Casa a Corte is a beautiful, restored property of Roman origin near the hamlet of Gugliano. The house is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, fruit trees, wild flowers, chestnut woodlands, mountain streams and offers relaxation to those wanting to leave hectic city life behind. However, the lively town of Lucca, a 20 minutes drive by car, offers everything one could wish for, whether it be fine dining, shopping, sight-seeing or cycling around the ancient walls during the 'passegiata' at sunset. The house is well located for visiting Florence and Siena, the seaside resorts and the mountain regions of Garfagnana. Casa a Corte is set in 30 acres of its own land which is used for the production of wine and olive oil. From the three large terraces and swimming pool, one can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and hear the distant sound of church bells and choir from over the valley.
There are 3 large terraces with dining areas and chairs for relaxing, a 12.5 x 5m pool with beautiful panoramic views and garden for those wanting to read alone or sleep in a hammock. There is a well-maintained garden and our lovely pool enjoys sun throughout the day.
The gardens provide perfect areas for relaxation and for children to play.
The house is surrounded by 3 large terraces. The east terrace is accessed from both the kitchen and dining room and has a large slate dining table and eight chairs. A pergola of climbing jasmine, wysteria and passion fruit provides dappled shade. There are views through the olive trees to the pool. Lighting above the large stone table allows for 'al fresco' dining.
The large terracotta tiled south terrace is a sun worshippers' dream. It also benefits from a 3 seater sofa, 2 arm chairs and dining table.
The west terrace enjoys a well established garden of lavender, roses, mimosa and fig trees, plus a table and benches. All terraces have fabulous views across the olives and vineyards and valley and are lit automatically at dusk. The pool lights also come on until 23.00.
The area is organic & a wildlife enthusiasts dream with many rare species of animals & birds. In the spring & summer the area is full of wild flowers. As Italy becomes more developed, with more young people attracted to city life, the importance of our valley is becoming more significant as they are becoming the last areas of traditional farming

About Hugh Johnson
We are a well travelled family of 4, who grew up in the Far East & moved to Europe to become a wildlife film maker. Although I now specialise in another area of film, my job is to make objects & places look beautiful. Our 2 children both studied languages at university, have travel & worked in the Far East, Europe, Africa & South, Central & North America, with interests in food, lifestyle, wildlife, art & sport. During 2016/ 17 Hazel & I have been working on a pictorial book on Tuscany, the local area, it's food & people. Hopefully this will be published in 2018. We are very knowledgeable about the area and popular in the local community.
Hugh Johnson purchased this House in 2000
Why Hugh Johnson chose Lucca
Having viewed several properties during the summer & autumn of 1999, we fell in love with Casa a Corte after seeing the house and land from across the valley with the mountains behind. We immediately knew this was the house we were looking for. Over 18 years we have built up a very good relationship with the locals, who are charming & extremely welcoming. One of the real plus points of the area is there are so many things to do, whether it is walking near the house, going to the beach, exploring art & history, Lucca's music festival in July, markets and festivals, plus sport.
What makes this House unique
Our passion is being outside and spend much of our 'working' holiday looking at the wonderful countryside & wildlife, chatting to the locals & trying to become a better cook. The farmer and his friends in Gugliano have been so helpful & kind to us and have made Casa a Corte a special place for all our family. The local restaurants, especially at the wonderful Antica Locanda have given us lots of tips when producing our olive oil & have become family friends. A recent project has been working with the son & head chef, Aurelio Barattini on a book titled the Tuscan chef, featuring his restaurant & farm, plus lots of recipes.

Tuscany is beautiful in the Spring. The birds are singing and the wild flowers are beautiful. We had perfect weather, ate at least 2 meals a day in the amazing garden terraces with wonderful fresh pastas and food from the market and local shops.
We were invited to the Lucca film festival and met Martin Freeman, which we loved.
We ate superb food, locally and in Lucca, but generally liked being at the house best. We slept so well, read lots of books, enjoyed the walks and garden, the pool and hammock.
The perfect place to be with family & friends.
Thank you, Mark & Milly Gibson
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful!
We had a wonderful stay at Casa Corte. The house is incredible and the setting breathtaking. Waking up to the view of the pool makes you want to pinch yourself.
Hugh's recommendations were incredibly helpful. We would really recommend getting the 2 very talented chefs to cook for you for a night - a brilliant experience.
This is a great holiday for a family, we would go back in an instant.
Thank you Hugh!
Helen, Thanks so much for your review & for all your complimentary words.
I'm glad your birthday celebratory dinner was a success - they are really popular with guests. I do love the view of the pool from the bedroom. It's a lovely way to start the day.
Thanks v much again, Hugh
A stunning large farm house with beautiful pool
We had a fantastic stay at Casa A Corte. The owner Hugh could not have been more helpful, very responsive and answered any questions we had about the property and surrounding area. He also gave us lots of brilliant recommendations for local restaurants and things to do.
The house itself is truly special, rising over 3 floors with lots of character, the outside shutters for the windows made the rooms completely dark which meant we all had the best nights sleep for our entire trip.
The pool was well maintained and clean, it's surrounded by grape vines and olive trees and luscious grass, beautiful mountain scenery all round.
Its only a short drive to the local town of Ponte A Mariano and slightly further to Lucca if you want more hustle and bustle.
We are a foodie group from London and ate out most most nights, so much on offer, and yes . . . the pasta's really were that good!
I'll soon be back and can't wait to stay in this house again, truly perfect holiday.
Thank you so much! I thought you would like the food as there are so many restaurants within a 15 mins drive.
Having a good night sleep is so important, especially for travellers who are jet lagged which is why all the bedrooms have mosquito blinds & shutters. We would love to see you again next year.
We have another sunny week ahead with temperatures touching 30C.
Thanks once again to your family.
Best wishes, Hugh & Hazel
Spectacular Farmhouse set in the heart of Tuscany
Pure bliss! An Oasis of calm situated in the Tuscan hills. Our family had a fantastic stay here in this wonderful farmhouse which felt like a home away from home. Days were spent walking the spectacular Tuscan countryside, relaxing by the pool taking in the breath-taking scenery, trips to Lucca exploring the wonderful walled city (with the children loving the cycle around the walls). Its hard to drag yourself away from such a beautiful house, but we loved our trips to the beach in Viareggio and a day trip to Florence. Next time we will definitely try and take in the Leaning tower of Pisa and a trip to one of the many local vineyards. We couldn’t have had a better stay, thanks v much and we look forward to returning next year!
Frederica, i am glad you loved our house & local area so much especially as I know you have explored Tuscany on several previous holidays.
As a keen foodie i am delighted you appreciate how well equipped our kitchen is.
The 3 terraces work very well for all - sun worshippers, dining and those wanting to paint or read a book quietly on their own.
Thanks, Hugh & Hazel
Beautiful private farmhouse with stunning views
The place is even more picturesque in real life; the photos on the listing don't do it justice. Endless green rolling mountains - it really feels like you've got the entire valley to yourself! The house was impressively equipped with all the mod cons you could need (including Sky TV which went down well with the boys who could watch the footie!) Near enough to Lucca for a quick trip, and far enough away to leave the hustle and bustle well behind. Couldn't recommend more. The Owner, Hugh, was more than accommodating and gave us plenty of food and activity recommendations all of which were great. Already booked next year!
Tommie, thank you so much for you kind review.
We are glad our food suggestions for the local market & butcher were a hit on the BBQ & your dinners were a great success. We're delighted you shared our wonderful valley - it changes with each season and local traditions help maintain it's beauty. We are very lucky to have these panoramic views & lovely friendly local friends & farmers.
Thank you so much for re-booking in 2018.
Best wishes, Hugh
Wonderful escape in the hills of Lucca
We spend one week in April at Casa A Corte as a family holiday (3 couples). Casa A Corte is located in the hills in the North of Lucca.
The house is surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. The pool and the garden are in a very good condition. We enjoyed sitting outside on one of the three (!) terraces every day. You can sunbath the whole day and travel from patio to terrace to terrace... We loved the well equipped kitchen which we used everyday for cooking our family meals. The living room, the dining room and the bedrooms are nicely furnished. We felt at home from the very first minute.
The owner is very helpful. He knows the area very well and provides you with tips for perfect restaurants / ice-cream / wine tasting.
We visited Lucca a couple of times. We drove to Siena as a one-day-trip and we went to the beach at Forte Dei Mami. We can recommend Pietresanta as a nice small town for strolling around and have a look at some art sculptures. But we all liked most when we came back to "our" Casa A Corte in the evening.
We will try to come back to Casa A Corte! We can definitely recommend this house for family gatherings or holidays with friends! Thank you!
Thank you so much for writing a review and we're delighted to not only hear your happy holiday stories but also to learn it was a successful trip. You obviously kept very busy during your stay and we're delighted you had some good trips to other areas.
Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding (& once again for your perfect English).
Have a lovely summer & hope to see you again soon.
29C & full sun this week
Best wishes, Hugh & Hazel
Lucca is a beautiful walled medieval city, which is the birthplace of Puccini. The city is mostly pedestrianised, which is fantastic for cycling and walking. The countryside north of Lucca is breathtaking with many medieval villages perched on wooded hillsides. There are many beautiful palazzos, spas and vineyards to visit in the area. Florence, Pisa and the beaches are all within a short distance.
In the summer there are many musical events: Puccini opera at Torre del lago, whilst in Lucca, during July, several of the worlds best musicians play in the amphitheatre. There are also several jazz festivals.
There are many superb restaurants within 15 mins of the house. Funghi and truffles are some of the local specialities and olive oil from Lucca is one of the best in the world. One hour's drive north from the house is the beautiful ski resort of Abetone. This is a very popular resort with very good facilities
This wonderful location, a wildlife paradise, can be seen using Google Earth
Other Activities: Wildlife / restaurants / markets
Ski: Skiing is an hours journey at Abetone. It is a very nice Italian resort.
