Not only listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO but anche nicknamed the Capital of Baroque and home to the lovely 'Flower Festival' flower festival held every May. The Vendicari nature reserve (20 minutes) is a gem for all nature lovers and offers spectacular long sandy beaches. Syracuse is only a 30 minute drive away and a visit to the ITS ancient quarter 'Ortigia' and Greek ruins is a must. Also nearby are Cava Grande, Cava's Carousel and Pantalica, spectacular gorge and the deepest canyon in Europe: a series of rock pools, waterfalls and ancient cave-homes. The areas of Pachino (famous for cherry tomatoes) and Portopalo are very interesting places to visit. It is here you will find That the southernmost point of Sicily the little 'Islet currents', with a lighthouse and where sea turtles and pelicans can still be frequently spotted on the shore

A traditional rural cottage with very good facilities and in a quiet location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Ernesto's cottage. We had driven from Catania airport and he met us at the motorway exit for Noto and we followed his car to the cottage. On the way he stopped to show us a good place to eat and where the nearest shops were. He gave us lots of advice on local places to see. A great host.

The cottage is part of what was once his great grandparents' farm. (The rest of the property is now the agritourismo Borgo Alveria which does not impinge on the cottage.) The cottage was clean and in good condition. Furniture is traditional Sicilian, though the beds are modern and very comfortable. There is a terrace outside where we ate breakfast and supper most days and could have used the barbecue. It is in a quiet area with very little passing traffic.

We spent the last two weeks of September 2016 there and found it an excellent base to explore that part of Sicily. Siracusa is in easy reach and not to be missed - we spent a day in the Ortigia area (parking in the Talete car park, €1 per hour, pay on exit) and another day in the archaeological zone and museum (parking at Paradise Parking, €3 all day). The Baroque towns of Noto, Palazzolo, Modica and Ragusa are all in easy reach. Noto is nearest and also has a supermarket. The cottage is a 15 minute walk from the entrance to the site of Noto Antica (always open and free) and we visited the site twice - once to explore the city ruins and once to go down into the limestone gorge. On the coast south of Noto is Vendicari which includes a nature reserve with flocks of flamingos among other birds; it also has a beach. Just south again at San Lorenzo is another good beach and further on the interesting old fishing town of Marzamemi.

Eating: At Ernesto's suggestion we had lunch one day at Agritourismo Leone (near Testa del Acqua) which was an amazing Sicilian meal (and only €22 pp for four courses, coffee and wine) There is no menu - you get what they are serving that day. Probably worth ringing to book as when we went another day there was nothing doing as they were all out picking the grapes. We also found excellent places to eat in Noto (Trattoria Carmine), Palazzola (Taverna di Bacco) and Modica (Osteria dei Sapori Perduti).

Overall a great place to stay to get to know something of that fascinating part of Sicily. Highly recommended.

Una Tranquilla settimana

  • 5 of 5

It was a great holiday, the house was in the middle of the country, away from the usual hassle and basile of the city. Ernesto was great and discrete, but always available if needed .

Bellissimo ricordo

  • 5 of 5

I proprietari disponibili.
