My name is Dennis Sheffield. (2nd from the left between Earnest T. Bass and Barn). I have lived in Nashville since 1991 but am originally from Marianna Florida, a small town in the panhandle about 50 miles north of the Gulf Coast. (Florida State Seminole Country - 1981 Alum) I own a promotional products and T-Shirt business, and am one of the top Traeger Wood Fired Grill Dealers in the South. I know how to sing a good song and can tell funny jokes. I'm single and in search of a wealthy 90 something (female) to marry with a really bad cough.
Dennis Sheffield purchased this cabin in 1997
After living on the North Florida Gulf Coast and observing what made vacation rentals succeed, I spent years looking for a new development in the Tennessee mountains. I wanted undiscovered country since Gatlinburg reminded me too much of Panama City Beach. Sharing space, restaurants and Highways with millions of tourists was not my idea of relaxing. While driving in North East Tennessee one weekend I happened onto the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area after being lost. This was the beautiful secluded river with high bluffs, incredible natural settings (but no tourists) I had dreamed about. Bought the land, created a large pond between the ridges and built a fantastic log home. The legendary singer/song writer, Tom T. Hall, liked it so much he said I could name it after him if he and Dixie could stay and write songs from time to time. Great folks - very generous arrangement.
This is the most relaxing place you could ever imagine. I tell people there's nothing to do but ya don't have enough time to do it all. I usually never leave the cabin for days at a time after hiking, swimming, fishing, love cooking in that incredible well stocked kitchen, grilling and smoking on the Traeger Wood Pellet Grill, reading, and playing music. There is a great Yamaha upright piano that fills the home with harmonics. Sitting in the hot tub gazing at night skies that are like nothing I've ever seen in the south. You can pick out satellites and shooting stars streaming across the heavens. Rocking outside on the covered porches or out on the dock reading while enjoying the north western breezes enjoying the quite solitude makes for the perfect get a way from it all vacation I've ever experienced. It's a hard place to leave once you've unwound. I also wanted to provide a place that families would enjoy for gatherings and vacations. Kids really love the pond and hiking into the Big South Fork Park, horseback trail riding and the train to the old mining camp in Stearns KY are highlights for guests. And of course the Big South Fork River for rafting and white water canoeing is spectacular. There are beautiful hiking trails along the river to Angle Falls and other points that are considered the best trails in the country.
We just got back from an awesome week-long stay at this beautiful cabin. Dennis, the owner, makes sure you have everything one would need for a great stay. He even gave us advise on where to take our car when we thought we were having car trouble. Luckily, it was fixable with just a stop at O'Reilly's. We have stayed at several cabins in the past and this was BY FAR the most well-stocked and definitely the cleanest...and with the most down to earth, personable owner. You can tell that Dennis takes alot of pride in his cabin and he truly wants others to enjoy it. He also sent out the most complete list of things to do and even emailed us a heads up the week before we left to let us know what was going on in the area for the week we would be staying. That was so appreciated and it's little things like that will always make this cabin stand out. The first two days we were there, we just enjoyed lounging around the cabin, sitting on the deck by the pond...fishing and sunning. One day we had the most beautiful rain storm and we sat on the porch on the rocking chairs... listening to the rain and thunder. The porch is wide with a large overhang, so we stayed completely dry while the rain pounded down all around us. That will be a great memory. When we were ready to leave the cabin for the day, we chose to go horseback riding. Luckily, Dennis had Southeast Pack Trips as a suggested activity on his website. Larry, the owner, took us on the most amazing 1/2 day adventure through beautiful trails and forest and creeks in Big South Fork and on his surrounding land. It was the best horseback riding we ever experienced! He customized our trip to be exactly what we wanted to do. We told him we wanted more adventure and he definitely gave us that! The horses were beautiful and well trained. The next day we went on a "River and Rail" all day trip with Sheltowee Trace Outfitters. It was an 8 hr day trip that first took us on the Big South Fork Railway through the old coal mining towns and then canoeing down the river for about 2 hrs. It was very well organized and also included a nice packed lunch in a souvenir lunch bag. We had a wonderful and memorable time at Tom T Hall cabin. Thanks Dennis, for sharing your beautiful spot in the world! We hope to come back for a visit again.
This was beyond expectations and exactly what I wanted. Very private and quiet and in the forest. My work in the fall is non-stop and I need RnR and my dogs need attention. I wanted to have my dogs with me and to hike and we were able to do that out the front door or with a short drive. Relaxing by the fire or in the hot tub was heavenly. The cabin, as advertised, had everything and more that I needed. Owner was exceptionally responsive. I'll be back!
We rented the cabin as a getaway for our family and dogs over Christmas holiday. We had a very relaxing three night stay and were able to reconnect and relax. Dennis had the place decorated for Christmas, including a big Christmas tree. The pictures do not do the place justice, the place is spectacular. It was very clean and nicely laid out and was fully stocked with all the amenities including a crock pot, toaster, coffee makers and plenty of dishes, silverware, glasses and cups, and even a Traeger Grill. If you can’t find something right away, keep looking it is probably there. Plenty of firewood on the porch too and we kept the fireplace going most of the time we were there.
The area had several walking trails and we took advantage of and our dogs were so worn out they had to have several naps and were ready for bed before we were. We also enjoyed some nice soaks in the hot tub and watched beautiful sunsets.
We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this rental to anyone. Thanks again for sharing your lovely cabin with us, we had a fantastic holiday!
This was our 3rd trip to the cabin. We always have the most relaxing time! We were with our friends of 43 years for the second year in a row. This is the most peaceful vacation location! You may hear a squirrel or deer scampering through the woods, but that's about it. Our friend caught the Daddy of all catfish and a couple of large bass. The cabin was very clean and has everything you could possibly need! The Traeger grill is real plus. We have one at home and love it! The hot tub was wonderful and you feel like you could almost touch the stars. Thanks Dennis for another great week at The Tom T. Hall Cabin!! I'm sure we will be back again next year.
This cabin is a renter's dream! The cabin is very clean. There are plenty of towels, trash bags, dishwasher soap, etc. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals, there is firewood stacked on the porch for the indoor fireplace, and firewood stacked outside for the outdoor fire pit. The property is beautiful! Everything you need for an enjoyable get away is provided. Last, but not least, the owner is a pleasure to deal with.
Our week at the Tom T. Hall Cabin made wonderful family memories. Four of our six children and families plus a couple of friends spent the week hiking, tubing/kayaking on the Big South Fork, swimming in the pond and relaxing. It was hot, but the a/c worked great. In the evenings, we retreated to the family area to watch Olympic coverage. One day we smoked a "packers" brisket. Out of a nearly 20# brisket, only about 8 oz. were left for the next day. The smoker is amazing. Thank you, Dennis! The cabin was well stocked and well prepared for our visit. I highly recommend the Tom T. Hall Cabin as a great vacation and get away. Our cell phones did not work, and that was an added benefit! Thank you, Dennis for making this home available. Our week truly was home away from home.
