|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
This cabin in Cottage Lane is a cozy and comfortable place to stay while you explore the multitude of enchanting places to be found just day-trips away. The view is excellent and across the fjord you will see Akureyri, the capital of the North, snuggling in all its quaint splendor like a jewel mounted on the setting of the sea. It takes you only five minutes to drive there for anything you might need. The cabin is brand new, clean and bright, but because of this there are regrettably no ghosts in residence. Nonetheless you will sense a benign presence of tranquillity blended with the tingling anticipation of adventure. For the beholder who has an eye for beauty, there is abundant beauty to behold. For the traveller with a keen ear, the music of memories and hopes can be heard echoing from the majestic mountains all around.
In the summertime you will enjoy The Midnight Sun. Autumn brings an exhilarating symphony of colours as the foliage changes from green to flaming red. In winter this is a wonderful spot for stargazing and dancing with the Northern Lights. Spring is when you will witness the Arctic coming to life. The cabin has everything you need for a moderate price, while not being so lavishly plush that you never want to leave the house. Which is a good thing because in all directions there are attractions you probably would not want to miss; Lake Mývatn, the award-winning Herring Era Museum in Siglufjörður, scuba diving in the ocean off Hjalteyri, exquisite swimming pools, whale watching expeditions, the Whale Museum in Húsavík, the waterfalls Goðafoss and Dettifoss. Just to name a few. Let us not forget Ásbyrgi – the horseshoe-shaped canyon which according to legend was formed when the norse god Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, touched one of its feet to the ground. Fable also relates that the canyon is the capital city of the “hidden people”.
The cabin, however, sleeps up to four normal people, two in a double bed downstairs and two upstairs in the little loft. Pet giraffes will not be allowed on the loft under any circumstances. The veranda is a lovely place to savour a cup of coffee in the morning or a grill at night. Or just to delight in whatever, whenever. Should you get restless on a day of rest, the immediate environment offers ample opportunity for short strolls up and down Cottage Lane or into the welcoming woods. Remember, if you get lost in an Icelandic forest, just stand up. (Actually this is no longer the least bit true but mildly amusing even so).
The cottage was just perfect for three of us, myself and my parents, three adults. I think the place is perfect even for four adults if one does not mind having only one bathroom to share.
We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage for three nights. Though we already had everything we needed to prepare our meals, the cottage had everything for anyone who is willing to cook for themselves. We prepared our dinner each evening with local ingredients that we'd bought at the supermarket, such as lamb, salmon or trout. Having dinner enjoying the beautiful view of the town of Akureyri, fjord and the sunset over the mountain still covered with snow was an utter pleasure. We didn't have to go to any restaurants since we just loved too much being at the cottage. It is the same thing in the morning with the beautiful view as well as at night when it's dark. We were so happy that we did not stay in the centre of town since the view from the other side where we were was much more beautiful.
The location was perfect for us to explore the area, one day to Asbyrgi and Myvatn (Krafla volcano as well), the next day to Dalvik, Siglufjordhur and Hofsos. Dettifoss and Selfoss are also just about an hour and a half away. Godafoss is an half hour or less drive away.
If you're planning to stay in Akureyri as a base to travel around the Northern area of Iceland, I highly recommend this cottage. We really hope we can go back there again sometime.
Loved the view of the mountains, water and town of Akureyri nestled across the bay. My favorite accommodation in a 10 day stay in Iceland. Compact and cozy, and although new, great character and tastefully decorated. Great spot to explore nearby Akureyki, 90 km drive to lake Myvatn day trip with Gluggafoss water falls on the way. Special dinner at the Strikid restaurant in town, melt in your mouth local lamb and fish. Wish we could have stayed longer!
A wonderful base for touring around the North of Iceland. We golfed at 2AM and you have a lovely view of Akureyri. We would stay again.
