Experience the incredible beauty of the north shore at the Garden Cottage in Haena, Kauai, located in the heart of the most beautiful 10 miles of the island. We are close to Tunnels Beach, and set between 2 of the top 5 rated beaches on the islands. Kepuhi beach is 50 yards down the driveway; directly behind is lush jungle hillside, the border to 1000's of acres of private nature conservancy land. All tucked into a quiet, secluded, tree lined cul-de-sac.
The private, cozy cottage interior features a high open-beam ceiling, wood floors, and tropical décor, along with cooking facilities. Outside is a private shower with a spectacular view of the jungle, private deck, barbecue, tiki torches to enjoy the evening, and all the style of old Hawaii.
If you are seeking a Honeymoon hideaway or romantic getaway...Relax to the soothing sound of rolling surf, enjoy a bonfire on your private beach, and just minutes away is Hanalei with restaurants, dancing and entertainment. You can walk the beach the entire final 2 miles to Ke’e, where the road ends and the famous Napali coast begins. Or you can walk the beach just 300 yards to the Hanalei Colony Resort, for the only (award winning) restaurant and coffee house on this part of the island. Or just take our beach chairs and walk the few steps to the beach out front!
We are an approved Kauai Vacation Rental TVNC #1052.

About the owners Doug, Bev, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug and Bev were first drawn to Kauai in the early 80’s, after many visits they finally decided to buy this wonderful property in 2006. Doug, a 35-year designer/builder, has spent the last 10 years personalizing the house. Bev, a jack-of-all-trades, has owned a health food store, opened a charter elementary school, run a motel, and managed their various properties over the years. Their youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, she now manages the family’s properties. Doug and Beverly now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.
They also have vacation rentals in the Escalante Canyons of Southern Utah and in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona.
Katie Howland purchased this cottage in 2006
Doug and Bev were always drawn to the North Shore, when making the decision to put down roots, they couldn’t resist the best part of the island. They fell in love with the unique beauty of their home that balances both accessibility and seclusion.
There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door (see above). This home offers the lush mountainous jungle of Kauai out the back door and the soothing beach and ocean out the front door.
What a gem this cottage is! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and thank you for sharing part of your homestead! Loved the noises at night and all the birds in the morning. This place has everything we needed-especially-tranquility! Mahalo!
The Garden Cottage is the perfect size for a couple. We loved the way it is hidden away by palm trees but at the same time you are very close to the road and villages if you want to be. It was very clean and fitted with all the appliances one might want. Being able to make our own meals was very convenient. It was an ideal starting point for our hiking excursions on the Kalalau trail and kayaking and swimming in Hanalei, two of our favourite spots on the island. We are already looking forward to going back there!
I love this sweet little cottage close to my favorite spot in the islands. The setting is just a short walk to the beach which offers a breathtaking walk to Tunnels and beyond. This place feels loved, and I am already looking forward to next year.
As an annual trip to Kauai's North Shore, my sister and I consistently return to stay at the Garden Cottage because it's ideal: there's a gas grill to barbecue fresh fish right on the back deck, Tunnels Beach is just a healthy beach walk away, another beautiful beach is just across the street, Beverly (owner) is easy to work with, all the amenities one could hope for AND a perfect, outdoor, and very private, shower is just out the back door! Patricia makes sure that the cottage is clean and welcoming and she's always available if anything is needed. We love this part of Kauai and will continue to make the Garden Cottage our first choice.
THIS PLACE IS SO BEAUTIFUL ! IT IS THE EPITOME FOR A ROMANTIC HONEYMOON RETREAT.
IT IS CLEAN AND HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED. EXOTIC JUNGLE SETTING.
WE LOVED THE RAIN, THE KING SIZE BED WAS VERY COMFORTABLE, THE KITCHEN WAS PERFECT, WE COOKED MEALS. WE FOUND THE TAP WATER TO BE GOOD - IT TASTED LIKE RAIN WATER.
HOT OUTDOOR SHOWER WAS AN EXOTIC TREAT.
THE BEACH IS ONLY A 2 MINUET WALK AWAY ( ACROSS A QUIET ROAD). I ONLY HEARD OCEAN WAVES AND RAIN, (GLAD I DIDNT HEAR ROOSTERS.)
THE OWNER AND CARETAKER OF PROPERTY ARE VERY ATTENTIVE TO RESPOND TO PHONE WHEN YOU CALL , THEY ARE VERY NICE PEOPLE.
WE BOUGHT OUR GROCERIES IN KAPAA AT SAFEWAY AND PAPAYAS NATURAL FOOD STORE BEFORE WE DROVE THERE.
CHECK OUT FARMERS MARKET FOR APPLE BANANAS AND STRAWBERRY PAPAYAS SO YUMMY!!!
WE HIKED NAPALI COAST TRAIL TOO.
We are finally back in the correct time zone, and while sharing our Hawaiian vacation photos, we find that we are often talking about the great vacation rental we had. It was truly everything we wished for. It was just the right size for the two of us, and had what we wanted; privacy, quiet (and still hear the ocean), private outside shower, gas grill (not the charcoal grill listed in features), nice frig big enough for two weeks, and falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of the jungle. Sometimes we would take our breakfast and walk down the driveway, across the narrow two lane road to the beach just a couple of steps away. A great way to greet the morning, enjoy another cup of coffee, or stroll down the beach toward Tunnels. The North Shore may be a "drive" to the other side of the island. But, we find that what we want in our Hawaiian vacation can be found on the North Shore--beyond Princeville, past the one lane bridges, were cell service is iffy, and time slows. This was our 4th time to Hawaii, our 3rd to the Haena area, and our first to the Garden Cottage. It was our home away from home, and one that we will be looking forward to when we return.
This lovely cottage is an absolute North Shore Haven! The photos do not do it justice, so clean, tidy, and well thought out. A grand place to call home for a week, with all the little extras you may need! The kitchen is well equipped with nice cook ware. We are old fashioned and like to dine-in, between the kitchen and the grill we were in our element! So worth the time to dine on the fabulous back deck. Complete with tiki-torches and candles!
Hard to believe there are two other rentals on the same property (great minds think alike) so it was very quite. All the privacy you could want! There were beach chairs, a cooler and various other items to use. Grand to walk across the street for coffee on the beach. Our rooster was a 4:30 am guy, which was fine with us, plus he's handsome! Really that is just part of Kauai, you are a guest...get used to it and laugh! Be prepared there are mosquitos...they are tropical and you don't know your bit till too late! So use the bug juice of your choice and enjoy having the jungle as your private back yard! Oh and they have great screen doors, keep them closed and you will be fine!
The owners were wonderful to work with and their property manager Patricia is awesome!
If we are so lucky enough to go back again next year we would definitely want to book here!
There's more...but you have to go see for yourself!
