Why Jamie Waring chose Northern Scottish Highlands

The property was originally bought by my parents as a holiday home in the late 60's , It didn't have electricity for many years so all our holidays were a great adventure spoting deer in the field at the front and catching baby salmon in the stream .

Over the years the property has been renovated and at the end of 2011 was completely re done inside and out but kept its original character it even has a dish washer !

Guestbook comments from the owner

This cosy cottage provided us with a peaceful escape from the rigours of urban life. It is ideally situated for exploring the fantastic attractions of Sutherland; not too isolated but providing accessibility to the lochs, rivers, walks and places of historical interest which abound in this area. We found this to be a very welcoming and friendly area, from the caretaker, the nearby residents, the visiting sheep, staff of shops and restaurants etc. A week was not enough for us and we hope to return to continue our exploration of the area.

My Response

Great to hear you enjoyed your stay at the cottage and the local area , Very happy to have you back any time . Regards Jamie

Quiet & peaceful.

  • 4 of 5

Lovely little cottage, not immaculate but very liveable if you are not too fussy. Fine for two people but although it sleeps three (double bed, not king size, and third bed is up an open staircase from the downstairs bedroom - no privacy), it would be a bit tight for three as there are only two bar stools at the worktop and the couch only seats two. A small child would be ok. There is no phone reception or internet at the cottage (wonderful!) but our mobiles worked down the road a bit. Nice big bathroom. If you want to sit outside in the peace and quiet, suggest you bring your own deck chairs/loungers.The open fire is great in the evening. Enough logs are supplied for about two nights but you can buy more in Tain, maybe Dornoch. You can buy everything you need for self catering in Dornoch, which also has a number of nice cafes. The Trawler chip shop/restaurant in Golspie is great - best chips ever! The visitor center at Falls of Shin is now open again and they do evening meals as well as daytime meals and snacks. We saw salmon jumping up the Falls. The road to the cottage from the A9 is single track with passing places. Be careful as some of the locals drive pretty fast round the blind bends! Thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay, didn't want to go home.

Peace

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage for a week in July. The location is great - very quiet (we counted about 3 cars a day) with some nice views of the surrounding hills. The garden is very pretty (if a bit waterlogged) and ideal for kids. Dornoch is within a 10 minute drive and it's a lovely town. Special mention for the whisky bar in the Castle, incredible.

The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and very well stocked with everything you could possibly need. The open fire was a plus (even if we didn't light it) and the owner had got in a stock of logs. The beds are very comfortable and the bathroom was a good size. The lounge/kitchen is minute but as we were out all day it didn't matter. I do think it might be a bit claustrauphobic if you stayed in all the time. Contact with the owner was limited but he responded very quickly by email to all our questions and we also had a contact telephone number for the housekeeper.

There is no phone signal nor WiFi at the cottage (at least with my phone) which was fine for us as we were on a get away from it all holiday but this might be a problem for some folk.

All in all a great base for touring this part of the Highlands. Would strongly recommend.

Romantic little cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is lovely and just perfect for a romantic stay, but for more than two people the cottage isn't big enough.

The possibly only two downsides are the very bad isolated main door and the missing table.

Oh, and the caretaker is a super nice guy :)

Schönes traditionelles schottisches Farmhäuschen

  • 5 of 5

Dornoch is an ideal location for many local attractions and a great spot for exploring further north and over to the west coast .

Locally there is a beautiful coastline with sandy beaches , sea Lochs and estuaries with amazing bird and wildlife , fairy tale Castles and the most Northerly Cathedral .

Golf enthusiasts will love the Royal Dornoch golf course and 3 other courses within a 20 min drive .

There is good fishing in many hill lochs and Salmon fishing is available on the Helmsdale and Shin Rivers .

Many cyling trails have been developed in the area many linking forestry tracks and scenic rides together to create a variety of interesting rides .

Whiskey is a big attraction in scotland and one of the best, Glenmorangie is only 10 mins away .

If your into walking , step outside the barn and you can take your pick ,walk down the quite country lane to the River Evelix or over the hill and look out to the coast .
