Beautiful location, lovely cottage
All very nice, our second time. Well equipped kitchen and plentiful hot water for the bath, which is always nice. Enjoyed the log burner after trial and error.
I found the bed in the main bedroom a bit hard but I am 'getting on' so it is probably just me.
Another strange thing. I couldn't find the router, which I was going to plug into so that I could do some work while there. I had the same problem last time but had forgotten, a mystery. Anyway, it was, in a way, nice to have an excuse not to work!
We felt at home. The place was immacutely clean. All very lovely.
It's always a great pleasure to welcome returning customers, there's no better feed-back than this, so thank you so much for coming back!
We are sorry the bed was not as confortable for you: all mattresses are fairly new as a matter of fact, and high quality - and the problem has not been reported before. As you suggest, mattress firmness is a matter of subjective taste though, and I hope it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.
I am sorry about the router 'mistery' too - nobody has ever asked to plug in directly in the router, and never knew it could be a problem. We are always on hand to help and can easily be reached via phone or email, all you have to do is ask! The router is indeed in the cottage, we just keep it locked away....
A week in a lovely small town
We really loved staying in Old Rose Cottage. Lots of opportunities for a walk around Turville. Nearby there are nice towns like Henley-on-Thames and Marlow for shopping and dining.
Thanks Jan, you are welcome back any time!
Amazing gem in quintessentially English village
We had one of the best weeks away ever - Turville is beautiful and so is the cottage. Comfortable beds, lovely shower, wood burning stove and a sweet garden across the pathway - couldn’t ask for more! Its well equipped and of course for such an historical property very cosy which adds to the charm.
One of the best things is being away from everything, there is wifi although mobile phone reception was vague at times so we arranged to have our calls diverted to the property which accepts incoming calls no problem. Nearest shops are a few miles away which also adds to the feeling of being able to get away from everything.
We found out that Turville has been used in loads of films and television programs which isnt surprising as the village is pretty much the same as it would have been 400 years ago! There is a gorgeous church and fantastic pub which just adds to the charm of the place.
We just didnt want to leave at the end of the week and cant wait to come back to stay again! Thank you so much for letting us share this amazing property.
Cosy Cottage for Short Break
Had three nights here for a short birthday holiday. Very quiet and peaceful, with beautiful surroundings. It was nice to be able to walk out from the property onto the neighbouring hills. In many ways a great location - no city bustle in the village, but a short distance from nice country houses, the shopping village at Bicester, Henley, Marlow and Oxford.
The cottage was comfortable, we slept well and we enjoyed the log fire. The hob was fine - although one burner didn't seem to work - and we didn't use the oven. Although early October it was a bit chilly, but we easily got the place nice and warm. However facilities are limited by the location - no 'phone signal and the TV was not really watchable.
The pub is OK, but as the village has no street lights there is not much else you can do - although the upside is being able to see the stars.
So great for a short break - I'm not sure we would have been so happy staying for a week - but the tranquility would suit many, I am sure.
Hello John, thank you for your kind feed back, much appreciated. We are happy you found the cottage warm and comfortable. I apologize if one of the hob burner didn't work, I was alerted to the problem but could not fix it before your arrival: as you still had 3 burners working I thought you'd rather not be disturbed by tradesmen during your stay! The TV should be working reasonably - sometimes signal is disturbed if it gets windy thought; I wish you had told me and I could have rectified that for you. There is wi-fi in the cottage, which works very well. The peace, the remoteness and the possibility of watching the stars are actually the reasons why our guests keep coming back to Turville (that, and the fact that we are 20 min away from Oxford and less than 1 hr from west London!) although I understand it may not be for every one....
Brilliant little cottage. Beautiful village. Worth a visit
Ideal cottage in gorgeous village. Cottage had all what we needed. Perfect location for Henley-on-Thames and Marlow..
Thank you Wendy, it's been a pleasure to have you in Turville.
Uncomfortable place to stay & couldn’t wait to go back home.
Very old cottage & could be comfortable upstairs & down. Upstairs was ok but downstairs the lounge is awful. The settee & chairs smelled very musty & so uncomfortable to sit in - it was ikea type settee full size which smelled like been left out in the rain for weeks - the lounge itself felt dirty. The floor covering in the kitchen was folded in places rumpled & unsafe to walk on. We couldn’t wait to go home & I would never ever recommend this property.
We would kindly refer you to the email below, sent the same day you contacted us after your stay at the property.
As you never contacted us during your stay and never aknowledged our response, you gave us no opportunity to remedy matters.
We always do our utmost to provide a prompt and effective remedy to issues which guests bring to our attention during their stay. We are very proud of our 4* AA rating which we feel is rightly deserved and make every effort we can to ensure that our guests enjoy their stay in this unique location. Friends and family are also regular visitors who ensure that everything in the property rightly fits with our aim to provide a home from home experience. The cottage is over 400 years old, grade II* listed and so the rooms are smaller, floors and timber framed walls are not flat and level unlike modern homes, which is part of the unique character of the property as is the truly quaint village where the house is located.

Thank you for your email and we are so sorry to hear that the cottage did not meet with your expectations. It is always difficult to deal with issues when they are brought to our attention after guests leave, when we no longer have an opportunity to address things. Any further details you can provide about the smell you mention would be helpful as the carpets and furnishings were professionally cleaned only last month. We have noted your comment about the comfort of the sitting room, although with limited space it is a compromise as it won’t accommodate traditional lounge furniture.
The cottage has been receiving guests for over fifteen years with many repeat satisfied visitors, so it is a shame that on this occasion you were unhappy. We do value your feedback as every guest will have a different perspective and will look into any changes we can make.
Property Manager at Old Rose Cottage
Old Rose Cottage is located in Turville, in the heart of the Hambleden Valley, desiganted as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This tiny village is actually one of the most popular film and TV location of the country: St Mary, the village's church, is the church featured in The Vicar of Dibley, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based at the Cobstone Windmill (which overlooks the village) and the serie Midsomer Murders is a regular visitor here at the village (to name just a few!) And it's easy to see why. Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, the postcard perfect village will give you the impression of stepping back in time with its tranquility and its delightful cottages, most of which date back to the 16th century. The unspoilt beautiful countryside of the Chilterns AONB offers fabulous walking and cycling opportunities, the River Thames is 4 miles away - and the restaurants, boutiques, museums and buzzing night life of Henley, Marlow, Thame, Wallingford and Oxford are just a short drive away. Or you can relax in front of the log burner and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of Turville!!
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: a paradise for ramblers and cyclists, the breathtaking countryside of the Chilterns is without a doubt the best attraction of the area. The best way to explore the surroundings is walking or cycling; there are around 2,000 kilometers of trails scattered across the Chilterns to suit all levels of ability and 'motivation', and Turville is ideally placed to take advantage of quite a few of them! The breathtaking landscape is of gentle rolling chalk hills, dotted with small scale agriculture, woodlands, hedgerows and small traditional English towns and villages.
Closest to us are the Ridgeway Path, probably the oldest path in Britain, The Chiltern Way and Midsomer Murder Trails! Or you can follow England's best known river along The Thames Path.
The River Thames is just 4 miles away, and the area is famous for its rowing tradition (world famous Henley Royal Regatta takes place in July, Marlow Regatta happens in June) and there are plenty of canoeing, kayacking and sailing opportunities - as well as pic-nicking along the river. Golf courses are available in Henley (Badgemore Park Golf Club and Aspect Park Golf Club) and Marlow (Harleyford Golf Club) .
Hughenden Manor, home to Queen Victoria prime minister Benjamin Disraeli; Cliveden Estate overlooking the Thames; beautiful Greys Court and West Wycombe village are some of the National Trust properties you will find nearby, well worth a visit.
FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT Henley River & Rowing Museum, The Hellsfire Caves in West Wycombe, the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden are just few of the must see places for families.
SHOPPING - SIGHTSEING - THEATRES - EATING OUT: Henley, Marlow, Watlington, Thame, Wallingford are all pretty historical market towns and feature interesting boutiques and independent shops as well as a choice of restaurants, pubs and gastropubs catering for every taste and budget. If it's culture you crave, Oxford is 20 miles away and theatres, galleries, museums and so many festivals and events you will be spoilt for choice happen in Henley and Marlow. Bicester Outlet Village is about 20 minute drive from the cottage.
