River beach at St Aulaye
Car: necessary

There are sandy river beaches at Saint Aulaye and Aubeterre. St Aulaye also has a Treetop Adventure area by the river. Parcoul Water Park (5kms) has a self-service restaurant, beach, water slides, paddle boats, mini golf and playground. At Lac Jemaye swimming, walking, fishing, watersports and a play area are available in a beautiful natural setting. Golf is available at the Manoir de Longeveau, 21kms away and horse riding is possible at la Roche Chalais (10kms).

We have recently teamed up with Themed Holiday Ideas (www.themedholidayideas.com) offering accommodation to complement their varied assortment of special interest holidays in the area.

The nearby town of St Aulaye has all the basic amenities including a small supermarket, butcher, 2 bakers shops, newsagent, bank and post office as well as a pharmacy and hairdressers. There are several bars, cafes and restaurants and the Tourist Information Office can be found there too.

The town is famous for its Museum of Pastels and during the summer it hosts a biennial international exhibition of Pastels which attracts many visitors. The next one will be held in 2016.

The nearby town of Chalais has a large street market every Monday morning where you can stock up on local produce and crafts as well as household items.

Further afield you can visit the beautiful city of Bordeaux or Perigueux - the capital of the Dordogne - which has wonderful old buildings, a splendid cathedral and the excavated Roman site of Vesunna. There are also many charming villages, many of them in the Top 100 beautiful village list, including nearby Aubeterre-sur-Dronne with its unique underground church. Another favourite destination is the hilltop village of St Emilion, set among vineyards and beautifully quaint with wonderful views over the surrounding area. Bergerac, situated on the River Dordogne, is also worth a visit and for a longer day out why not drive along the Dordogne valley with its wonderful scenery, clifftop chateaux, and old Bastide towns.

Visits to vineyards and wine-tasting tours are also popular in an area famous for so many well-known wines - Bordeaux, Medoc, Bergerac and the luscious sweet Monbazillac to name but a few. Less well known is Pineau, a local drink made from wine fortified with brandy and closely resembling port
