps around the corner for a drink and snack. Almyrida is five minutes drive or twenty minutes walk if you are feeling energetic but be warned, the hill is very steep on the way back! There you will find a lovely beach, more bars and restaurants, shops and a lovely bakery. Kalyves has more beaches and a range of art and craft shops. Aptera is a must for the old town but also the tavern. It gets a mention in The Rough Guide to Crete and the food is traditional and delicious. Kournas Lake also worth a trip. The whole area is beautiful. Would also mention the care and attention from Stella at Raki Travel. The communications all along were excellent and the information provided very helpful, even what to do if you stand on a jelly fish! We would certainly recommend for couples and will go again.
The village of Plaka has lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film 'Zorba the Greek' and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square. A few minutes by car from Hibiscus House, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas, as well as an interesting selection of local arts and crafts centres.
