I decided to restructure this small villa and the beautiful old farmhouse which shares the grounds. The whole enterprise was a major restructuring job. In addition, fields had to be converted into gardens so so we now have 2-3 acres of olive grove and gardens. I enjoy meeting my guests from all over the world and making sure that they are well-looked after. I am very lucky in having good helpers, particularly the housekeepers and the gardener. Each year I plan a new project for the garden. Of these, the nicest so far are a secret garden, a formal Italian garden and a rose garden. The most recent project is a surprise xeric garden (local low-maintenance plants ideal for this climate) in the olive grove, and is centered on a sculpture I designed which was executed by a local craftsman. Just that small project took 9 months! I love to get guests' suggestions for new projects.
Owner purchased this villa in 2005
This area, the Val di Chiana is strategically located to see some of the finest parts of Tuscany. There are stunningly beautiful towns like nearby Cortona, and the wine-producing hill-towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino. The countryside is magnificent in every season. Florence is only 1 hour away, Siena 45 minutes, and Rome a little more than 2 hours. This area is still unspoilt. There are excellent reasonably priced local restaurants and lots to do. We provide details and touring itineraries.
Most guests say that the gardens and olive grove are the best features of La Colonica. Others like the dining patio and its views. All like the comfort of the house which is air-conditioned and cool in summer and cozy with an open wood fire in winter. There is much to see and do in the area: we provide itineraries. Or else, just stay at home, enjoy the sun, explore the property and its various gardens. Eat out on the patio, using our home-grown organic olive oil. Have a barbecue! Enjoy the local food and wine: buy home-made fresh pasta, or try out the wonderful local pastry-shop. Discover your favorite gelato (ice-cream). Visit the designer discount outlet malls nearby. Go to one of the many local festivals and meet the local people!
Our first visit to Tuscany. Beautiful location. Your suggestions of side trips were wonderful. We enjoyed many of the local wines and the olive oil from your property was enjoyable. We were referred to come here by relatives and will continue this tradition of telling other Canadians about this little place of beauty.

This is a truly wonderful place to stay but its biggest selling point is its location. We went to Florence by train in one hour, and to Siena, Assisi, Perugia, and every single wine-producing hilltown you can think of by car - all less than one hour away.
The cottage is brilliantly decorated, really spacious and has proper air-conditioning in every room. Two really good sized bedrooms and immaculately clean bathrooms. Beautiful living areas (really well-designed and decorated) but we more or less lived on the patio from breakfast on. Everything is well-cared for and you can see it. There is huge attention to detail. Very nice unobtrusive owners and staff including the cleaner who is a darling. We wanted self-catering but we ended up eating out a lot and found some great ristoranti - the owners provide a guide and do the bookings if you want. Best thing of all - once you get inside the gates of the property, its like you're in another world. We have been to Italy seven times now and this is definitely our favorite. Last but not least - the cost is very reasonable as everything is included. We are going back!
If you are looking to spend a wonderful vacation in a perfect place to tour Tuscany, then LaColonica in Marciana Della Chiana is where you want to be. From the moment we booked our stay to the day we departed, we couldn't have had a better experience. Cesare and David are the most incredible hosts and, indeed, the most incredible people. They go out of their way to be helpful and to provide every comfort and convenience one might need, and they do it with such good nature, kindness and generosity of spirit. Speaking of generosity, how nice it was to find two bottles of local wine and fresh flowers on the dining table when we arrived. The property, itself, is a bucolic delight -- a restored farmhouse where the owner lives and a lovely cottage for guests on beautifully maintained grounds with olive groves, flowers, fruit trees . . . We were two couples staying there -- my husband and me and my brother and sister-in-law -- and the cottage is laid out perfectly for each couple's privacy. The common living area in the center is flanked on each side by a very nicely-sized bedroom with ensuite. The kitchen is small, but fully equipped; and the dining room overlooks the olive groves. The covered back patio is a wonderful place to have breakfast; and anyplace on the property is perfect for an afternoon glass of wine. Anna, the housekeeper, keeps the cottage impeccably neat and clean and readily supplied with linens, and she is always anxious to be of help. I could go on and on; but you should just stay there and happily find out for yourself how perfect it is.
My husband and I are finishing up our 2 week stay at La Colonica and could not be more pleased! You can walk into the small village of Marciana Della Chiana to eat, but the setting behind a gate feels as if it is in the middle of the country. There are many places to sit and relax outside and it is beautiful with the olive grove and hills in the distance. The house is well furnished, clean and comfortable; we had another couple stay with us and you each have your own bedroom and bath. When we arrived there were fresh cut flowers and a bottle of red wine and one of white wine left for us. David acquainted us with the house and gave us notes for many different trips, walks and restaurants in the area. The location was great to visit Tuscany and Umbria. All in all, this has been a wonderful vacation and we will hope to return to La Colonica!
The location is perfect for day trips throughout Tuscany and Umbria and David is very helpful in providing details including restaurants. From the fresh cut flowers upon arrival to the olive oil produced on the property every thing is done right. Many Americans find Italian bathrooms lacking; not at this property. We have stayed many places in Italy over the years and this was one of the most enjoyable. Even Rocco, the dog, was a delight. I have recommended La Colonica to family and friends.
The cottage is lovely and very comfortable with two large bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. It has a beautiful front and backyard. It even has a washing machine. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, dishes and glasses. My favorite room was the dining room that looks out over the backyard.
The owner was extremely helpful in suggesting restaurants and making reservations for us since no one spoke Italian. The recommendations were fantastic; great food, excellent wine at a very reasonable price, and interesting villages. He also recommended several cooking schools and the one we chose was fantastic. We recommend this, giving it a 10 out of 10!
We loved staying at La Colonica. The peaceful setting is beautiful, with comfortable outdoor seating overlooking olive trees and manicured yard. The cottage is incredibly well-equipped and tastefully decorated. Excellent recommendations for restaurants, tours, and things to do were provided by Cesare and staff. This is a perfect home-base for Tuscan day trips. We would definitely stay here on our next trip. It has our highest recommendation.
